Will Go Ahead Despite Don King Cease-and-Desist!

(September 9th) Zuffa Boxing is standing firm on Saturday’s scheduled cruiserweight showdown between unbeaten Jai Opetaia and WBC champion Noel Mikaelian, with UFC and Zuffa Boxing boss Dana White confirming that the highly anticipated bout will proceed despite a cease-and-desist demand from veteran promoter Don King. Opetaia and Mikaelian are scheduled to meet September 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as the co-main event of the Zuffa Boxing card headlined by Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn. Zuffa officially lists the bout as a 12-round championship-caliber cruiserweight contest, with Opetaia defending his Zuffa and Ring cruiserweight titles.

The latest development came after Don King Productions sent a legal letter to TKO Group Holdings and Zuffa Boxing demanding that the fight be canceled. DKP claims it has a legally binding promotional agreement with Mikaelian granting the company exclusive worldwide rights to his professional boxing services and alleges that TKO/Zuffa proceeded with the Opetaia fight without DKP's permission or authorization. King's representatives characterize the situation as tortious interference and have demanded that Zuffa immediately cancel the bout.

White, however, has made clear that Zuffa has no intention of pulling the fight. Speaking following Dana White's Contender Series, White confirmed that Mikaelian will be in the ring this weekend and rejected the suggestion that Zuffa attempted to interfere with Mikaelian's contractual relationship with King. “He's fighting this weekend,” White said, adding that he has “always had good dealings with Don” and questioning when Zuffa has ever attempted to interfere with another fighter's contract.

The dispute adds another dramatic layer to what is already one of the most significant cruiserweight fights of the year. Opetaia enters the contest unbeaten at 30-0 with 23 knockouts and is regarded by The Ring as the division's leading fighter. The Australian southpaw captured the inaugural Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight championship in March by dominating Brandon Glanton over 12 rounds, winning by unanimous decision on scores of 119-106 across the board.

Mikaelian, 28-3 with 12 knockouts, is the reigning WBC cruiserweight champion and a two-time holder of that title. He captured the WBC championship in December by defeating Badou Jack via unanimous decision. The Armenian contender was originally expected to pursue a mandatory title defense against David Benavidez, but after more than two months without receiving a bona fide offer for that bout, Mikaelian turned his attention to the opportunity against Opetaia.

The contractual dispute is particularly significant because the Opetaia-Mikaelian fight was developed after negotiations involving Zuffa, TKO and representatives connected to Mikaelian. According to King's legal team, discussions took place with DKP regarding a possible fight or multi-fight arrangement that could have included Opetaia, but no agreement was ultimately reached. DKP alleges that Zuffa subsequently dealt with Mikaelian's manager and attorney and proceeded with the fight despite the promotional agreement King says remains in force.

For Zuffa, the position is unequivocal: Opetaia-Mikaelian remains on the September 12 card. The fight is scheduled to serve as the chief support to Ryan Garcia's welterweight title defense against Conor Benn, with the entire main card streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States and available through DAZN pay-per-view and DAZN Ultimate in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

With the legal challenge now hanging over the event just days before fight night, attention will be focused not only on whether Opetaia and Mikaelian finally settle their rivalry inside the ring, but also on whether Don King's legal challenge produces any further action before the opening bell. For now, according to White and Zuffa Boxing, the message is clear: Jai Opetaia vs. Noel Mikaelian is still on.
