Wilfred "El Radar" Benitez beat Antonio "Kid Pambele" Cervantes for the WBA World Junior Welterweight championship. With this victory, he became the youngest fighter to win a world title at the age of 17 years and 5 months old.

1983: Previously unbeaten Irish super welterweight Billy Collins Jr. who had his career was cut short after sustaining serious injuries against Luis Resto against who was found to have used illegal, tampered gloves and plaster-of-paris hands wraps. Originally, Resto won a unanimous decision. The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) ordered the result changed to "No Contest" following charges that Resto's gloves had been illegally tampered with before the bout by Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis. As a result of this bout, in October 1986, Resto was convicted of assault, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a deadly weapon (his fists). He served 21/2 years of a three-year sentence. Both he and Lewis were banned from boxing for life.
