October 1st, Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City New Jersey: With big fights with the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather looming in his future Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez successfully defended his WBC Diamond Middleweight Title stopping European Champion “Dazzling” Darren Barker in eleven.

In what started looking like a good sparring session “Maravilla” used his right jab while Barker stuck out his own. Martinez began using some good ring movement then reach Barker to the body with his left. Barker not “dazzled” or “dazzling” did enough, staying steady in the middle rounds behind a high handed defense and taking his time picking his shots and landing some clean right hands.

Martinez would begin to load up in the ninth then carry his power attack into the tenth sitting down on his shots splitting Barkers guard.

Round eleven would start with some solid exchanges when just for a second Barker relaxed and Martinez would step around fire and score with a thumping right hook dropping Barker like a bag of potatoes leaving him there for a referee Eddie Cotton ten count ending it all at 1:29 of round eleven.

Martinez on a four bout win streak since dropping a majority decision to Paul Williams December 2009 improves to 48-2-2, 27Ko’s. Martinez has won his last three by KO including the devastating second round stoppage of Williams in the return bout followed by an eighth round stoppage of previously unbeaten Serhiy Dzinziruk coming into the Barker fight.

Lee would control most of the action staying behind his jab, shooting sharp 1-2’s. The Emanuel Steward trained Lee would be denied a second knockdown in the sixth when he landed a right hook and it appeared Vera’s glove touched the canvas.

Vera would keep pressing but Lee would fold bringing some leather from underneath and closing the show for a well deserved 98-91, 99-90 times two unanimous decision.

Wright and Cuba Claim Titles in Rematches
on Queens Action Packed Card!

By: Coach “K”
September 23rd, The Cordon Bleu, Woodhaven, New York: New Legend Promoter and Matchmaker Felipe Gomez joined with Universal Boxing and Old World Boxing Promotions to use a special pair co-features and a well matched undercard to supply a full house of avid boxing fans a full night of action packed entertaining professional boxing.

The main event of “Rematch” named card paired welterweights Mike Ruiz and Martin “Mardi Gras” Wright in a return bout of their May New York State Welterweight Title bout won by Wright bin a eight round split decision but this time it was the vacant NBA World Junior Intercontinental Title that would be on the line.

The bout a lefty, righty rematch would give us all any fight could offer. Ruiz charged out at the opening bell not hiding he was going to make his big right hand his main punch for the night flooring Wright with a heavy lead right about a minute in. When the action resumed Ruiz would drive Wright to the ropes scoring with a heavy left hook hurting Wright but some solid track work and timely clinching Wright would finish the round.

Round two saw Ruiz go right back on the attack landing another bunch of big rights but “Mardi Gras” wasn’t going to miss the party using his jab to regain his composure and survive another Ruiz onslaught.

In round three Wright appeared have his legs back under him as the two combatants would let the leather fly swapping rights and lefts for most of the round but Wright making his jab and body work the difference.

In round four Wright peppered with his jab until a cuffing left would toss a Ruiz to the deck as it appeared Ruiz may have punched himself out as his legs appeared to be weakening.

The two would trade rounds five and six with Ruiz taking five with more big rights and Wrights jab and body work would pile up giving him round six.

Wright would score a questionable knockdown in round seven but it wouldn’t effect the scoring as it was his his jab that was beginning to show its rewards on Ruiz left eye. Wright mixed up his work to the body and head adding in some timely clinches thwarting Ruiz offense which began to openly frustrated the power punching Long Islander.

Round eight had Wright’s early body work paying its dividends with Ruiz having no answer for “The Mardi gras” jab.

The rugged Ruiz would push the action in a wild round nine as the two game welterweights would again trade right and left bombs but Wright appeared to have the stronger legs now driving Ruiz through the ropes with a heavy combination to the body and head.

The final round was again pushed by Ruiz who had to feel he needed the one big shot. Wrights jab and with a heavy combination to close the fight denying him the big shot he so dearly needed securing him the victory. The judges scores were announced 97-90, 98-90, 96-91 all for Wright crowning him the new NBA Welterweight Champion. SBB scored it 96-92 with Wright’s educated right jab and solid body work the deciding factor.

With his new title Wright improves to 10-1-2, 5Ko’s while Ruiz three bout win streak ends leaving him at 15-5, 7Ko’s.

In the co-feature a rematch of their June NYS Championship draw Queen’s New York’s Johnathan Cuba picked himself up off the canvas in round one and turn around the action claiming the vacant NYS Lightweight Title with a spilt decision over Ariel Duran

In what was a very entertaining bout starting out as a classic boxer versus puncher bout Duran floored Cuba with a snapping counter right about one minute into the opening stanza.

Duran would look to box more using some slick moves to set up big counter rights but a determined Cuba would mix in a steady jab and a concentrated body attack hurting Duran several times through the eight round skirmish.

Some of the rounds were tight with both fighters having their moments but it would be Cuba’s body attack that would ultimately earn him edge. At the end of eight he scores were read 77-74 Cuba, 76-75 Duran and 76-75 for Cuba giving him a split decision win and the NYS Lightweight Title. Here at SBB we scored it 77-74 with Cuba’s pressure attack breaking Duran down. Cuba moves to 6-3-1, 4Ko’s as Duran falls to 7-3-1, 4Ko’s.

The nights action started fast with Stamford, Connecticut southpaw Rajiv Bhattacharya and Brooklyn’s experienced Arthur Medina trading leather heavy and often setting the tone for the night.

