Olympic Welterweight Champion Dies At 73!
(March 18th) The amateur boxing world is mourning the loss of Jochen Bachfeld, the East German fighter who captured the welterweight gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Bachfeld passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 73.
Jochen Bachfeld was born December 17, 1952, in Sülte, East Germany. He initially practiced judo before turning to boxing in the early 1960s, eventually joining the renowned SC Traktor Schwerin program—one of the German Democratic Republic’s premier amateur boxing clubs. Under the GDR’s structured amateur system, Bachfeld developed into a technically skilled southpaw and became a fixture of the national team throughout the 1970s.
Bachfeld competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, finishing ninth in the featherweight division.
His greatest achievement came four years later at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he captured the welterweight (–67 kg) gold medal with a perfect tournament run. Along the way he defeated:
In the final, Bachfeld edged Pedro Gamarro of Venezuela by a 3–2 decision to secure Olympic gold. The victory placed him among the elite Olympic champions produced by East Germany during one of the nation’s strongest eras in amateur boxing.
Over the course of his amateur career, Bachfeld compiled more than 100 victories, with approximately 109 wins in 119 bouts reported in official records. He also won multiple domestic titles in the GDR and earned international recognition through strong performances in European and world-level amateur competition.
Persistent injuries forced Bachfeld to retire from competitive boxing around 1979–1980. As with most athletes in the GDR system, he never turned professional. After leaving the ring, he remained connected to the sport and his community in Schwerin, where he was respected as a mentor and figure within the region’s boxing circles.
Jochen Bachfeld died on March 14, 2026, aged 73. While reports confirmed his passing, detailed medical information regarding the cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Remembered for his disciplined style and technical precision, Bachfeld’s 1976 Olympic triumph remains one of the defining achievements in East German amateur boxing history, securing his place among the sport’s notable Olympic champions.
