Mike Tyson’s Life, Legacy and Reckoning

Take Center Stage

In Netflix’s Four-Part Documentary Series TYSON!

(September 18th) Netflix is preparing to revisit one of the most extraordinary, controversial and enduring careers in boxing history with TYSON, a four-part documentary series examining the life and legacy of former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. Directed by Floyd Russ, the four-episode, hour-long series premieres globally on Netflix October 13, 2026, bringing together Tyson’s own reflections with interviews involving people close to his life and career. Netflix describes the project as an unflinching examination of the fame, influence, controversy, personal struggles and transformation that have defined one of the most recognizable figures in sports.

The documentary traces Tyson’s journey from a difficult childhood in Brooklyn to his emergence as the youngest world heavyweight champion in boxing history. On November 22, 1986, at just 20 years and 145 days old, Tyson stopped Trevor Berbick to win the WBC heavyweight championship, establishing a record that remains intact. He added the WBA championship by defeating James “Bonecrusher” Smith in March 1987 and completed his collection of the major heavyweight titles by defeating Tony Tucker for the IBF championship in August 1987.

Tyson’s rise was remarkably rapid. Guided by trainer and mentor Cus D’Amato, he developed from a troubled Brooklyn youth into one of the most destructive young heavyweights the sport had ever seen. His explosive knockout power, speed and aggressive style made him a global sports celebrity while his championship reign transformed him into a cultural phenomenon whose identity extended far beyond the boxing ring. Netflix’s original announcement emphasized that the series would look beyond the familiar highlights of Tyson’s career and examine the personal struggles and controversies that accompanied his extraordinary success.

The series also confronts the dramatic collapse of Tyson’s first reign at the top of the sport. His shocking February 1990 knockout loss to James “Buster” Douglas ended his unbeaten championship run and was followed by a period of escalating personal and legal turmoil. In February 1992, Tyson was convicted in Indiana of rape and two counts of criminal deviate conduct. He was sentenced to six years in prison, with the Indiana Supreme Court subsequently documenting the conviction and sentence in its review of his appeal. Tyson ultimately served roughly three years before returning to boxing.

His comeback produced another championship chapter before an incident in the 1997 rematch with Evander Holyfield became one of the most recognizable controversies in sports history. Tyson was disqualified after biting Holyfield's ear during the fight, resulting in the revocation of his boxing license and a $3 million fine. The episode became inseparable from Tyson's public image, illustrating the contrast between his extraordinary achievements inside the ring and the turmoil surrounding his life outside it.

The documentary follows that complicated legacy into the years after Tyson’s championship career. His professional boxing career eventually ended with a 2005 loss to Kevin McBride, but retirement did not remove him from public life. Tyson subsequently reinvented himself through entertainment, publishing, acting, live performances and podcasting, developing a public identity that increasingly incorporated reflection on his past rather than simply the intimidating persona that had defined his championship years.

That evolution is central to the new documentary. In the trailer, Tyson describes himself as having been “addicted to chaos,” while Netflix presents the series as a deeply personal examination of a man looking back at both his achievements and the consequences of his choices. Tyson previously told Netflix that an objective examination of his life requires confronting both the positive and negative aspects of his story rather than portraying himself simply as the hero. The series therefore approaches his legacy through Tyson’s own retrospective perspective as well as the observations of people who have known him.

The project also brings Tyson’s story into the modern era, including his highly publicized 2024 return to the ring against Jake Paul. The November 15, 2024 bout at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, was sanctioned as a heavyweight professional boxing bout and ended with Paul winning a unanimous decision. Netflix reported that approximately 108 million viewers watched the event live worldwide, while the service also reported a peak of 65 million concurrent streams.

Tyson’s return against Paul is particularly significant within the context of the documentary because it demonstrates how his cultural relevance survived decades after his championship peak. Rather than simply looking backward at the fighter who became heavyweight champion at 20, TYSON extends the story into the later stages of his life, examining how one of boxing’s most recognizable figures has dealt with fame, controversy, family, reinvention and the question of what remains after a career built around becoming one of the most feared athletes on the planet.

Floyd Russ directs and serves as an executive producer on the series. His previous documentary work includes Untold: Malice at the Palace, American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing and Zion. Jenna Millman, Jacob Miller and Alexa Ginsburg are credited as producers, while the executive-producing team includes Jim Gray, Ian Orefice, Amanda Spain, Jonna McLaughlin, Greg C. Lake, Michael Hughes, Douglas Banker, Floyd Russ and Bill Simmons. The production companies associated with the project include EverWonder Studio, DLP Media Group and Five All in the Fifth.

The four-part format represents an evolution of the project since Netflix first announced it in December 2024 as a three-part, hour-long documentary series. By the September 2026 trailer and release announcement, the project had been expanded to four episodes. Netflix has not published official individual episode titles or detailed episode-by-episode synopses, so previously circulated titles such as “Brownsville to the Throne,” “The Baddest Man Alive,” “Chaos, Crime, Consequences” and “Legacy & Reckoning” should be treated as reconstructed descriptions rather than official Netflix episode titles.

The new series should also not be confused with the earlier documentary film Tyson. Directed by James Toback, the 2008 film is a separate feature-length documentary built around extensive interviews with Tyson, archival fight footage and photographs. Sony Pictures Classics' original press materials describe Toback's film as a portrait spanning Tyson's Brooklyn childhood, entry into boxing, worldwide fame and the fortunes he won and lost. The 2026 Netflix project is a separate four-part production directed by Russ.

Netflix is also scheduling another Tyson-related production for later this year, Mike Tyson: Return of the Mike, a separate comedy/stand-up special rather than an installment of the documentary series. Netflix lists the production as a stand-up and sports title, further distinguishing it from TYSON.

For boxing fans, TYSON arrives as an examination of a career that encompasses virtually every extreme the sport can produce: teenage prodigy, world champion, undisputed heavyweight king, global celebrity, convicted felon, returning champion, controversial figure and, ultimately, a veteran of the sport attempting to make sense of his own history. By placing Tyson’s achievements alongside the personal and public consequences that followed them, the four-part series promises a portrait that extends well beyond the highlight reel and into the complicated life of the man behind one of boxing’s most famous names.

TYSON premieres October 13, 2026, exclusively on Netflix. The series is rated TV-MA and consists of four approximately hour-long episodes.
