Andrade Destroys Hernandez

(February 11th) - Star Boxing's Demetrius "The Matador" Andrade turned in an electrifying performance, destroying former world title challenger Angel "Toro" Hernandez in two rounds, in tonight's ESPN Friday Night Fights main event on an entertaining card, presented by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Andrade improved his record to a perfect 16-0 (11 KOs) and captured his first title belt, the IBA Americas junior middleweight title. The 2008 U.S. Olympian is presently rated among the top 15 in all four governing bodies: WBO #9, IBF #12, WBC #14 and WBA #15.

The 23-year-old from Providence went to Hernandez' (30-11, 17 KOs) body in the opening round and then opened-up in the second, dropping Angel once and then again for good at 1:39 as referee Steve Smoger waved off the count and declared the outcome a knockout.

"I felt good," Andrade commented after the fight. "I was in great shape. I saw he was breathing heavy after the first round and decided to take the fight to him in the second. I knew I had him, especially after the straight left. This is my first belt and I'm going to collect a lot more. A few more fights, little more experience, and I'll be ready for anybody in the world."

Andrade is co-promoted by Star Boxing and Banner Promotions.

In the co-feature, unbeaten Philadelphia junior welterweight Raymond "Tito" Serrano (18-0, 8 KOs), rated No. 15 by the WBA, bounced back from a third-round knockdown to take a unanimous 10-round decision from Kenny Abril (11-2-4, 6 KOs).

"It was a good fight," Serrano said. "I felt like I was winning the (third) round, but I slipped as he hit me (knockdown) with a jab. I wasn't hurt. He's a strong fighter. We went a good 10 rounds. It was a good experience and I'm 18-0."

Bronx super featherweight Emanuel Gonzalez (10-0, 7 KOs) kept his perfect record intact by way of a fourth-round unanimous decision versus Jesus Bayron.

Former USBA & NABO champion "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis (23-7-2, 10 KOs) registered a workmanlike victory by six-round decision against veteran junior welterweight Shaka Moore.

East Hartford's popular super featherweight Joseph "Chip" Perez (7-1, 2 KOs) out-gunned a game Jamell Tyson for a hard-fought six-round decision. Local favorite Jair Ramos (2-0, 2 KOs) stopped junior welterweight Miguel Rodriguez (0-2) in the second round. Super middleweight Charles Foster (2-0, 1 KO) a knockdown to defeat Borngood Washington in a spirited bout.

DeGuardia Family Had Split Loyalties Watching Super Bowl

(February 8, 2012) - Veteran boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia had a brief respite this past Sunday, one day after promoting his second show in two weeks and a few days prior to his Star Boxing-presented ESPN Friday Night Fights show this week, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

A lifelong New York sports fan, Joe eagerly watched the Super Bowl with his two sons, Joseph (15) and Andrew (10), in the Bronx at a relative's home. Joe and Joseph were thrilled that their New York Giants won, but Andrew was heartbroken his New England Patriots lost.

For some unknown reason, Andrew is a Pats fan who showed the heart of a fighter last Friday, when he entered his classroom in Westchester -- filled with Giants fans -- wearing a Tom Brady jersey and Patriots hat along with #12 (Brady's number) painted on one side of his face, Patriots on the other.

"He didn't care," Joe said about his son being the lone dissenter among his classmates. "I was torn watching the game because one son was rooting for the Giants, the other for the Patriots. I was born and raised in the Bronx, a diehard New York sports fan. Joseph is the same as his parents (Giants, Yankees, etc.). Andrew, though, is a rebel.

"Andrew was ecstatic when the Patriots were leading. He was rubbing it in, even doing a 'Cruz salsa dance' after the Pats scored a touchdown. A little depressed after the game, Andrew bounced right back saying, 'Wait until next year.' Believe it or not, I honestly don't know why, but Andrew is a Red Sox fan, too."

Friday night's fights this week should be easier for Joe to watch because both of his sons will be supporting two of Star Boxing's most promising boxers, unbeaten 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade, and undefeated junior welterweight prospect Raymond "Tito" Serrano.

Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs) takes on former world title challenger Angel "Toro" Hernandez (30-10 (17 KOs) in the 10-round main event for the vacant North American Boxing Organization ("NABO") junior middleweight title. Former World amateur champion Andrade - WBO #9, WBC & IBF #13 and WBA #15 - fights out of nearby Providence.

