Arturo Gatti Was Not Properly Weighed Before Joey Gamache Fight, Rules Judge! (click here)

A judge ruled that the New York State Athletic Commission mishandled Arturo Gatti's weigh-in before his 2000 fight against Joey Gamache at Madison Square Garden, but rejected Gamache's damages claim for his career-ending knockout loss.

Judge Melvin Schweitzer ruled the commission failed to properly verify Gatti met the 141-pound limit, as an official removed him from the scale prematurely, but evidence didn't prove Gatti was "substantially" heavier. HBO unofficially weighed Gatti at 160 pounds and Gamache at 145 pounds before the bout, where Gatti knocked out Gamache in the second round, leading to brain damage claims. The commission welcomed the decision, noting improved modern weigh-in procedures with electronic scales.
