Padley Survives Fierce Challenge From Fiaz

To Retain European Crown In Razor Thin Split Decision!

By: Joe Martin

June 6th, Sheffield Arena, Yorkshire, Sheffield, United Kingdom: In the main event of an Eddie Hearn -Matchroom Boxing show streamed live on DAZN, Armthorpe, Yorkshire’s, Josh “Paddy” Padley retained his EBU European Super Featherweight title with a twelve round over Oldham, Lancashire’s, Aqib “Ambush” Fiaz.

The fiercely contested, high-level domestic showdown between two hungry contenders determined to establish themselves among the division's elite saw Fiaz begin looking to impose his pressure-fighting style utilizing effective body punching and persistent forward momentum, the challenger appeared to edge several of the opening rounds with his ability to work inside and target Padley's midsection disrupted the champion's rhythm and forced him into uncomfortable exchanges along the ropes.

Padley, however, demonstrating the patience and fortitude of a reigning champion began making crucial adjustments in the middle rounds increasingly relied on his superior timing, sharper counter-punching, and cleaner shot selection landing the more eye-catching and effective scoring blows against the volume punching challenger.

The physical nature of the closely contested rounds intensified in the championship rounds with Fiaz continuing to press the action repeatedly draw the attention of referee Kevin Parker for fouls, including multiple warnings for low blows leading to the defining moment in round eleven when Parker penalized Fiaz with a one-point deduction for headbutting.

Leaving nothing in the corner, both fighters emptied their reserves in the twelfth and final round. As the more accurate punching Padley delivering one of his strongest rounds of the evening, showcasing the championship composure finished strong grabbing a razor-thin, title retaining 114-113 Fiaz, 115-112, 114-113 Padley split decision win. Padley three victories from a   February 2025 ninth round TKO loss to Shakur Stevenson improves to 19-1, 6Ko’s. Fiaz, 1-2 since an October 2023 eighth round retirement loss to Reece Bellotti slips to 14-2, 2Ko’s.

In the co-feature, unbeaten Birmingham prospect, Ibraheem “Spider” Sulaimaan claimed the BBBofC English Super Featherweight title with a conclusive ten round unanimous decision win over Keighley, Yorkshire, Ibrahim “Ibby” Nadim.

From the opening bell, Sulaimaan established control through superior footwork and sharp counter-punching. Rather than allowing Nadim to dictate the pace with pressure, Sulaimaan repeatedly created angles and capitalized on openings with crisp combinations. His ability to strike accurately while avoiding prolonged exchanges prevented Nadim from building any momentum forcing the legendary former three-division world champion Marco Antonio Barrera cornered champion to continually reset his attacks.

As the rounds progressed, so did Sulaimaan's confidence expertly controlling the spacing and tempo, neutralizing Nadim's pressure attack with quick well-timed counter combinations. The young champion's ring IQ and defensive expertise was particularly impressive. Although Nadim threw more punches down the stretch, unable to land enough clean shots to change the securely built direction of the fight “Spider” rather than chasing a knockout remained patient methodically, steadily compiled a conclusive 98-92, 100-90, 100-90 unanimous decision victory.

The victory showcased why Sulaimaan is considered one of Britain's top young prospects. His speed was a major advantage throughout the contest, but his composure was equally impressive. Instead of searching for a knockout, he stuck to his game plan, boxed smartly, won rounds consistently, and built a comfortable lead on the scorecards. The newly crowned champion, Sulaimaan stays unbeaten at 11-0, 5Ko’s as Nadim’s seven bout victory run comes to a close at 16-2-1, 2Ko’s.