Medina assumed the role of aggressor with Bhattacharya fighting behind a tight defense delivering some solid counter punches. Bhattacharya would land the cleaner sharper punches grabbing a 39-37, 40-36 times two unanimous decision. SBB saw it 40-36 times three for Bhattacharya. Bhattacharya remains unbeaten at 8-0, 6Ko’s while the veteran Medina suffering his sixth straight loss falls to 14-23, 5Ko’s.

The second bout of the evening matched Brooklyn female bantamweight Vanessa Grecco and Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Tonia “TNT” Cravens. Greco would press the action early scoring with some clean looping right hands but the mobile Craven would use her speed putting her punches in bunches taking advantage of her height and reach cutting Greco over the right eye. Greco would back Craven up in the middle rounds but she wasn’t busy enough to hold off the New Mexico buzz saw who rallied in the final round firing quick punches in bunches salvaging a 38-38 times three draw. SBB had it the same only wishing it was a six rounder.

The third bout of the night had Queen’s New York Light heavyweight Ahmad Mickens facing Hempstead, Long Island’s Hamid Abdul Manteen in a scheduled four rounder. Mickens tried to box but throughout but Manteen set on pressing the action landed some big shots winning the exchanges while controlling the in fighting. Mickens would try to measure the charging Manteen but the determined Long Islander wouldn’t be denied out working Mickens to grab a 39-37, 40-36 times two unanimous decision. SBB scored it 39-37 Manteen the aggressor and landing the heavier shots. Manteen gets back in the win column at 3-2 while Mickens evens out at 1-1-1.

Bout number four saw Brooklyn southpaw lightweight Angel “Sweetness” Garcia remain cool and poised in his pro debut outclassing Bronx’s Jonathan Caban. Garcia using a mobile defense and a sharp shooting offense picked his shots through round one then sitting down a bit more on his punches in round two hurt Caban with a heavy left then pounded him with a two handed attack forcing referee Gonzalez to call it at 2:30 of round two. Garcia’s opener couldn’t have been sweeter leaving him 1-0,1Ko while a thoroughly beaten Caban remains in search of his first win at 0-2.

Next up was heavyweight action with Yonkers, heavy Thomas Hardwick coming by way of Dublin entering to sound of blaring bag pipes. Hardwick would proceed to outwork and out score Pine Bluff, Arizona’s durable Jamell Williams over four. Hardwick established his jab early against the bigger William’s but it was his right had doing most of the damage with Williams playing survivor early. Hardwick scored with clean combinations working Williams in and out turning his punches over and under.

Williams would stay tough but that’s about it as Hardwick would shutout the southwest fighter 40-36 times three. Hardwick improves to 3-0, 2Ko’s as Williams remains winless at 0-4.

Overall the three local promoters New Legend Boxing, Universal and Old World Promotions used some solid team work, old time boxing matchmaking with some local talent and a plush venue to do boxing right in Queens tonight.

Newer, Meaner O'Connor Destroys Del Cid

(September 21st) World-renowned trainer Ronnie Shields said his newest pupil, Super lightweight prospect Danny O'Connor (15-1, 4 KOs) was learning to sit down on his punches more.

He didn't lie. The new-and-improved O'Connor scored a devastating first-round knockout (1:20) over Jamal Del Cid of Mexico last night at the 10th annual Fight to Educate charity show at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

A huge overhand left did the job for O'Connor, who was coming back from his first professional loss last April.

"I've been working on putting more on my punches and being more aggressive and tonight it showed," said the jubilant winner, post-fight.

Shields told Stephen Tobey of Gatehouse News Service that he liked what he saw.

""He did great... He went out and did exactly what I wanted him to do. We've worked on making him more aggressive. He's a lot stronger than he thinks. Everyone thinks he can't punch, but he can punch. He's so used to not standing his ground. He'll get a lot more knockouts now."

It's been a trying five months since O'Connor suffered his defeat against Gabriel Bracero on national television. The 26-year-oldhas been living and training in Houston, leaving his family, wife Diane and six-month-old son, Liam, behind.

"It hasn't been easy, but I think the results speak for themselves," said O'Connor. "This is what I must do if I'm going to provide for my family and reach my dream of winning a world championship."

O'Connor's co-promoter, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing (along with DiBella Entertainment), says he's surprised how fast the effects of working with Shields could be seen on O'Connor.

"He was 100% better fighter tonight than he was before he got together with Ronnie. You've got to give the kid credit for packing up and moving to Texas and then for having the mental strength to adapt to this new style and really buy into what his coach is teaching him. Danny used to out-box his opponents and win decisions. Ronnie has shown him another way of winning: going in there and destroying a guy. That's what he did tonight. It's a new day. Danny O'Connor is on his way up."

Andrade Outclasses Duran

(September 21st) – Undefeated light middleweight Demetrius "The Cape Verdean Assassin" Andrade outclassed two-time world title challenger Saul "Baby" Duran en route to a victory by third-round knockout in tonight’s main event on the 10th annual Fight To Educate card at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Enjoying target practice for the full three rounds, Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs), fighting out of Providence, decked Duran at the end of the second and third rounds, unloading a series of crisp, hard punches. Duran was unable to answer the bell for the fourth round.
Now rated No. 14 by the World Boxing Council ("WBC") and No. 15 by the World Boxing Organization ("WBO"), the 23-year-old Andrade, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, appears to be closing in on a major, if not title fight, in 2012.