In the 10-round co-feature, WBA #15 Serrano (17-0, 8 KOs), fighting out of Philly, meets former New York State title-holder Kenny Abril (11-4-1, 6 KOs), of Rochester (NY).

A strong undercard features past and future champions and contenders, as well as some of the most promising prospects on the East Coast.

Former USBA & NABO light welterweight champion "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis (22-7-2, 10 KOs) returns against always popular Shaka Moore (11-16-3, 2 KOs), of Norwalk (CT), in a six-round, crossroads fight.

Another undefeated Stat Boxing fighter, Bronx super featherweight prospect Emanuel Gonzalez (9-0, 7 KOs) puts his perfect record on the line against upset-minded Jesus Bayron (5-3-1, 4 KOs) in a six-round match. East Hartford super featherweight Joseph "Chip" Perez (6-1, 2 KOs) faces Jamell Tyson (2-4-1, 1 KO) in another six rounder.

Also fighting on the undercard in separate four-round bouts is a pair of promising Connecticut boxers. Waterbury junior welterweight Jair Ramos (1-0) fights Miguel Rodriguez (0-1), while New Haven super middleweight Charles Foster (1-0) faces Queens veteran Borngood Washington.

Angel Hernandez Replaces Ill Derek Ennis vs. Demetrius Andrade
in Friday's ESPN Main Event at Mohegan Sun

(February 8, 2012) - Star Boxing president Joe DeGuardia has announced that former world title challenger Angel "Toro" Hernandez (30-10, 17 KOs) has replaced an ill Derek Ennis for Friday's night's main event against 2008US Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs) on ESPN Friday Night Fights at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The headliner is a 10-round battle for the vacant North American Boxing Organization ("NABO") junior middleweight title. Ennis was forced to withdraw due to the flu.

"We're very fortunate to find a solid veteran like Angel Hernandez as a late replacement," DeGuardia said. "He's been in with some of the best and beaten the likes of Juan Carlos Candelo, Frankie Randall, James McGirt, Larry Marks, and Antwun Echols. We expect him to be a solid test for Demetrius."

Hernandez, fighting out of Chicago, is a typically tough Mexican fighter who has been stopped only twice in 40 professional fights. In 2004, he lost a 12-round decision to Winky Wright in their IBF light middleweight title fight. A former NABF, IBA Americas and NABA champion, Angel lost a disputed 12-round split decision to former world champion Kassim Ouma for the vacant USBA championship.

to Union Center Saturday April 28th

(February 5th) Sports fans in Albany, New York turned out in droves on Saturday night as Star Boxing presented "KO AT THE TU" at the Times Union Center.

"We're very pleased with the supportive crowd who saw some great fights and truly had an entertaining evening. Our next date here in Albany at the Times Union Center will be on Saturday, April 28th," said Joe DeGuardia, President of Star Boxing.

In front of a loud and supportive crowd approaching 4,000 strong, heavyweight contender Joe "The Future " Hanks defended his IBA Americas Title over monstrous Cuban Rafael Pedro.

The 28-year-old Hanks took the fight right at the 6'7" Pedro, pressuring the giant with piston like jabs and crunching body shots, easily winning the opening stanza.

The assault continued in the second round when the proceedings ended abruptly. With Pedro attempting to fend off Hanks, he fell to the canvas after attempting a right hook. Suffering from an apparent dislocated right shoulder, Pedro informed the referee he was unable to continue and the bout was stopped at the 0:48 mark of the round.

With the win, Hanks of Newark, New Jersey improved his perfect record to 19-0 with thirteen stoppages while Pedro fell to 21-10-1 (15KO's).

Fighting off the early aggression from Harvey, Rooney was very busy banging away at Harvey, hurting him various times over the four round scrap with hard shots from both hands, icing the victory with a brutal right hand that sent Harvey's mouthpiece into the air in the fourth frame.

Winning by shutout scores of 40-36 on all three score cards, Rooney improved to 3-1-0 (1KO), while Harvey returned to California at 1-2 (1KO).

Highly regarded middleweight prospect Jason Escalera stayed unbeaten with a fourth round stoppage of Marcus Brooks in their crowd pleasing, scheduled eight rounder.

