Yafai and Chocolatito Clash In Texas!

(January 16th) Brit defends WBA Super-Flyweight strap against four-weight World ruler Kal Yafai will defend his WBA World Super-Flyweight title against Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez on Saturday February 29 at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, LIVE on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

TICKETS ARE ON SALE FROM 10AM (CST) TODAY STARTING AT $25 VIA SEATGEEK

Yafai (26-0 15 KOs) makes the sixth defense of his WBA strap and returns to the States having gone the distance with dangerous Dominican Republic challenger Norbelto Jimenez in his last defense in Providence, Rhode Island in June.

The Birmingham star and Britain’s longest reigning World champion has been gunning for a major fight and has certainly landed that in the shape of Chocolatito (48-2 40 KOs) the former four-weight World ruler and pound for pound king who returned to action in December with victory in Japan. The Nicaraguan is gunning for a return to his World champion status and both fighters are thrilled to be clashing on a huge night in the Lone Star state.

“I wanted the biggest possible fight available and after the Juan Francisco Estrada unification fell through, I had the opportunity to fight Chocolatito, the former pound for pound king!” said Yafai.

“Chocolatito is someone that I have idolized as I worked my way up to become World champion myself, so it doesn’t get much bigger than this and it will bring out the best in me. I can’t wait, it is a case of when idols become rivals and I am so honored to share the ring with him but also show the world that I am an elite World champion.”

“First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Eddie Hearn for giving me this opportunity to fight for the World championship,” said Chocolatito. “God has responded to my prayers once again. I want to thank God and Teiken foremost. Also, the Champion, Kal Yafai for giving me the opportunity to fight for the championship once again. I know this will be a very hard fight, but it will be worthy of all our efforts and determination.”

“This is a brilliant fight on an absolute monster of a show!” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Kal Yafai has been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time and now he gets it against a legend of the sport in Chocolatito. This card in Texas is going to be epic and you can expect Yafai v Chocolatito to be an all-out war!”

Yafai and Chocolatito is part of a massive night of action in Frisco, topped by the Welterweight showdown between Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas, with all-action Mexican Julio Cesar Martinez making the first defense of his WBC World Flyweight title against unbeaten Welsh challenger Jay Harris – and more stellar action to be added to the card.

Tickets for Mikey Garcia / Jesse Vargas

Feb 29th Texas Welterweight Clash On Sale Today!

(January 10th) Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas met face-to-face in at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas ahead of their Welterweight showdown at the venue on Saturday February 29th.

Garcia (39-1 30 KOs) returns to the Lone Star state following his clash with Welterweight World champion Errol Spence at AT&T Stadium in March, and the former four-weight World ruler broke off preparations in California to face Vargas at the venue for his tenth fight in Texas in his career.

“It’s a first for me fighting someone that I know,” said Garcia. “We’ve done fundraisers together, commentated together and hung out, but that’s different. I don’t need to push him to sell the fight, it’s a great match-up and Jessie is a multi-division World champion like me, so the fans know what they are going to see.

“It’s a great fight for everybody. February 29, once we’re inside the ring there’s no more friends. I need to beat him to prove that I am capable of being a major player in the Welterweight division, if he beats me then he’s a huge name at 147lbs - so there is a lot at stake here. There’s a lot of questions for me and I think that this is a great fight for me to give the right answers.”

Vargas (29-2-2 11 KOs) is gunning for a return to World title action following a fine stoppage win over Humberto Soto in California in April, and the 30 year old former two-weight World champion believes his showdown with Garcia will be a fan-friendly affair.

“Being at the Ford Center has really got the juices flowing for the fight,” said Vargas. “It’s a great facility and I think that we’re going to pack the place out and we’ll put on a great fight that can blow the roof off. It’s going to be a fan-friendly fight and one that is not to be missed, the fans know what is coming, an all-action fight.

“I want the fight to live up to the hype, fans have been hitting me up in the past to say that this would be a great fight and here we are - so now we go back to camp to make sure we’re in the best shape to give the fans what they want.”

Garcia and Vargas top the bill in Texas with all-action Mexican Julio Cesar Martinez making the first defense of his WBC World Flyweight title against unbeaten Welsh challenger Jay Harris – with more stellar action to be added to the card.

Martinez Defends World Crown Against Harris In Texas!

(January 3rd) Julio Cesar Martinez will make the first defense of his WBC World Flyweight title against Jay Harris at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas on Saturday February 29, LIVE on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Martinez (15-1 12 KOs) landed the title in stunning fashion before Christmas, becoming the first man to stop former champion Cristofer Rosales in an all-out war in Phoenix, Arizona. The 24 year old Mexican talent is wasting no time in getting his first defense in the books, and the all-action Mexican is sure to be a big hit with the fans on a night headlined by the Welterweight clash between Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas.