"I came out aggressively because he got me mad at the weigh in (Duran weighed in 2 ½ pounds over the contract weight and started eating a Snickers candy bar before he was forced to lose the added weight)," Andrade said after the fight. "The plan was to use my jab. He had a soft stomach and didn’t look like he was in great shape.

"As long as I use my speed, everything is easy. He’s a tough fighter who took some good blows. I hope to fight once more before the end of this year."

New Hampshire middleweight Jose "Stinger" Medina (15-9-1, 7 KOs) dropped Anibel Acevedo (13-8-1, 11 KOs), 1992 Olympic bronze medalist, at the end of round two. Acevedo failed to answer the bell for the third round.

Framingham (MA) light welterweight Danny O’Connor (15-1, 4 KOs), 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Alternate, rebounded from his first pro loss with an impressive first-round knockout of Mexican boxer Jamal Del Cid (7-6). Working with trainer Ronnie Shields in their first fight together, O’Connor unloaded a barrage on Del Cid, who was trapped on the ropes until the fight was halted.

New Hampshire featherweight Dan Powers (4-0, 2 KOs) kept his unbeaten record intact via a workmanlike four-round, unanimous decision versus a game Luis Rosario.

Vermont welterweight Chris Gilbert (2-0, 2 KOs) connected with a perfect placed right uppercut, stopping Noel Garcia in the opening round.

Mayweather / Ortiz, The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!

By: Coach “K”
September 17th, MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada; In the main event of Golden Boy Promotions “Star Power Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. displayed several sides of his multifaceted personality in his controvesial fourth round KO of "Vicious" Victor Ortiz.

The Good: The 35 year old now self proclaiming “Hall of Famer” Mayweather was demonstrating the skills that earned him an Olympic medal and 41 pro wins without a defeat when on the way to what appeared to be another lopsided boxing victory “Money” found him self on the receiving end of an unprovoked intentional headbutt.

Throughout most of four rounds Mayweather was in total control consistently scoring with crisp punches and big right hands, with the exception of a couple of times in which Ortiz backed him to the ropes displaying just enough offense to keep his fans hopes alive.

The Bad: At the 2:59 mark of round four following his best offensive volley an unprovoked Ortiz intentionally headbutted Mayweather prompting referee Cortez to step in and break up the fighters and immediately call for an Ortiz point deduction. That’s when things get real bad.

After breaking the fighters and stopping the fight following the headbutt, referee Cortez meandered in the ring never really taking control. When during the point deduction “timeout” Ortiz gestured to touch gloves in an apologetic move when Mayweather in what could only be described as a fully calculated move brought both his has high guard around his chin and suckered Ortiz with a crisp left hook right hand dropping Ortiz for a befuddled looking Cortez ten count. I never saw Cortez call time in.

There have been many dirty tactics employed in the history of boxing but it was after the above mentioned break that boxing would witness it’s latest edition. Along with his superior skills and defense Mayweather will now have his name on the lips of all boxing aficionados when they talk of boxing’s dirty fights. Not exactly reaching the depravity of the September 7th 1908 Billy Papke / Stanley Ketchel bout when Papke suckered Ketchel during the ceremonial touch of gloves breaking Ketchel’s nose before the opening bell before winning a twelfth round TKO but not far behind.

There’s the Dempsey / Sharkey left hook on the break that gave Dempsey a come from behind seventh round Ko win and let’s not forget the June 1997 Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield’s ear after feeling he was being intentionally headbutted or the Bowe / Golota low blow, kidney punch extravaganza which lead to an all out riot at Madison Square Garden July 1996 all casting a shadow over what should be boxing’s finest moment when two fighters meet in that championship moment. But in this case to be fair, the young misguided Ortiz got what he asked for as it was he who drew first blood initiating “Pretty Boy’s” not so pretty response.

You cannot leave referee out of this “bad” moment as it appeared referee Cortez was locked in a time warp losing control of the action finding himself just aware enough add the closing ten count.

The young immature Ortiz showed his confusion after the bout stating "I'm not a dirty fighter and I apologized for the head butt. You can look at this two ways. I came to entertain the fans, and I think they were entertained. There was a miscommunication by the ref, and neither he nor I or anyone is perfect. This is a learning experience. Floyd's a great fighter," Ortiz said, "but I'm still not convinced he's the greatest. I was doing just fine until that little slipup of mine."

The Ugly: Following the stoppage Mayweather unprovoked engaged HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant in a blistering obscenity filled interview calling for HBO to fire Merchant and Merchant replying he wished he was fifty years younger and kick his ass.

The newly crowned WBC Welterweight Champion Mayweather improves to 42-0, 26Ko’s while the newly “crowned” former champion Ortiz drops to 29-3-2, 22Ko’s.

We all know Mayweather will relish in his newly found thuggery saying after the fight that it only adds to his legacy doesn’t get it, it’s the “Sweet Science” we all come to see. The same “Sweet Science” he has used to remain unbeaten.

Looking back Ketchel and Papke they fought two more times with Ketchel winning both. The difference here is Ortiz opened the door and like many believe got what he deserved with the justification being boxing’s number one rule “protect yourself at all times.”

After the bout Mayweather stated: "Floyd Mayweather isn't ducking or dodging anyone. If he feels it didn't get done right the first time, or it was a fluke, I'll do it again. I'll do the same thing again."

