WBF Title Fights in USA and France on February 24th

(Tiberi / Brewer)

(February 20th) Two World Boxing Federation (WBF) title fights will take place on Friday February 24, as Mike Tiberi faces Toris Brewer for the vacant North American Super Middleweight title in Dover, Delaware, USA, and Thierry Karl and Sandro Siproshvili clash for the vacant International Cruiserweight crown in Saint Quentin, France.

Going for his first professional title, “Mighty” Mike Tiberi, a 23-year-old bright prospect from nearby Wilmington, has racked up an impressive 18-1 (7) record since entering the paid ranks in June 2007. His sole defeat came in his seventh bout to fellow undefeated prospect Dwayne
Shelton, dropping a four round decision. Since then he has moved up a weight-class, and hasn’t come close to losing again.

His opponent, 38-yeal-old Toris “The Bull” Brewer, 14-4 (6), could turn out to be the biggest test so far for Tiberi. While the South Carolina-resident is coming off two losses, he has never been stopped and has mixed with better opposition than his younger foe. A real “Prospect vs. Veteran” encounter, the Tiberi vs. Brewer WBF North American Super Middleweight title fight goes ahead at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, as is the co-feature alongside a Super Featherweight battle between top-contender Juan Carlos Burgos and former world champion Cristobal Cruz.

On the same night in France, at the Palais des Sports in Saint Quentin, former two-time French national champion Thierry Karl will take a crack at his first Cruiserweight belt, the WBF International, when he steps in the ring with Georgian tough-guy Sandro Siproshvili.

Karl, 29-5 (19), holds some excellent wins in lower weight classes, such as stoppages over undefeated opponents Dejan Ribac (16-0) and WBO world title-challenger Nadjib Mohammedi (19-0), but it remains to be seen if he can carry his punching power up to cruiserweight.

In his last fight, this past November, Karl (27) stopped Serbian journeyman Mile Nikolic in the first round, but a seasoned campaigner such as Siproshvili will be a whole 'nother kettle of fish.

Based in Prague, Czech Republic, Siproshvili, 25-10 (12), has fought some of the best Cruiserweights in Europe. Only stopped in his professional debut, the 29-year old Georgian has gone the distance with former World Champions Herbie Hide and Ola Afolabi, as well as several top-class contenders.

While Karl must be considered the favorite, Siproshvili will definitely be a true test for him at Cruiserweight, and if the Frenchman is not on top of his game he will surely have a hard time winning the fight. On the other hand, if he manages to win inside the distance, and do what Hide and Afolabi couldn’t do, it will be a great measure of what kind of success he
may achieve at the new weight.

The Thierry Karl vs. Sandro Siprosvili WBF International Cruiserweight title fight is scheduled for ten rounds, and is presented by Sport Evenements Promotion. Also on the card will be a European Union Super Featherweight title fight between Guillaume Frenois and Hovhannes Zhamkochyan.

Cagri Ermis New WBF Middleweight World Champ

(February 13th) Germany’s Cagri Ermis reached the, at least so far, highlight of his up-and-down career on Saturday night when he captured the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Middleweight title by defeating Portuguese Vitor Sa at the Braamkamp 1 arena in Hamburg.

With clever boxing from the outside, Ermis controlled the fight with sharp and well-timed punches from the get-go, and rarely allowed Sa to get close enough to do any damage. The local man fought a very disciplined fight, and while game veteran Sa never stopped trying he was outboxed and outmaneuvered by his younger foe.

Ermis was originally to challenge former Champion Karama Nyilawila for the title last December, but first the bout was postponed when the German got injured, and later the title was declared vacant when Nyilawila, overdue a defense, decided not to honor his contract and instead take a non-title bout, so Ermis did well to adjust to his new co-challenger.

After twelve interesting rounds, all three judges had Ermis a clear winner by scores of 120-109 (Artur Ellensohn), 120-108 (Zbigniew Lagosz) and 117-111 (Timo Habighorst). Referee was Frank Michael Maass.

The new world champion improved his professional record to a deceivingly modest 13-10-2 (4), while Vitor Sa dropped to 26-7 (5). The fight headlined a massive show promoted by EC Boxpromotion.

WBF Champions Sanchez and Kuehne Retain In Mexico & Germany

(Sanchez / Kuehne)

(January 16th) Thousands of miles apart, but equally impressive, Irma Sanchez and Ramona Kuehne retained their WBF Women’s Flyweight and Super Featherweight World titles on Saturday night by stopping their opponents in front of packed crowds in Mexico and Germany.

