Historic Doubleheader
Stevenson vs. Zepeda and Berlanga vs.Sheeraz
Set For July 12th At Louis Armstrong Stadium!
(May 15th) Ring Magazine proudly announces a landmark night for boxing as two world-class main events come to the iconic Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, Queens, on Saturday, July 12th. This open-air, 14,000-seat venue-best known for the US Open-will host its first-ever boxing event, delivering a summer spectacle under the stars.
Headlining the doubleheader, Houston, Texas based WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, 23-0, 11Ko’s will defend his crown against San Mateo Atenco, Mexico’s hard-charging William "Camaron" Zepeda, 33-0, 27Ko’s in a battle of unbeaten southpaws. Stevenson, a three-division world champion and Olympic silver medalist, enters his third title defense after a dominant TKO win in February. Zepeda, the interim WBC titleholder, brings relentless volume and power, making this a classic clash of styles: Stevenson’s defensive mastery against Zepeda’s offensive onslaught.
In the co-main event, Brooklyn’s own Edgar "The ChosenOne" Berlanga, 23-1, 18Ko’s faces Illford, Essex, England’s undefeated Hamzah Sheeraz, 21-0-1, 17Ko’s in a high-stakes super middleweight showdown. Berlanga, rebounding from his only career loss to Canelo Alvarez with a first-round knockout in March, looks to reclaim his momentum against Sheeraz, who steps up in weight after a controversial draw with WBC middleweight champion Carlos Adames earlier this year. Both fighters are ranked among the division’s elite, promising fireworks in a pivotal title eliminator.
The "Ring Magazine 3" event will be broadcast live on DAZN and serves as the launch for The Ring’s new TV series "Inside the Ring." The unique setting and stacked card signal a new era for boxing in New York City, with fans set to experience world championship action in one of the city’s most storied venues.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Friday, May 16th, at 10 a.m. ET via Ticketmaster.
Louis Armstrong Stadium is a premier sports venue located at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens, New York City. Owned by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), it serves as the second-largest stadium at the US Open, with a seating capacity of 14,053. The stadium features a modern design by Rossetti Architects and opened in 2018, replacing the original 1978 structure. One of its standout features is a retractable roof-the largest among secondary Grand Slam stadiums-combined with natural ventilation, allowing for uninterrupted play during inclement weather. The court surface is Laykold hardcourt, consistent with other courts used at the US Open. Named in honor of legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong, who lived nearby, the stadium carries a rich cultural legacy alongside its sporting significance. It is easily accessible via public transportation, including the Long Island Rail Road and New York City Subway. Louis Armstrong Stadium continues to be a central venue for world-class tennis events and is recognized as an architectural and technological marvel in the heart of New York City’s sporting landscape.
About Ring Magazine:
Ring Magazine, the “Bible of Boxing,” has chronicled the sport’s greatest moments since 1922. This event marks another milestone in its commitment to delivering the best matchups and most memorable nights in boxing.
In November 2024, Oscar De La Hoya sold The Ring magazine to Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority and a prominent figure in the global boxing scene. This sale marked the end of De La Hoya’s 17-year ownership, during which the magazine was operated under Golden Boy Enterprises and maintained its reputation as "The Bible of Boxing" despite ongoing debates about editorial independence. Under Alalshikh’s leadership, The Ring is expected to undergo significant changes, including a revival of its monthly print edition and a separation of digital and print editorial teams, with Rick Reeno overseeing digital operations and Dougie Fischer continuing as editor-in-chief of the print magazine. The acquisition reflects Alalshikh’s broader efforts to expand Saudi Arabia’s influence in international boxing through high-profile events and media investments.
Don’t miss this historic night-where champions are made and legacies are forged.
