The Greatest: Muhammad Ali’s Extraordinary Journey

From Cassius Clay To Boxing Immortality

Arrives On Prime Video Today!

Eight-Episode Scripted Drama

Explores the Man Behind the Legend, From Olympic Gold

In Rome to Heavyweight Championship Glory Against Sonny Liston

(November 4th) The name Muhammad Ali represents far more than boxing greatness. He was a heavyweight champion, a cultural phenomenon, a humanitarian and one of the most influential sporting personalities the world has ever known. Now, a new eight-episode scripted drama, The Greatest, takes audiences back to the formative years of the man who would become a global icon, exploring the remarkable journey of a young Cassius Clay as he fights his way toward heavyweight supremacy while discovering his identity, challenging expectations and finding his voice in a changing America. Premiering today, November 4, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video, the series makes all eight episodes available simultaneously across more than 240 countries and territories.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Authentic Studios, The Greatest is the first authorized scripted series about Muhammad Ali's life. Executive produced by Ali's widow, Lonnie Ali, the production benefits from access to his estate and promises a more intimate perspective on the champion than the familiar highlights of his extraordinary boxing career. Rather than simply revisiting the knockouts, championship celebrations and unforgettable public appearances, the drama looks beyond the bright lights to examine the family relationships, personal struggles, ambitions and convictions that helped shape one of the most recognizable figures in sporting history.

The story begins following Cassius Clay's gold-medal triumph at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, when the young Louisville boxer returned home with international recognition and dreams of conquering the professional heavyweight division. What followed was an extraordinary four-year transformation, culminating in February 1964, when the 22-year-old Clay defeated reigning heavyweight champion Sonny Liston in one of boxing's most celebrated upsets. Between those historic milestones, viewers are taken inside the personal and professional battles surrounding his rise, including the pressures of newfound fame, complicated family relationships, racial discrimination, political influences and the development of the convictions that would eventually distinguish Muhammad Ali from virtually every other athlete of his generation.

At the center of the production is Jaalen Best, who takes on the formidable challenge of portraying Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali during one of the most consequential periods of the champion's life. Best leads an accomplished ensemble featuring Omari Hardwick as Ali's father, Cassius Clay Sr., Dana Gourrier as his mother, Odessa "Bird" Clay, and Kai Parham as his brother, Rudy Clay. The boxing world surrounding the young contender is brought to life through Amin Joseph as heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, Giovanni Ribisi as legendary trainer Angelo Dundee and Michael Ealy as civil rights leader Malcolm X. Together, the cast recreates the personalities and relationships that helped shape Clay's emergence as a boxing superstar and a powerful voice beyond the ropes.

Created by Ben Watkins, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, The Greatest places the early chapters of Ali's life within the broader social and political landscape of 1960s America. Watkins also directs the opening two episodes, guiding a production that combines the spectacle of championship boxing with the more intimate experiences of a young man negotiating family expectations, racial barriers, religious influences and his growing public identity. Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society is among the production partners, alongside Blue Monday Productions, Roc Nation, Polygram Entertainment and Grace: A Storytelling Company.

One of the most compelling aspects of the series is its decision to concentrate on the journey toward the Liston championship rather than attempting to compress Ali's entire remarkable career into eight episodes. This is the period when a gifted Olympic champion began to understand that his influence could extend well beyond the boxing ring. His developing relationship with Malcolm X, his evolving religious identity and his increasingly outspoken personality all form part of the larger story of a young fighter determined to control his own destiny. The transformation from Cassius Clay into Muhammad Ali was not simply a change of name; it represented the emergence of a man whose beliefs, personality and willingness to challenge convention would eventually make him an international symbol of courage and conviction.

With Lonnie Ali serving as executive producer, The Greatest also carries a particularly meaningful connection to the man whose story it tells. Her involvement and the production's access to the Ali estate distinguish the project as an authorized dramatization, although audiences should understand that a scripted historical drama is not a documentary and may use dramatic interpretation to bring private moments and historical events to the screen.

For boxing fans, the appeal is obvious: the return to an era when a young, lightning-fast heavyweight with extraordinary confidence and an unmistakable personality began changing the sport forever. But the series also reaches beyond the boxing audience, exploring the making of a cultural icon whose impact ultimately transcended championship belts and fight-night glory.

Muhammad Ali spent a lifetime telling the world he was the greatest. The Greatest takes viewers back to the beginning, when that extraordinary legacy was still taking shape, and asks them to look beyond the champion to the young man who had to discover just how great he could become.

The Greatest premieres November 4, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video. All eight episodes are available to stream together.