At the Coliseo Olimpico de la UG in her hometown of Guadalajara, Irma “La Guerita” Sanchez, got rid of Thailand’s Fahpratan Looksaikongdin already in the second round. After dominating the first stanza, Sanchez found a perfect right in the second that send the challenger crashing to the canvas, and referee Juan Manuel Rincon wisely stopped the fight at 1:27 of the round.

Televised by Mexico Televisa and promoted by HG Boxing, this was the second successful defense for Sanchez of the World Flyweight title she won last July, and judging by the loud reception she received from the spectators Saturday night she is clearly a superstar in Guadalajara, and another title defense in the beautiful capital of Jalisco state would likely be welcomed by the local boxing fans.

With the victory Sanchez improved her professional record to 22-5-1 (7), while Looksaikongdin, who in her last bout came close to stopping WBF World Jr Flyweight Champion Ju Hee Kim before losing on points in South Korea, fell to   7-4.

WBF President Howard Goldberg was present to supervise the bout, but also to present an honorary belt to the family of former WBF World title-challenger Rafael “Chocho” Guzman, who was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Guadalajara last October.

A few hours earlier, at the Baden Arena in Offenburg, Germany, Super Featherweight Champion Ramona Kuehne improved her impressive record to 19-1 (6) by dominating Hungarian challenger Renata Domsodi (7-1, 3 KOs) for seven rounds before ending matters at 1:24 of the eighth.

At the time of the stoppage she was ahead by 70-63 on all scorecards. Kuehne never let Domsodi in the fight, and every time the Hungarian attempted something she was firmly put in her place by hard and precise shots from the champion. The longer the fight went, the longer the
combinations from Kuehne were, and she really showed off all her boxing skills in a master-class performance.

In round eight Domsodi suffered a cut over her left eye from an accidental clash of heads, but was allowed to continue after inspection from referee Ingo Barrabas. However, it was only a matter of time, as Domsodi, confused by the dripping of blood, was quickly overwhelmed by Kuehne who went in throwing until Barrabas rightly interfered and waved it off.

This was the third defense of the WBF title for Kuehne, who also retainedher WBO and WIBF championships in the process.

The WBF In 2011Growing And Growing Fast

(January 2nd) After already having a tremendous 2010, again the only way was up for the World Boxing Federation in 2011, easily surpassing the previous years numbers and setting a new record in terms of championship fights.

This is especially remarkable in view of the WBF policy to keep the number of different titles to a minimum as opposed to some 'colorful' titles created by other sanctioning bodies.

In 2011, the WBF sanctioned a total of 40 championship bouts, which amounts to a 15% growth rate from the previous year.

These 40 fights for WBF titles took place in 15 different countries, namely Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea and the USA.

With these statistics, the World Boxing Federation now is firmly on the fast track to establish itself as the most serious contender to challenge the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO.

“We bring sanity back into boxing by not bringing in ridiculous and meaningless titles which no fan really wants or having regional titles with ineligible fighters competing for it, simply to earn a sanction fee,” explains WBF President Howard Goldberg of South Africa, further saying “Plus, we try to eliminate officials who only serve the benefits of promoters. We want honest, honorable officials with integrity and that is exactly what we have at this time."

The highly qualified staff of the World Boxing Federation grew during 2011 parallel to the growth of the championship activity and noteworthy additions in the past year included Alan Santana of California (North American Coordinator), Torben Seemann Hansen of Denmark (Executive Committee Chairman), Gianluca Di Caro of England (Marketing Director), as well as David Walshe of Ireland (Irish Republic Representative) and Dan Hernandez of New Mexico (North American Media Coordinator).

Also, 2011 saw the WBF embracing facebook and twitter as well as launching its own merchandise clothing line. More is in store for 2012 with the next WBF World Convention firmly in the pipeline, the Gaelic/Celtic championships designed to give an impetus for boxer worldwide from these heritages, and further countries lining up to start promoting WBF championships.

“We know it is a long road ahead of us, but we are ready for the journey, well equipped and will never stop improving. I promise 2012 will be even more of a success for the WBF,” says Goldberg.

Yvan Mendy Still WBF Champion

(December 17th) In front of a noisy crowd at the Salle Marcel Cerdan in Thourotte, France, World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Light Welterweight Champion Yvan Mendy retained his title on Friday night with a fourth round stoppage over challenger Tarik Madni from Belgium.

In a clash of two stylish competitors, Madni started best and won the first round by being more active, but in the second Mendy picked up the pace and clinched the next two stanzas with excellent boxing. It was shaping up to be a very interesting bout between well-matched fighters, but in the fourth round things took a dramatic turn.

