EWBSS Ali-Holyfield Preview:

Holyfield Believes He Would Win Ali Trophy In His Era!

(March 23rd) Evander Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs) faces Muhammad Ali (56-5, 37 KOs) on Monday, March 23 at 5pm (GMT) in the first of the quarter-finals of the ‘eWBSS Heavyweight Legends’ tournament simulated on EA Sports ‘Fight Night Champion’.

Being from different eras Ali and Holyfield obviously never met inside the ropes in real life – although Ali’s last fight and Holyfield’s first are only three years apart  – but multiple times outside the square ring on various occasions.

Holyfield reigned as the undisputed champion in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, being the first and – to date – only boxer in history to do so. The incredible achievement righteously earned the American the ‘Real Deal’ nickname.

If there was a heavyweight edition of the World Boxing Super Series is his era, Holyfield firmly believes that he would be the likely winner of the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

“I was heavyweight champion of the world four times from 1990-2000, so it kind of speaks for itself. I fought everybody,” Holyfield has told the WBSS.

Holyfield fought the best to become the best, the likes of George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis. Just like the participants of the WBSS will need to fight the best in order to become the king of their division.

“I think the concept of the World Boxing Super Series is great, the fact is that people need to see the best. The tournament speeds it up and gives people the opportunity to bring themselves together and see the very best fighters.

“And by winning this tournament you get Ali appreciation meaning you are the best. There is supposed to be one champion.”

Muhammad Ali died at age 74 on June 3rd, 2016, and Holyfield was one of the guests on ‘Good Morning America’ on ABC a few days later to talk about his relationship with ‘The Greatest’.

“When I was eight years old, I was told that I could be like Ali and that’s how things started with my boxing relationship,” he told. “He’s a man that had confidence. He’d speak and he was able to back up everything that he spoke about and which gave me the courage to move up and try to be a champion like he was.”

On September 28, 2018, Evander Holyfield was one of the honorary guests at the WBSS Super Middleweight final between George Groves and Callum Smith, and it was aptly the two-weight champ who carried the Muhammad Ali Trophy towards the ring before the encounter at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The ‘eWBSS Heavyweight Legends’ tournament begins on Monday, March 23, and there will be a live-streamed fight every night until the final on Sunday, March 29. The entire ‘eWBSS Heavyweight Legends’ tournament will be live-streamed on the World Boxing Super Series Facebook page at 5pm (GMT) every day.

The tournament is created to provide some much-needed relief and entertainment for fight fans around the world during these testing times.