Dropping Brooks in the second with a crunching body shot, Escalera followed up with an additional knockdown of the stalking Columbia, South Carolina native in the third round.

The gutsy and aggressive Brooks stayed after the skilled Escalera but was dropped again in the fourth with a shot to the body, the bout being called to a halt at the 1:09 mark of the round.

Fighting out of Union City, New Jersey, Escalera improved to 13-0-0 with 12 knockouts while Brooks moved to 7-9-0 (3 KO's).

In front of a large, loud and proud gathering of supporters, Schenectady's Bryan 'The Brick" Abraham upset Darnell Jiles of Rochester, New York in their junior welterweight bout scheduled for six.

Displaying superior technique, Jiles controlled the early action with his advantage in speed and blistering counter shots. But the game Abraham kept after the southpaw with hard right hooks.

Trading heavily much to the crowds delight towards the end of the round, Abraham drilled Jiles to the canvas with three brutal right hooks, the bout being stopped at the time of 2:59.

Demetrius Andrade Following the Plan!

(January 23rd) - Undefeated 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade believes his February 10 main-event fight against former USBA junior middleweight champion Derek "Pooh" Ennis, for the vacant North American Boxing Organization ("NABO") junior middleweight title, is a continuation of a well designed plan, eventually landing him a world title fight later this year or in early 2013.

With world title belt implications for the winner, Andrade-Ennis headlines the Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing show on ESPN Friday Night Fights at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs), fighting out of nearby Providence, was a much decorated amateur who in 2007 became the first American since 1999 to capture a gold medal at the World Amateur Championships. The talented 23-year-old from Providence is ranked in the top 15 of all four major governing bodies: No. 9 by the World Boxing Organization ("WBO"), No. 13 by the International Boxing Federation ("IBF") and World Boxing Council ("WBC") and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association ("WBA"). He is co-promoted by Star Boxing and Banner Promotions.

"This fight will put me in a good position and let people know that I'm coming hard," Andrade said. "I will be there soon (world champion) but I'm in no rush. I've been handled the right way. We're following the game plan and picking the right fights. Once I get up to 20-0 or so, I'll be ready to call out the big guys like (Canelo) Alvarez.

"I've improved a lot since I turned pro, mentally and physically. I've kept my head on straight, remained focused and have had no distractions at all - in or out of the ring. Physically, I'm in tip-top shape, able to handle whatever comes my way."

IBF No. 9-rated Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs) is carrying on the rich tradition of other tough Philadelphia fighters before him such as Joey Giardello, Jeff Chandler, Bernie Briscoe and so many others from the City of Brotherly Love.

"I don't know too much about Ennis other than his record and that he has a good style," Demetrius remarked. "We're looking to step-up and fight guys like him. We're going to make this show rock. I'm going for a big win."

Like Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Roy Jones, Jr. before him, Andrade is a exceptionally gifted boxer who has been unfairly tabbed a "safety-first fighter" because he makes fights look so easy and effortless. Boxing, though, is about hitting your opponent without getting hit. Andrade has done just that and much more during his perfect pro career to this point. The slick southpaw has been thoroughly dominant in his 15 pro fights, knocking out 10 opponents, and winning all but four of 59 rounds on the judges' scorecards.

"Sometimes, it's funny to me that, when I win by a decision, some people get mad because I didn't knockout my opponent," Andrade explained. "But they still get mad when I win by knockout. Whenever I fight, I bring a different look and nobody can say I don't. I beat (Grady) Brewer with my jab and I went to (Saul) Duran's body with power punches until he quit.

"Each and every fight, I'm better, stronger - stepping-up against better competition - and I'm still winning."

Derek Ennis Says Using 2008 US Olympian Demetrius Andrade as Springboard NABO Junior Middleweight Title Fight Feb. 10th on ESPN FNF Live from Mohegan Sun

(January 17th) - Philadelphia junior middleweight Derek "Pooh" Ennis plans to use unbeaten 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade as a springboard February 10 in their main event fight for the vacant North American Boxing Organization ("NABO") title.

Andrade-Ennis headlines the Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing show on ESPN Friday Night Fights show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The 10-round bout has future world title belt implications for the winner.

Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs), fighting out of nearby Providence, in addition to being an Olympians also was the 2007 World Amateur Championships gold-medal winner, the first American to do so since 1999. Fighting Feb. 10 on ESPN for the ninth time in his three-year professional career, the 23-year-old Andrade has been so dominating he has won 55 of 59 rounds on the judges' scorecards

Andrade is rapidly climbing the ratings ladder, currently ranked in the top 15 of all four major governing bodies: No. 9 by the World Boxing Organization ("WBO"), No. 13 by the International Boxing Federation ("IBF") and World Boxing Council ("WBC") and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association ("WBA"). He is co-promoted by Star Boxing and Banner Promotions.

The confident 5' 8" Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs), a former USBA title-holder who is rated No. 9 by the IBF, believes a victory against Andrade will put him right back into the junior middleweight picture. "I'm just looking at this as another fight," Ennis said. "But, as soon as I beat him, I'm right back on top. I really don't know too much about him other than he's tall (6' 1") and a southpaw.

"Coming from Philly, I have a good name or persona, so everybody knows I'm coming to fight. People are going to see a lot of speed and pressure put on by me in a world-class fight."

Ennis' most significant victory to date was against another relatively tall Olympian, 6' 1" world title challenger Ermosele Albert (22-3-1), of Nigeria, by way of a12-round decisions in 2009 for the vacant USBA championship.

"This fight is a great opportunity for us," Ennis' co-manager Moe Gonzalez (E & M Management) noted. "We know he's in tough against this kid, but Derek is tough, too. They better not think they have a cakewalk, Derek is coming to fight. He doesn't have problems with southpaws or taller guys. Derek really gets up for fights like this and he'll be ready."

US Olympian Demetrius Andrade Headlines
February 10th ESPN FNF Show vs Derek Ennis
for NABO Jr Middleweight Title at Mohegan Sun

(January 5th) -- Star Boxing will once again showcase one of the most promising boxers in the world, undefeated 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade, February 10 against rugged Philadelphian Derek "Pooh" Ennis in a 10-round bout for the vacant North American Boxing Organization ("NABO") junior middleweight title, headlining an ESPN Friday Night Fights show at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

"We're excited to be going back to beautiful Mohegan Sun for another ESPN Friday Night Fights show with Demetrius Andrade, one of the top young boxers in the world, headlining what will be a very entertaining and competitive card," Star Boxing president Joe DeGuardia said. "This is going to be a breakout year for Demetrius, who will be fighting close to his family, friends and fans in Providence. Ennis is a tough Philadelphia fighter who figures to give Demetrius the toughest test of his young pro career."

"We love fight night at Mohegan Sun Arena and it's a perfect fit when there is an exciting card like this one in our building," added Thomas L. Cantone, Mohegan Sun, Vice President Sports and Entertainment.

One of the most gifted all-around boxers, Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs) has been favorably compared to a younger, heavier Floyd Mayweather, Jr. because of their similar styles, featuring lightning-quick feet and hands, superior defensive acumen and dominant victories. In Demetrius' five fights that have gone the distance, for example, he has won 30 of 34 rounds on the scorecards.

The 23-year-old Andrade, fighting only a short drive from his Providence home, was a 2007 World amateur champion who will be fighting for the seventh time on ESPN. In his last two fights, the slick southpaw pitched a near shutout in August en route to a 10-round unanimous decision against veteran Grady Brewer, winner of The Contender II television reality series, and stopped former world title challenger Saul Duran after three rounds last September in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Andrade is rapidly climbing the ratings ladder, ranked in the top 15 of all four major governing bodies: No. 9 by the World Boxing Organization ("WBO"), No. 11 by the International Boxing Federation ("IBF"), No. 13 by the World Boxing Council ("WBC") and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association ("WBA").

The Cape Verdean descent star-in-the-making faces his stiffest test to date as a professional in Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs), a former USBA title-holder who is rated No. 9 by the IBF. Ennis' most notable wins were by 12-round decisions in 2009 against world title challenger Ermosele Albert (22-3-1) for the vacant USBA belt and a year later versus Gabriel Rosada (14-4) in a USBA title defense.

Andrade is co-promoted by Star Boxing and Banner Promotions.

The winner of the Andrade-Ennis fight will better position himself for a world title shot against WBO titlist Zaurbek Baysangurov (26-1, 20 KOs), of Russia.