Harris (17-0 9 KOs) will have other ideas though and the unbeaten Welshman has the bit between his teeth following a big win of his own in his last outing. The 29 year old travelled to Belfast in October and knocked out three-time Olympian Paddy Barnes inside four rounds to underline his readiness for the big stage, having already captured European and Commonwealth titles.

“I’m so happy to be back fighting so soon, especially on such a huge show in Frisco,” said Martinez. “It was a special moment become World Champion but now I must continue to work hard and defend my title with honor for my people of Mexico”

“I want to say a big thanks to Matchroom and MTK global for giving me the opportunity to fight for the WBC title in Frisco on such a big event,” said Harris. “Julio is a great young fighter but I am feeling in the form of my life and this gives me the opportunity to shock the world.”

“It’s perfect to have Julio back fighting so quickly, it all part of developing him as a fighter,” said Eddy Reynoso, Sport and Talent director at Canelo Promotions. “He has so much potential and I believe he is going to dominate and unify the division in time. First we must overcome this challenge on Feb 29 in Frisco”

“Julio is just brilliant to watch and the fans in Frisco are in for a real treat as this new Mexican star makes the first defense of his World title,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Jay Harris has impressed lately, looking great last time out knocking out Paddy Barnes and capturing the Commonwealth and European titles. The styles should gel perfectly here for a real fan friendly war on what promises to be a huge night of boxing.”

An announcement on ticket on sale dates and further additions to the undercard of Garcia vs. Vargas will be made early next week.

Mikey Garcia vs Jesse Vargas Clash In Texas

American-Mexican Stars Clash

In Welterweight Blockbuster on February 29th!

(December 18th) Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas will clash in a Welterweight blockbuster at Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas on Saturday February 29th.

Former four-weight king Garcia (39-1 30 KOs) makes his debut on DAZN with new promoter Eddie Hearn in the same state of his last outing at AT&T Stadium in Arlington in March in a bid to win World honors at a fifth weight.

Garcia, who turned 32 on Sunday, has now planted his flag in the ground at 147lbs by taking on Vargas, and the popular Californian will aim to make a big statement as he fights in Texas for the tenth time in an already glittering career.

“I’m very happy to announce my next fight against Jessie on February 29 in Texas, live on DAZN,” said Garcia. “I believe our styles are going to make for a great battle and the fans are going to be in for a real treat. Tune in and don’t miss it”

Former two-weight ruler Vargas (29-2-2 11 KOs) has already tasted glory at Welterweight and is gunning for more glory starting with his clash against Garcia.

Vargas was the first fighter to headline a Matchroom Boxing USA show in America in his entertaining draw with Thomas Dulorme in Chicago in October 2018 and followed that with a clinical KO win over Humberto Soto in Mexico in April. The 30 year old, who held the WBO strap at 147lbs in 2016 after moving up from Super-Lightweight where he held the WBA crown, believes that the timing is perfect for him to come out on top of what he promises will be a fan-friendly showdown.

“It’s a big fight for fight fans, it’s one people have wanted for a long time now,” said Vargas.  “We are giving them what they want to see, it’s going to be a great showdown.

“He’s a warrior and so am I, we both always go for the win and do anything possible to get it. I really believe in myself and my abilities, it’s one of the fights that will generate a lot of attention and it’s the perfect time to shine and show that I am here to stay – I need to show that I am going to be a World champion again and this is the perfect fight to show that.”

The huge showdown marks a return to Texas for Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA after staging on of the fights of the year in the unification sizzler between Maurice Hooker and Jose Ramirez in July, and the promoter is thrilled to be pitting Garcia and Vargas together in what promises to be an all-out war.

“Garcia vs. Vargas is a great fight and I’m so excited to bring this show to Frisco, Texas live on DAZN on February 29,” said Hearn. “The DAZN schedule is simply breathtaking and the value they are delivering to fight fans in quite incredible.

“This fight has all the makings of a Barrera v Morales type war where the styles should gel brilliantly for a real classic. I want to thank Jerry Jones and his team for his support for this great event, get ready for a huge fight and huge card at Ford Center in February!”

“It gives us great pride to host another superior boxing match of this caliber with Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas,” said Dallas Cowboys Owner, President and General Manager Jerry Jones. “Showcasing two of the best Welterweight boxing superstars, our fans and the entire North Texas region will get to experience another incredible event here at Ford Center.”

“We are excited to have the February 29 showdown between Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas serve as the official start to another Fight Season on DAZN in 2020,” said Joseph Markowski, DAZN EVP, North America. “Both men are multi-division champions who have proven their ability to draw an audience as incredible ambassadors for the sport. We anticipate a tremendous promotion with Mikey and Jessie before they meet in Texas.”