One question the fight leaves is, where does Ortiz go from here? Despite saying he would give Ortiz a rematch I doubt we will ever see one and don’t know if boxing truly wants one, leading us back to the question of a Mayweather / Paquiao mega fight.

In defense of Mayweather, he did what any fighter would have, fight fire with fire but if that’s what boxing wanted they would just build a cage and take away the gloves. They already did that they call it MMA otherwise Mayweather should forget Manny Pacquiao and take on George St. Pierre next.

In what proved to be an entertaining bout the thirty five year old Morales remained patient scoring with the heavier, cleaner shots mainly big right hands swelling both of the twenty one year old Cano’s eyes while opening a severe cut the young but game Cano’s left eye prompting his corner to call the action at the conclusion of round ten.

By: Mike Rivers
September 10th, Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey: Cuban unbeaten featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa remained unbeaten with a solid eight round technical decision over former WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon.

Gamboa entering off fourth round knockout dismantling of Jorge Solis in March the Cuban star continued his superiority in the weight class with another solid performance out boxing Mexico’s Daniel Ponce De Leon.

Gamboa used his agility to gain complete control through the bout jetting in with multiple punch combinations then quickly sliding out of range before the former champion could counter. Never allowing Ponce De Leon to set and use his power Gamboa mixed up his punches and angles of attack until about the mid point of round eight when after an accidental clash of heads De Leon was cut over his left leading to a stoppage by the ringside physician at 1:24 of round eight. The bout was sent to the scorecards where Gamboa held an insurmountable 79-73, 80-72 times two unanimous decision.

Gamboa improving to 21-0, 16Ko’s said he is done at featherweight and has his eyes set on the bigger names in the game with Pacquiao and Donaire noted. Gamboa is expected to move up in weight when he returns early next year.

Adamek Joins Long List Beaten by Klitschko Jab and Right Hand!

By: Alfred Zimmerman
September 10th, Wroclaw, Poland: 40 year old 6’7” heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC Title with his fortieth KO in 45 fights stopping Polish challenger Tomasz Adamek in ten.

Giving away twenty seven pounds, six inches in height and five inches in reach
the courageous former light heavy and cruiserweight champion was out gunned and out classed with Klitschko winning all ten rounds in the one sided match with Adamek’s face wearing the proof.

Adamek fought stronger than the size difference but it was Klitschko’s skill that was the deciding factor with Adamek like forty two before him was never being able to solve the big Ukranian’s jab and big right hand.

Referee Massimo Barrovecchio after witnessing the proud challenger get blasted in round two and dropped in round six saved Adamek at 2:20 of round ten allowing him to battle another day.

Klitschko improves to 43-2, 40Ko’s while Adamek dips to 44-2, 28Ko’s.

McCloskey Edges Prescott in Khan Sweepstakes!

September 10th, Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland: In a close an highly controversial WBA Light Welterweight Title Eliminator Dungiven, Northern Ireland’s southpaw light welterweight Paul McCloskey for all practical purpose ended any chance of a Breidis Prescott, Amir Khan rematch picking himself up of the canvas in round one and go on to edge the “Khanqueror” 115-113, 114-113 times two.

Prescott the only one to have recorded a win over Khan stopping him in one round September 2008 started well controlling the action early but couldn’t hold on with McCloskey finishing hard over the tiring Britt.

Prescott rocked McCloskey in the sixth but fatigue appeared to keep him from finishing the job allowing McCloskey score well over Prescott’s sinking left. With the win McCloskey advances to 23-1, 12Ko’s as Prescott slips to 24-3, 19Ko’s.

Arroyo Hooks Sanchez in Ten, Kayode Unimpressive in Victory!

By: Joe Martin
September 9th, Grand Casino, Hinckley, Minnesota: In a battle of two Puerto Rican welterweight prospects with drawn out early careers marked by a single defeat Buffalo, New York’s Vincent “Vinsanity” Arroyo pulled out a ten round unanimous decision over Santurce, Puerto Rico’s Hector “El Flaco” Sanchez.

Early on the 6’1” Sanchez used his jab to control the distance and set up some quick right hands on the 5’9” Arroyo. In rounds two and three Sanchez continued to control the space using snapping counters to keep the pressing Arroyo at Bay.

In round four you could sense a change with Arroyo closing the distance banging to Sanchez body with heavy shots making the most of his double left hook.

Through the middle rounds the action was tight but Arroyo remained the aggressor backing Sanchez to the ropes landing the bigger punches.

In round eight Arroyo began to use his speed throwing whipping combinations only to have his assault interrupted by referee Mark Nelson’s second warning for a low blow. Sanchez temporarily became the aggressor following Arroyo around the ring when at about the middle mark of the round Arroyo landed a heavy counter left hook buckling Sanchez. For the next ninty seconds Arroyo banged away on Sanchez with both hands only to have the lanky Puerto Rican hold on to hear the bell.

Rounds nine and ten were very entertaining with Sanchez rallying at times but the cleaner heavier punches specifically Arroyo’s left hook was the difference in the 98-92, 98-92, 96-94 unanimous decision announced for Arroyo.

Recording his third straight win since his only defeat to Mike Dallas Jr. September 2009 Arroyo improves to 12-1, 7Ko’s while Sanchez dropping two of his last three falls to 19-2, 9Ko’s.