Another Upset on Azteca America, Alcine Defeats Lemieux

(December 12th) Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing in association with GYM INC. presented the 5th installment of "BOXEO AMERICA" broadcast live this past Saturday December 10th, from the Bell Center in Montreal Canada on the Azteca America network and once again a major upset took place in the main event as former WBA Jr. Middleweight champion Joachim Alcine (33-2-1 19KO) won a spirited 12 round majority decision over hometown hero David Lemieux (25-2 24KO) capturing the WBC Intercontinental Middleweight championship.

Lemieux started out strong rocking Alcine in the first round and continued being the aggressor for the next couple of rounds. Alcine started to fight his way back into the fight in the fourth round using a strong jab, good counterpunches, and slick movement. Alcine rocked Lemieux in the fifth round with a big right hand but David kept applying the pressure as the bout wore into the championship rounds. It was mostly a give and take affair but in the end Alcine prevailed and scored the big upset by majority scores of 116-112 on two cards, and 114-114 on the third.

The semi-final saw a dominate performance by Adonis Stevenson (16-1 13KO) as he battered Aaron Pryor Jr. (16-5 11KO) stopping him at 0:43 of the 9th round in a 12 round Super Middle bout that was contested for the NABA and NABO titles as well as the IBF International title. Stevenson started out fast and strong as he dropped Pryor in the first round, one of four knockdowns he would score. Pryor's corner had seen enough after the fourth knockdown in the 9th round and mercifully threw the towel in. It was Stevenson's most impressive performance to date.

Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing is quickly turning Azteca America into the network of upsets as each of the five installments have seen major upsets and undefeated fighters fall by the wayside. It was a great way to close the year on Azteca as Star Boxing has provided exciting, diversified, and competitive fights. Next years action should be even better.

Rodriguez Dominates Wolak!

(December 5th) Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing's prize Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-2 14KO Danbury, CT) scored the most impressive win of his career Saturday night at the sold out Madison Square Garden as he pitched a near shutout over highly rated Pawel Wolak (29-2-1 19KO Mt. Arlington, NJ) over the 10 round distance. The unanimous scores read 98-92, 98-91, and 100-90 by the 3 judges at ringside.

The rematch of their first epic encounter on July 15 of this year was vastly different as Rodriguez used a razor like jab and sharp combinations from the opening bell to stymie Wolak's attack. Wolak tried his best in his ever pressing style but one could see early that this was going to be Rodriguez' night.

Both fighters were willing early but by the 4th round Rodriguez started to take over using all the punches in his arsenal to go along with deft foot movement as he started to pile up the points. As the bell sounded for the 10th and final round, both fighters received a well desevered ovation from the crowd and Rodriguez immediately went to work stunning Wolak with several combinations. As the round wore on Rodriguez went for the knockout, much to the crowds delight, as he continually unleashed devestating punches to Wolak's body and head. To his credit, Wolak hung in gamely to the final bell and the crowd roared its approval as the fight ended.

It was clearly Delvin' most significant win to date. Star Boxing's founder and CEO Joe DeGuardia had this to say about his fighter, " Delvin fought like a champion tonight. He rose to the occasion like true champions do. Further he showed in round 10 that from here on, Delvin is prepared to go for it all. After a long and hard road for Delvin, I believe Delvin has turned the corner and showed he has what it takes to be on the big stage and reach his goals". Star Boxing congratulates Delvin, his manager AJ Galante and trainer Fernely Feliz.

The Rodriguez-Wolak bout was part of the Pay-Per-View telecast of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight held Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in NYC, NY.

The 27 year old Algieri undefeated I his previous eleven improving in every outing would do the same using a “Sugar” Shane Mosley peppering jab to set up straight right hands and a vicious body attack that just fl short of stopping Jargal in the third.

Jargal would have his moments in the middle rounds but the cagey Algieri would mix some laying on the ropes and counter punching with some good movement and angles keeping the pressing Jargal off balance.

Remaining calm and patient like a full fledged veteran the “Pride of Huntington” traded with the tough “Mongolian” most times beginning and ending the exchanges.

Jargal attempted to turn it up in rounds nine and ten but the persistent Algieri would stand for none of it taking advantage of the previous eight rounds of solid body work out slugging the veteran slugger 98-92, 97-93 times two when the judges scores were announced.
