2001: Hall of Fame Trainer Eddie Futch Passes!
Futch was born August 9, 1911 in Hillsboro, Mississippi, moved with his family to Detroit, Michiganat age five. Living in the Black Bottom section of the town Futch training at the same gym as Joe Louis, (the Brewster Recreation Center Gym) won the Detroit Athletic Association Lightweight Championship in 1932, and adding a Detroit Golden Gloves Championship in 1993.
This while playing semi-professional basketball with the Moreland YMCA Flashes only to have his plan to attend the YMCA College School at the University of Chicago squashed by the Great Depression. A heart murmur prevented Futch from turning pro working at the Wolverine Hotel to support his family began training boxers.
An outstanding trainer Futch prepared fighters to perform at the highest levels for several decades. Champions. Notable fighters who trained under Futch's tutelage include his first world champion Don Jordan, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Michael Spinks, Alexis Arguello, Marlon Starling, Wayne McCullough, Montell Griffin and Ken Norton who recalls in his autobiography that Futch's master plan for his first Ali fight was for Norton to try and out-jab Ali. Futch believing it would play mind games with Ali, who was so proud of his own jab just fell short breaking Ali’s jaw losing a controversial split decision March 31st, 1973. World class trainer Freddie Roach was trained and mentored by Futch.