In the co-feature: After running of fourteen straight Ko’s Nigeria’s unbeaten cruiserweight Lateef “Power” Kayode won his third straight decision with an unimpressive ten round decision over Galveston, Texas Felix “Bad News” Cora Jr.

Kayode who has sharpened his jab repeatedly scored with slapping or cuffing rights mysteriously missing the “Power” that had made him a cruiserweight contender.

Cora pressed the action and at times punching in combination thwarted Kayode’s offense. Scoring at times with clean combinations Cora let slip away an opportunity that he probably won’t realize until tomorrow.

Kayode appearing lethargic at times and losing a point for low blows in the final round remained unbeaten with the 97-92, 96-93, 98-92 unanimous decision improving to 18-0, 14Ko’s. after hearing the “Bad News” and allowing the opportunity of a career slip Cora falls to 22-6-2, 12Ko’s.

On the undercard: Featherweight Jeremy McLaurin won an eight round majority decision over Gary Eyer, light heavyweight Harley Kilfian TKO’ed Tim Taggart in four, welterweight Hector Orozco won a five round unanimous decision over Tony Lee and cruiserweight TJ Gibson TKo’ed Al Sands in the final round of their scheduled four rounder.

By: Edwin Gonzalez
September 9th, Asylum Arena, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: In the main event of a J. Russell Peltz, Don Chargin, Golden Boy Promotion Philly light middleweight Gabriel “King” Rosado scored an impressive one sided shutout victory over York, Pennsylvania’s over matched Kevin Collins.

Fully enjoying himself Rosado in Hector Camacho style picked his shots shooting in and out mixing up some dancing, boxing, punching and taunting completely disarming his clueless opponent winning a lopsided 100-90 times three shutout decision. With one win in his last nine the game and durable Collins could do no more than play the role of target for the talented Rosado.

Rosado who emerged on the scene with an eight round upset of James Moore June 2008 and has battled the likes of Fernando Guerrero, Alfredo Angulo and Derek Ennis improved to 18-5, 10-Ko’s but faces his biggest fight to date next week when he is expected in court after being charged with aggravated assault and causing a riot following his Ko win over Ayi Bruce in his last bout July 15th at Bally's Atlantic City, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Collins falls to 13-7, 9Ko’s.

In the semi main attraction: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s unbeaten welterweight Ronald Cruz kept his zero with an impressive six round retirement of Salt Lake City, Utah’s declining Christopher “Kid Kayo” Fernandez.

Cruz repeatedly beat Fernandez to the punch launching blistering combinations leading to a fith round knockdown and a sixth round retirement.

Cruz improves to 14-0, 11Ko’s while Fernandez who has battled Ali Oubaali, Devon Alexander, Paul Malignaggi, Nick Casal, Prenice Brewer, Danny Garcia, Sharif Bogere, Gabriel Bracero and Miguel Gonzales drops his fourth in a row and seven of his last eight falling to 19-14-1, 12Ko’s.

Berto Wastes No Time, Wants Rematch with Ortiz!

By: Rich Neary
(September 3rd) While tropical storm Lee was brewing outside the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi Andre Berto and Jan Zaveck were going full tilt inside.

Former WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto became a champion again claiming the IBF Welterweight title with a fifth round RTD of Slovenia’s Jan Zaveck.

The match-up of the two single loss fighters started fast with Berto set on mixing it up while breaking down Zaveck with a solid body attack.

Berto controlled the first four rounds with Zaveck wearing the rewards of Berto’s left around his right eye. Then in the fifth round Zaveck pick it up but after having his best round the fight was stopped between rounds when the proud Slovenian’s corner called the bout realizing the charge could not see out his right eye.

Zaveck appeared to have sensed the urgency but the damage was done and Berto wasted no time making it clear he wants a rematch with “Vicious” Victor Ortiz to whom he lost his WBC Title in April.

Berto, 28-1, 22Ko’s told HBO, "I was stuck in a cage the last few months, I'm focused, I'm ready, I'm hungry, Victor Ortiz, we definitely want to do it again."

Ortiz is making the most of that title defending it for the first time against Floyd Mayweather on the “Star Power” card September 17th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Berto Stops Zaveck, Regains Welterweight Title

(September 3rd) Earlier tonight, DiBella Entertainment in association with SES Boxing presented, Battle in Biloxi: Zaveck vs. Berto, which featured former WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto taking on IBF Champion, Jan Zaveck in the main event bout of the evening on HBO's Boxing After Dark at the Beau Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

With both fighters having something to prove; Berto coming off the first loss of his professional career and Zaveck fighting for the first time in the U.S. and on first time on HBO; the two wasted little time in getting the action started, each coming out fast in the first and showing their willingness to exchange.

The action in the first was just a preview of what was to come as each round saw both fighters exchanged furious combinations. Both fighters took their turns pressing forward and fighting on the inside, with Berto looking to use a heavy body attack to open up Zaveck's peek-a-boo defense.

In the fifth, some swelling developed under Berto's eye, while Zaveck's face becam a complete mess, with nasty cuts and heavy swelling developing on both eyes. Between rounds, Zaveck's corner, realizing that Zaveck was unable to see, called a halt to the contest.

It was a very impressive showing for Berto, who improved to 28-1, 21KO's, picking up the IBF Welterweight Crown, while Zaveck, who showed he is a true force in the welterweight division, record falls to 30-2, 18KO's.

