Cohen Congratulates Greene for Successful Ring Return

The quick victory was Greene's second since his comeback began in October. He took more than a year off after suffering his only profession loss in June 2010, via decision against Vanes Martirosyan.
"Joe looked sharp again tonight," said Cohen. "He wanted to get in a few rounds and keep himself at the top of his game and that's what he did."
Cohen says the 25-year-old southpaw is all the way back and will now be in search of a big fight.
"By the way he looked in there tonight, it's obvious Joe is ready for the top contenders and champions in the super middleweight division. He was using tonight as a yard stick and by the look of his opponent, he's all set to face anyone. Joe Greene is ready to take on the world again.

Cohen: Rahman Fighting Povetkin Next, Nobody Else

(December 26th) Responding to news of a supposed showdown between WBA Champion Alexander Povetkin and WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck scheduled for February 25, Greg Cohen, promoter of former unified heavyweight champion and current WBA #1 contender and mandatory challenger Hasim Rahman, wishes to remind representatives of Povetkin and Huck (and anyone else who claims to be fighting Povetkin next), that Hasim Rahman will be Povetkin's next opponent.
"Rahman is Povetkin's mandatory. Povetkin already had an optional defense against Cedric Boswell." explained Cohen. "I have the letter from the WBA. Povetkin has until February 27 to fight against Rahman. The only way they could fight Marco Huck is if we stepped aside and we're NOT stepping aside."
The letter, from Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, Executive Vice President of the World Boxing Association, clearly states that "...According to rule 13 title matches are limited to a sixty-day period expiration date starting from December 27, 2011 in which the World Champion or official contender are forbid (sic) to participate in a different bout. The first 30 days would be considered as the free negotiation period."
Cohen says he doesn't know who is behind the stories and releases being put out to the contrary, but there is no doubt about what will happen on Team Rahman's end. "There have been several erroneous reports about Hasim fighting someone else or of someone else fighting Alexander Povetkin. We wish to state for the record that Hasim Rahman fully intends to enforce his mandatory status and face Alexander Povetkin early next year.
The letter from the WBA is below:
October7,2011
Mr. Alexander Povetkin,
WBA Heavyweight Champion
Dear Champion:
Please take notice, that pursuant to championship rule 12 you must defend the title against the official contender one hundred and eighty days (180) from the date you became the champion.
Since you won the championship on August 27, 2011 the next obligatory championship bout will be due on February 27, 2012, and shall box against the highest available contender Hasim Rahman.
Also we must notify that according to rule 13 title matches are limited to a sixty-day period expiration date starting from December 27, 2011 in which the World Champion or official contender are forbid to participate in a different bout. The first 30 days would be considered as the free negotiation period.
If no agreement is reached within the time indicated a purse bid will be called.
Yours truly,
Gilberto Jesus Mendoza
Executive Vice-President

Bright Future Ahead for Boxing's Newest Star
WBA Jr Middleweight ChampionAustin Trout
Heading for High-Profile Showdowns
(November 15th)The future is looking extremely bright for WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Austin "No Doubt" Trout (24-0, 14 KO's) after the virtuoso performance he turned in against Australian challenger Frank LoPorto on Friday night at Cohen Stadium in El Paso, Texas.
Making the second defense of his title and his national television debut, Trout was masterful in logging a dominant TKO victory at 2:32 of the sixth round. Showing off his elite-level power, speed, timing, and fluid movement, Trout was barely touched while delivering a savage beating to his #14-ranked opponent.
It was the type of showing that gets the boxing world's attention.
"I couldn't be more proud," said his elated promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions. "Austin was sensational. He set out to make a statement and he made it emphatically. He is now regarded as an elite-level fighter in a very talent-deep division."
Cohen says that Trout now has two options for his next fight and both are lucrative, important fights.
"Miguel Cotto is the super champion of the WBA Junior Middleweight division. He won his title in June 2010 against Yuri Foreman. When you're the super champion of the WBA, the rules state you need to defend against your mandatory every 18 months, so the winner of the upcoming fight between Cotto and Antonio Margarito must make their mandatory title defense against Austin Trout. We want to make that fight against either guy as soon as possible."
If, however, the winner of the December 3 rematch between Cotto and Margarito declines to face Trout in his first defense, the other option would be a defense against Australia's colorful Anthony "The Man" Mundine.
"If they choose not to fight us and vacate the belt, then we'll be the only ones with a rightful claim to be WBA champion. In that case, we'll make our mandatory against Mundine in a fight that would have not only all the new fans Austin made over the weekend, but the entire continent of Australia also buzzing the day it was made. Either way, it's a win for my fighter. He's finally going to get the kind of fight he's dreamed of getting and all the recognition that will also come when he wins. He went from something of a secret in boxing to one of the hottest fighters in the sport with that one terrific performance."
After that, Cohen says the Austin Trout hit list will have some recognizable names on it. "After Cotto or Mundine, it's on to (WBC Light Middleweight Champion) Canelo Alvarez, James Kirkland, Alfredo Angulo; we're going to clean out the 154-lb division before we're done. The future is very, very bright for Austin Trout."

Promoter Cohen OK After Crash Landing in Poland

(November 2nd) Promoter Greg Cohen, of Greg Cohen Promotions, is safe after being aboard the Boeing 767 from New Jersey that had to make an emergency landing at Warsaw, Poland's Frederic Chopin International airport today.
On his way to his fighter, James Toney's fight against Russia's Dennis Ledbedev this Friday, Cohen was among the 230 people on board who survived unscathed after trouble with landing gear forced the plane to land on its belly.
Live television covered the entire landing, as sparks flew when the plane hit the runway, which was already covered with flame retardant foam. The LOT airlines jet had previously circled and dumped most of its fuel before the perfect emergency procedure.
"That was crazy," laughed the virtually unflappable Cohen afterward.
Cohen, who made a living in the private jet industry previously, is now a, thankfully, living commercial for his own former industry.
He will continue on to Moscow, Russia, for Toney's Friday showdown with WBA #1 cruiserweight contender Denis Ledbedev at the Khodynka Ice Palace.

Joe Greene Returns with Impressive Knockout

(October 2nd) Junior middleweight contender "Mean" Joe Greene (23-1, 15 KOs) returned to action on Saturday by scoring a TKO 6 over durable veteran William "Pete" Johnson.
Fighting at the Grand Ballroom at Fitzgerald's Hotel & Casino in Tunica, Mississippi, Greene showed no rust from his time off, throwing over 100 punches per round and finally getting the TKO at 2:16.
It was the perfect tune-up for Greene who was making his first appearance since suffering his first loss in June 2010, a unanimous decision against Vanes Martirosyan.
"Joe looked sensational tonight and showed no ring rust whatsoever. He was in terrific shape and looked as sharp as ever against a tough guy who was determined to make the final bell," said Greene's promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions. "We couldn't be happier with his performance. Clearly, he's got his focus back and is once again an extremely dangerous threat to any other junior middleweight in the world."
Cohen says the 25-year-old southpaw will head back to the gym immediately to continue training.
"Joe is hungry again and you just can't keep him out of the gym. He's ready to show the world what he's truly made of. We'll sit down with him and his people and decide if another tune-up fight is needed or if we'll just start talking to some of the other top contenders and champions in the division about getting in the ring with him. 2012 is going to be a great year for Joe, but not so much for his opponents."