Out of the blue, after getting hit on his right elbow, Tarik Madni dropped to the floor holding his arm with a look of terror on his face, clearly in massive pain. Referee Paul Thomas from England had no choice but to start his count, and it was evident that Madni was not getting up before he reached ten, resulting in a knockout victory for Mendy.

This was the second successful defense for Mendy, who improved his record to 23-2-1 (12). Madni lost for the third time as a professional and is now 15-3 (0). The Belgian was immediately examined by the ringside doctor who diagnosed what was likely a torn ligament in the elbow, a serious injury that requires surgery.

After three completed rounds, judges Jean Marcel Nartz from Germany and Christope Hembert from France had it 29-28 in favor of Mendy, while Jean-Pierre Van Imschoot from Belgium had it 30-27. Time of stoppage was 1:05 of the fourth round.

After the fight Mendy expressed his desire to next challenge WBF World Champion Ali Funeka from South Africa, and based on the very good performance against Madni he seems to be ready for such a challenge.

The styles of Mendy and Funeka would make for another interesting fight that would hopefully have a more satisfactory result one way or the other than Mendy vs. Madni.

Mansour, Delgado & Hendrix Lifts WBF Titles

(December 3rd) Amir “Hardcore” Mansour won the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Heavyweight title on Friday night, December 2, at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware as he scored a sixth round stoppage over former world title-challenger Epifanio Mendoza from Columbia.

Rapidly building a reputation as one of the most spectacular heavyweights around, Mansour came out in his usual all-guns-blazing fashion in the first round, while Mendoza boxed defensively and tried to counterpunch when Mansour missed.

This pattern continued in the second, and Mansour quickly established that he was the stronger of the two as Mendoza was forced to use his legs more than his fists. Mansour hurt, and almost knocked down, Mendoza in rounds three and five, and at this point it looked as if the end was near.

Mansour was getting stronger as the fight progressed, while Mendoza was clearly tiring. The end came at 1:17 of the sixth, when Mendoza was caught in a corner taking several punches without being able to offer anything in return and his trainer threw in the towel to rescue his boxer.

With the victory Mansour improved his professional record to 16-0 (12), and continues his quest for a world title shot in the future. Mendoza dropped to 32-13-1 (28).

On the same night in Atlanta, Georgia, two new WBF North American Champions were crowned as Paul Delgado captured the vacant Super Welterweight title and Tyrese Hendrix took home the Welterweight strap on a show promoted by Sports Fan Properties, Shea Bailey Promotions and Delgado Boxing Promotions.

At the Georgia World Congress Center´s Thomas Murphy Ballroom, Delgado proved too classy for veteran Ruben Galvan and scored a shutout unanimous decision by scores of 100-89, 100-90 and 100-90. The former world-title-challenger is now 26-11-1 (4), and Galvan goes to 27-20-4 (10).

In a more competitive and closer contest, at least on the scorecards, Tyrese Hendrix was awarded a majority decision over tough campaigner Chris Gray. Judge Robert Ezor had them even at 95-95, but was overruled by Edward Kanner and Irwin Deutsch who had Hendrix ahead by 97-93 and 98-92 respectively.

As the new WBF North American champion Hendrix took his professional ledger to 21-3-1 (9), and Gray is now 13-17-1 (1).

WBF Announce Gaelic/Celtic Title

(December 1st) The World Boxing Federation has announced the creation of a regional European title which will pique the interest of boxers, and fans worldwide, as the new WBF Gaelic/Celtic Championships will be open to any boxer from a Gaelic or Celtic nation or heritage.

Of course, the six original Celtic nations are Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man, however Gaelic people also have roots in parts of Spain, Portugal, France and Nova Scotia. In any case, regardless of citizenship, Gaelic and Celtic parentage is the mark of eligibility for these titles, which are about to start by January 1, 2012.

Credit for the creation of these championships goes to new WBF Irish Republic Representative David Walshe, who reasons:

“The criteria to qualify for an Irish title restricts many non-Irish-based boxers the opportunity to fight for what is seen in their eyes as a very important title because of their Irish lineage. The WBF Gaelic Celtic Championships, however, includes hundreds of boxers all over the world and gives them a chance to box for an Irish-connected title.”

WBF European Coordinator Olaf Schroeder, backed with the support of WBF President Howard Goldberg and WBF Vice President Jean Marcel Nartz, is happy for the World Boxing Federation to fill this gap and be the leading sanctioning organization in this area.

“David (Walshe) and myself believe that our Gaelic/Celtic titles will soon become a serious challenger to the Commonwealth belts, because the quality of boxers eligible is of a much higher standard,” Schroeder said, “and thus provide a direct path to a shot at the WBF world title.”