In the main supporting bout of the evening, 2008 U.S. Olympian, Gary Russell Jr. stayed perfect, improving to 18-0, 10KO's with a dominate eight round decision over Mexico's Leonilo Miranda. Russell's hand speed and combination punching were too much for Miranda, as he won by scores of 80-72, 80-72, 79-72 on all three judge's scorecards.

Battle in Biloxi Undercard Results!!!

Kimbo Slice Annihilates Debut Opponent!

(August 14th) Last night, on a card promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Tony Holden Promotions at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma, Street Certified fighting legend Kimbo Slice made a very impressive debut in professional boxing, as he knocked opponent James Wade completely unconscious with a right hook/uppercut in just 10 seconds.

Slice, the former MMA star who gained notoriety with his brutal You Tube-posted street fights, moved his record to 1-0, 1 KO with a punch that left poor Wade draped over the bottom rope like linguine. Paramedics and on-site medical staff were able to revive Wade after a few minutes.

Reminiscent of the "hookercut" that made former heavyweight contender Razor Ruddock famous, Slice brought a half hook/half uppercut to the chin of Wade and he was out before he hit the canvas. "I don't feel like I got completely under the punch," said a humble slice, post-fight. "I don't give myself a good performance in there, but I'm serious about making a run in boxing and I'm headed right back to camp in California."

The crowd in attendance would disagree with Slice's evaluation, as they went absolutely insane at the awesome display of power.

"They love him here," said promoter Gary Shaw. "His ring entrance music was drowned out completely by their cheering. It really made for an exciting atmosphere. That's the electricity Kimbo brings when he fights."

Referee Mora Turn’s SHOWTIMES “Winner Takes All” Bantamweight Final Into a “How Low Can You Go” a 12 Round  Controversial Majority Decision!

By: Phil Kane
August 13th, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada: In the final of Showtime's “Winner Takes All” Bantamweight Tournament Mexico’s Abner Mares with the help of a less than steller performance by referee Russell Mora won a hotly contested foul filled twelve round majority decision over Bronx New York’s IBF Bantamweight Champion Joseph “ King Kong” Agbeko.

The action quickly with Mare’s speed showing its influence early with the young Mexican star being credited for a knockdown when hitting Agbeko already on the way down after a slip resulting in a quick 10-8 round.

In round two Mares continued to attack Agbeko’s body but the tough new Yorker appeared to settle in a bit and had a better round.

In round three Mares usually a slow starter continued the pressure attack going to Agbeko’s body and straying low again. Mares out works Agbeko in the round landing a big left hook upstairs.

Round four saw Agbeko use his jab more setting up a big overhand right buckling Mares who then fought cautiously while Agbeko surprisingly didn’t turn up the pressure.

In round five Mares still appearing a bit cautious continued to punch in combination doubling his hook as Agbeko began to throw and land his right with a bit more frequency. Mares couldn’t get out of the round without again going low at the 0:30 second mark getting another warning from referee Mora.

Round six saw Agbeko begin to use his jab more while Mares landed some clean counter rights before an accidental clash of heads opening a small cut on Mares left eye put a lull in the action. Mares goes low again in the closing seconds.

In round seven Agbeko has Mares backing up going to his right hand targeting Mares cut but the young Mexican Olympian continued to answer with quick combinations only to go low again late in the round giving resulting in referee Mora warning Agbeko seconds later for grabbing on.

Round eight was very close round with both Mares and Agbeko throwing a lot of leather with Agbeko closing strong.

Round nine started fast with both fighters throwing power shots and going to the body. About a minute into the round Agbeko complained of a Mares low blow only drawing a warning from referee Mora for pulling Mares down who then turned and half heartedly warned Mares again for throwing low.

In round ten Mares used his jab more as Agbeko appeared to be finding his edge landing a clean right hand left hook combo. Agbeko scored with a big right downstairs then finding an opening began to tag Mare’s with some good uppercuts. Agbeko punching in combination is having a great round when at about the 0:40 mark referee Mora stopped the bout allowing Agbeko a rest for another Mare’s low blow again without making a point deduction. When the action resumed Mares went back to Agbeko’s body fearless of any penalty.

Round eleven saw Mares and Agbeko trade a right for a left with Agbeko adding a good uppercut only to be out done by another “clear” low blow scored by referee Mora as a knockdown.

The twelfth and final round was a tight one with Mares boxing now as if he has the fight in the bag while was Agbeko continued to pressed the action.

When the judges scores were announced 113-113 even, 115-111 two times for Mares Agbeko had to be restrained by his corner from approaching referee Mora sturring him tocall for an immediate rematch and have his team announce they intend to file an official protest on Monday with the IBF.

Mares happy with the win hinted he didn’t want his big night to tarnished went on to say he is open to anything. With the win Mares claims the IBF belt improves to 22-0-1, 13Ko’s while Agbeko slips to 28-3, 22Ko’s.

In the semi main attractions, former WBA Flyweight Champion Eric “Little Hands of Steel” Morel advanced to 45-2, 23ko’s scoring his tenth straight victory when Mexico’s Daniel Quevedo could not answer the bell for round five. Quevedo, falls to 13-12-2, 8Ko’s.

Raymondville, Texas heavyweight Eric Molina claimed the vacant WBC USNBC Heavyweight Title with a third round stoppage of London, Kentucky's “Hitman” Warren Browning. Molina now 18-1, 14Ko’s now having won eighteen straight since dropping his pro debut. Browning, 2-2 in his last four bouts drops to 14-2-1, 9Ko’s.

