By: Alfred Zimmerman
April 25th, The Nest, Notts County FC, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom: In the cruiserweight headline bout of a Harry Ashton - Trilogy Promotions and Carl Greaves Big City Boxing 02 co-promotion, Boston, Lincolnshire, former British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion and IBF World Title challenger Callum “The One” Johnson to the ring with a six round points loss to Belfast, Northern Ireland, based Nigerian, Austine Nnamdi.
From the outset, Johnson’s return leaving his two bout heavyweight stint in the rearview mirror carried the usual questions: timing, sharpness and whether his trademark power could translate effectively into the cruiserweight division the contest proved far more competitive than pre-fight expectations suggested.
The 40-year-old former British and Commonwealth and IBF world title challenger, Johnson had moments where his heavier shots and ring experience were evident, but Nnamdi quickly established himself as a live underdog, applying consistent pressure, working at a higher tempo, and landing the cleaner, more frequent scoring shots over sustained stretches.
Nnamdi’s activity, cleaner shot selection, and willingness to engage in close exchanges allowed him to edge multiple rounds on work rate and volume as Johnson’s intensity began to dip during the later stages.
The decisive moment arrived in the sixth and final round when Nnamdi landed a clean right hand that sent Johnson to the canvas. Johnson beat the count and finished the round, but the knockdown ultimately proved pivotal with referee Kevin Parker scoring it 58-55 for the Nigerian. The career-defining upset moves Nnamdi to 14-6, 11Ko’s as the comeback road for Johnson buckles at 23–2, 15Ko’s. The Viddal Riley, Rolly Lambert Fogoum, Austin Aokuso, Andrey Stotsky, Floyd Masson and Pat Brown tested, 36-year-old, Nnamdi breaths a bit of life at 14-6, 11Ko’s. Not “The One” tonight, Johnson’s comeback side tracked, slips to 23-2, 15Ko’s.
