Ghanaian Boxer Ernest Akushey

Passes Days After 2nd TKO Loss!

(September 24th) Ghanaian boxer, Ernest Akushey, widely known by his ring name "Bahubali," tragically passed away on September 23, 2025, at the age of 32, just 11 days after his last fight held at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

 

Akushey coming off a May 10th, 2025 seventh round technical knockout loss to unbeaten fellow countryman, Jonathan Tetteh was stopped in the eighth round by Jacob Dickson in super middleweight main event of a Edward Coleman "Monaco Night of Proofcard, September 12th, 2025. Following the fight, "Bahubali" was rushed to LEKMA Hospital in Teshie, where he was later diagnosed with malaria and other health complications before his untimely death.

 

Akushey, was born in the fishing community of Chorkor and trained at the prominent Wadada Gym in James Town, a well-known hub for boxing talent in Ghana. Throughout his professional career starting in 2019, he had a promising record with eight professional fights, winning six of them, mostly competing in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Known for his relentless and aggressive fighting style, his ring nickname "Bahubali" was inspired by the heroic warrior from a popular Indian film, reflecting his toughness and endurance in the ring.

 

His death has sent shockwaves through Ghana's boxing community, reigniting concerns about the safety standards in the sport. Boxing veteran Joshua Clottey had warned Akushey after the bout about the dangers of absorbing too much punishment, cautioning that the consequences might not be immediate but would manifest over time. Akushey's sudden passing highlights ongoing debates about fighter protection and medical care in boxing, especially in local circuits where resources may be limited.

 

As fans and fellow fighters mourn the loss of a beloved athlete whose potential was cut short. Akushey’s story raises urgent questions about the health risks faced by boxers and the importance of vigilance regarding their well-being both before and after fights. His legacy as a courageous fighter from the heart of Ghana’s boxing scene remains firmly respected and mourned across the country.

 

Reports have Akushey's family in grieving along with his promoter, Edward Coleman has requested a thorough post-mortem examination and burial and funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