On the undercard: Light welterweight Angelo Santana TKO’ed Ramzan Adaev in two to claim the vacant WBA Fedecaribe Light Welterweight Title and light welterweight Carlos Molina battled to an eight round draw with Juan Montiel.

Overall the SHOWTIME Bantamweight Tournament was a very exciting successful event only to be marred by the only man in the ring not supposed to effect the action. Mora who claimed the punches were on the line did not account for the numerous warnings without a point deduction only to say that’s how he saw it. The spectacle less Mora’s failure to enforce the low blow rule whether buy interpretation or being out of position unfortunately will be remembered.

Channel 5 executives were left thrilled by 6ft 9' Fury's sensational performance in the victory over Dereck Chisora at Wembley Arena which attracted a peak audience figure of 3m viewers - demonstrating once again the appeal of boxing to the public. British and Commonwealth champion Fury is now ready to become a global star with not only Channel 5 but American broadcasters eager to screen his future fights. Fury's promoter Mick Hennessy believes the victory over Chisora is just the start of a great journey for the 22-year-old right to the top of world boxing.  Hennessy said: "The figures for Channel 5 were fantastic and I have to give great credit to Channel 5 because they listened to me and they believed in me when I told them about Tyson, unlike other broadcasters. "When I promoted the World title fight between Carl Froch and Jean Pascal the figures were roughy 2.9m and that was a World title on ITV with a big build-up. This is just the start for Tyson, he's a winner in the ring and he's a winner with the public sitting at home wanting to see a proper fighter and a guy who has the charisma to entertain them. "The future is looking very bright for Tyson, we want him to win the Irish title next and then the European title and Channel 5 now have the opportunity to bring those fights to an even bigger audience. (July 16th) – Undefeated prospect Michael “Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira (15-0, 12 KOs) captured the vacant World Boxing Council Latino middleweight title in tonight’s main event on the “Sao Paulo Fight Night” pro-am card, by way of a sudden sixth-round knockout of Jose“Minquito” Soto (24-8-2, 13 KOs), at Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo. The 21-year-old Oliveira, rated No. 18 by the World Boxing Council, is a Brazilian native fighting out of Miami. “Sao Paulo Fight Night,” presented by MO Productions, was the third installment in a six-fight, two-year deal with Brazilian network giant, TV Globo. Oliveira displayed an improved jab in a feeling-out opening round, in which he showed patience and, under new trainer Orlando Cueller, a much different game plan than in the past, calling for Oliveira to brawl less and box more from a distance. The action picked-up in the second as Soto was more aggressive, but Oliveira effectively worked the body in the third round and start to breakdown his game Dominican opponent. In the fourth round, Oliveira’s power advantage became more apparent, when he trapped Soto on the ropes, rocking him with straight rights. Soto came back in the fifth but a wicked left to the body, quickly followed by a devastating right uppercut, ended the fight early in the sixth. “I’m quicker when I keep my hands low and I’m loose,” Oliveira commented, “but I had to keep my hands high because of head-butts. We changed strategy three times. He didn’t fade, hit like a mule, and kept coming. I felt my body punching was effective. I followed Orlando’s instructions; when he said to go to the head at the right time, or to go the body at the right time. Victory came easier because I listened to my corner. “I’ve improved a lot because of my experiences working in the gym. I have a high-quality team that took the time to not only work on my defects, but they saw my offense. I’d give myself a seven grade (on scale of 1-10). My goal is to fight for a world title. My team will evaluate me, help me work to continue improving, and schedule my next fight. They’ll let me know when I’m ready for a world title fight.” Michael’s father and the show’s promoter, Carlos Oliveira, was pleased by the overall success of the show, as well as the improvement his son displayed before a passionate crowd. “The show was a complete success,” he remarked, “other than we had to delay going live because of a soccer game going late on television. I saw improvement from Michael. His defense was a little better and he was much more patient. While he was fighting I think he thought about his last fight, which kept him more focused on what to do.” Cueller was happy with Michael’s performance in what was their first time working together in a fight. “We had to make adjustments during the fight,” Cueller explained. “His opponent was heavy handed and determined. He was a decent inside fighter, too. Michael used his jab and timed his opponent’s jab well. He used his jab and moved his head more than he ever did in the past. He worked the body and took advantage at the end. Michael executed everything I asked of him. He did a good job.” World boxing champion Glen Johnson, who trains with Oliveira at Thump Fight Gym in Miami, walked Michael into the ring as a show of friendship and support. “Michael did a good job,” Johnson said. “He knows that has a lot of stuff to work on, especially defense, but he’s young and still a work in progress. He forced some shots to the head when there were some clean shots to the body, but he continues to get better and he’s heading in the right direction. He has Orlando Cueller in his corner to guide him and all Michael has to do is listen to him and work hard. He is determined.” Complete Results: MIDDLEWEIGHTS Michael Oliveira (15-0, 12 KOs), Miami, FL WKO6 (0.36) Jose Soto (24-8-2, 13 KOs), La Vega, Dominican Republic (Oliveira won WBC Latino middleweight title) LIGHT MIDDLEWEIGHTS: Douglas Ataide (2-0, 