On This Day In Boxing History!

1943: "The Raging Bull" Jake LaMotta

vs

"Sugar" Ray Robinson II!

The 1943 fight where Jake LaMotta defeated Ray Robinson by a ten round unanimous decision was their second encounter.

Their first bout occurred on October 2, 1942, at Madison Square Garden, where Robinson won a one-sided decision. The February 5, 1943, rematch took place at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan, with LaMotta (160lbs) leveraging a 16-pound weight edge over Robinson (144lbs) to rally late and secure scores of 52-47, 55-45, 57-49. Robinson's first loss after 40 wins

some speculated on Robinson's pending Army draft or distracted prep amid World War II.

This victory marked Robinson's first career loss after 40 straight wins. They fought four more times through 1951, with Robinson prevailing in the next four (including the infamous sixth "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" for LaMotta's middleweight title). Overall, Robinson led the rivalry 5-1.
