George Foreman's
1968 Olympic Gold Medal
To Go To The Highest Bidder!
(November 29th) Seventy-six-year-old, “Big” George Foreman's Heavyweight Gold Medal from the 1968 Mexico City Olympics is under the hammer with Lelands Auction handling the sale of one of sports memorabilia's most coveted prizes online since November 16, 2025 at 12:00 PM EST.
The 19-year-old, Foreman captured the gold by stopping Soviet boxer Ionas Čepulis in the second round of the final bout. In a moment that defined his early career, Foreman waved a small American flag around the ring immediately following his victory—a patriotic gesture that came just days after Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised black-gloved fists in their famous Black Power salute on the 200-meter podium, making Foreman's action a subject of intense scrutiny and celebration.
The medal's journey to auction is as remarkable as the victory it commemorates. Decades after Foreman retired from boxing and became an ordained minister in the 1970s, the gold medal was discovered in a neighbor's garage where the champion had stored boxes years earlier and forgotten about them.
Expected to fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars, the medal represents one of the rarest items in sports collecting—an Olympic gold from a major boxing champion. Foreman plans to dedicate all proceeds to his Youth and Community Center in Houston, Texas, which provides educational and athletic opportunities for local children.