0 KOs), Sao Paulo, Brazil WDEC6 (60-53, 60-53, 58-53) Jack Welson (14-7, 12 KOs), Sao Paulo, Brazil AMATEUR MATCHES FEMALE FEATHERWEIGHTS Clelia Marques Costa, Sao Paulo, Brazil WPTS Amanda Coelho, Amazonia, Brazil FEMALE MIDDLEWEIGHTS Andrea Bandeira, Sao Paulo, Brazil WPTS Daniele Bastielli, Sao Paulo, Brazil Go to www.MichaelOliverira.com  for more information and pictures. The action started quickly with “The Raging Bull” applying the pressure from the opening bell. Throught the early rounds Wolak was Rodriguez shadow never out of punching range and on the few occasions he would immediately jab his way right back. The combatants would frequently just trade big shots as the fight turned into the epic boxer vs pressure fighter. Remaining poised the middle rounds saw Rodriguez begin to find success with quick combinations making the most of his right uppercut and left hooks which began to show their wares in round six with Wolak wearing a large hematoma over his right eye. Rios and Antillon went toe to toe from the opening bell exchanging leads and power shots. The action would remain hot and heavy with Antillon getting in his share but Rios appeared to be landing the heavier shots. Both fighters scored well underneath with Antillon having his best moments inside while Rios stepping back at times opening up the space doubled and tripled his lefts under and over mixing in right uppercuts and looping rights. In the third Antillon would hit the canvas twice both times from looping right counters with the later rocking and dropping the battle tested Mexican hard. With no eight counts in the state of California Rios seeing Antillon wobbling back to the ropes after making it upright attempted to circle around the ring official but the alert and nimble foot David Mendoza cut “Bam Bam” off at the pass calling the fight at 2:39 of round three. Antillon at 28-3, 20Ko’s suffering only his third loss in thirty one bouts and his loses coming to top class fighters like Miguel Acosta, Humberto Soto and now Rios does appear to wear the effects of war but still should find himself in line for another shot at the lightweight title. Rios still unbeaten improves to 28-0-1, 21Ko’s and has securely established himself as one of boxing’s most exciting stars and with promoter bob Arum calling for a Rios / Pacquiao bout in 2013 Mayweather better ---- or get off the pot. In the semi main attraction Chicago, Illinois transplanted Mexican Carlos “King” Molina secured himself as someone to be dealt with in the light middleweight division, scoring a one sided ten round decision over former IBF Welterweight Champion Kermit "Killer" Cintron. Molina fighting possessed since losing three in a row 2006-07 to then undefeated fighter has turned and burned going 10-0-1, 2Ko’s added Kermit “Killer’ Cintron to his resume out working , outscoring the former champion in impressive fashion. Cintron absent from the ring for fourteen month since losing a fluke four round technical decision to Paul Williams May 2010 looked as if his feet were in cement and the band was playing a song one beat in front of the former champion. Molina’s tight defense, combination punching and in fighting allowed him to be first and last most times avoiding “Killers” big right hand and almost repeating the Williams bout fiasco in round eight when Molina banged home a good right to the body and another to the head almost dumping Cintron ringside. Cintron remained upright and at times competitive but waited to the final round to score his best shot a clean right that fell irrelevant. Molina dominated the night winning a one sided 98-92 times three unanimous decision. Falling to 32-4-1, 28Ko’s the Ronnie Shield s trained Cintron offered no excuses ala David Haye. Molina now 19-4, 6Ko’s who’s only blemish since his three bout skid is a controversial draw with unbeaten Cuban star Erislandy Lara lines himself up for some very interesting bouts. In a battle of southpaws Williams possessing an obvious height and reach advantage started fast and continued to out work Lara but the skilled Cuban repeatedly scored with clean left hands nullifying any advantage which could be gained by the former champion. Williams continued to out work Lara but the Cuban’s radar left was scoring the cleaner harder shots. Round four was marked by a Williams low blow as the fifth featured a clash of heads which left a cut over Williams left eye and a large mouse over Lara’s left eye. Williams remained the aggressor throughout the fight but Lara continued to pot shot and counter Williams with the cleaner shots mostly hard lefts. When it came time to go to the cards judge Al Bennett had it even at 114-114 while judges Hilton Whitaker and Don Givens scored the fight for Williams 115-114 and 116-114 respectively. When the scores were announced it was received by the howl of a highly disgruntled crowd voicing their disapproval. The punch stats were close with Williams landing 200 of 1047 thrown landing 161 of 766 power shots while Lara scored with 224 of 530 thrown 178 of 363 being power shots mostly clean heavy left hands. Williams now 40-2, 27Ko’s looks towards a rematch with Sergio Martinez while Lara slipping to 15-1-, 10Ko’s called for an immediate rematch. Here at SBB we had it 116-114 Lara and if the Cuban could punch like Martinez the fight would have never gone to the cards. Once again boxing fans get punished with seeing eye dog scoring emphasizing why true boxing fans love fighters like Ricky Hatton and now Brandon Rios who will leave no doubt either way. In the co-main attraction Mexico’ City’s WBC Featherweight Champion Jhonny Gonzales successfully defended the title he took from Hozumi Hasegawa in April stopping Tomas “El Norteno” Villa with a drilling body shot at 0:49 of round four. In a second co-feature unbeaten California super bantamweight Rico “Suavecito” Ramos well behind on the scorecards kept his zero scoring a striking one punch KO Japan southpaw Akifumi Shimoda's WBA World Super Bantamweight Title.
