Luis Ramos Jr. Over Beltran in Ten Round War,
Figueroa Paints Perez in Seven!

By: Joe Martin
January 6th, Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California: Golden Boy Promotions unbeaten "Fight Night Club" star Luis Ramos Jr. claimed the vacant NABA USA Lightweight Title winning a hotly contested ten round battle over Freddie Roach trained Raymundo "Sugar" Beltran.

The twenty three year old Ramos fighting almost entirely in California entered off his biggest win to date a fifth round KO of David Rodela to survive the pressure from the thirty year old Beltran Manny Pacquiao's main sparing partner and cuts from unintentional headbutts over both eyes.

Beltran moved forward from the opening bell throwing heavy right hands and solid left hooks while the sharper punching Ramos a southpaw at times using cute angles answered with a solid body attack and clean counter right hooks to grab the 96-94, 97-93 times two unanimous decision.

The was fight closer than the 97-93 cards would suggest with many rounds very close but here at SBB we scored it 96-94 for Ramos leaving just enough room for any Beltran fan to make their case.

Ramos improves to 21-0, 9Ko's while Beltran losing his second closely contested battle having dropped a controversial decision to Sharif Bogere in May falls to 25-6, 17Ko's.

In the night’s co-feature a battle of evenly matched unbeaten lightweights saw Weslaco, Texas 22 year old Omar "Panterita" Figueroa out work and out will Newark, New Jersey's 21 year old Michael "The Artist" Perez.

It would be Figueroa trained by his father and former world champion Jesse James Leija doing the painting right from the start. The highly skilled, sharp shooting Perez would win the beginning of most rounds landing some clean heavy shots only to be outworked by the relentless pressure and solid body punching of Figueroa. "Panterita" never allowing an opportunity to move his hands slip by would leave a physically and mentally beaten Perez on his stool not answering the bell for round seven.

Figueroa still unbeaten but disappointed with his power stating "I hit him with all my best shots but he didn’t go down,” remains unbeaten at 14-0-1, 11Ko's while Perez suffering his first defeat claimed “It was my legs I had no power since round two, I’m disappointed.” "The Artist" slips to 15-1-1, 9Ko's.

The fight seen as a monstrous mismatch with the champion Wonjongkam, 83-3-2, 45Ko’s a veteran of 87 bouts going into the fight and the “unbeaten” Mukai six ending so quickly leaves Wonjongkam relatively fresh for a possible unification bout with WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria who recently banged out Giovanni Segura earlier this month.

Ward Plays Mongoose Dominating Froch Through Twelve!

By: Peter Falcone
December 17th, Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey: Oakland’s, California’s Andre “SOG” Ward unified the WBA and WBC winning SHOWTIMES Super Six \Final with a one sided unanimous decision over UK’s Carl “The Cobra” Froch.

In the wild the mongoose kills cobras regularly unless the more powerful cobra gets lucky. The mongoose much faster than the cobra attacks grabbing and biting his prey behind the neck. There would be no grabbing or biting behind the neck but Ward like a mongoose was the quicker fighter hand and foot controlling the range never allowing Froch usually the busier heavier puncher to remain in range beating him on the outside or smothering his shots on the inside. Ward like the mongoose was faster than Froch scoring with his jab and then in combination while slipping Froch’s sluggish punches.

Froch hit Ward after the bell of one round but it appeared unintentional as Froch appeared unable to hear the bell due to the loud crowd noise Referee Steve Smoger did a great job and would play no part in the scoring.

Neither fighter touched the canvas nor was there any doubt Froch would not be the lucky cobra tonight. There would be no controversy in the scoring as Ward brought the whole package fighting inside and out remaining slippery on defense making it easy for the judges whose scores were announced unanimous for Ward with judge John Keane scoring it118-110 and judges Craig Metcalfe and John Stewart marking it115-113. Here at SBB we had it 117-111.

Ward who’s journey through the Super Six tournament included wins over former champion Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green, Arthur Abraham (semi-final) and Froch remains unbeaten at 25-0, 13Ko’s now holding two thirds of the top Super Middleweight Belts and in line for a showdown with IBF Champion Lucian Bute, 30-0, 24Ko’s. Ward said he was open to a rematch with Froch now 28-2, 20Kos who in the tournament scored a split decision win over Andre Dirrell before in his first career loss gave up the WBC title to Mikkel Kessler then winning back the vacant WBC title with a unanimous decision over Arthur Abraham and a majority decision win over Glen Johnson in the semifinals.

Keeping with Washington's Policy of Wealth RE-Distribution Referee Joe Cooper Gives Lamont Peterson, Amir Khans WBA Super World and IBF Light Welterweight Titles!
__________________________________________________________________________________________

(Do the faces tell a story?)

By: Joe Martin
December 10th, Convention Center, Washington, DC: To sum up last nights very entertaining and action filled WBA and IBF Welterweight Title fight between the UK's Amir "King" Khan and DC's own Lamont "Havoc" Peterson one might just call it an extension of Washington's policy of re-distribution of wealth.

In a fight where Amir Khan appeared to jump to a large points lead Virginia based referee Joe Cooper played a big role almost immediately waving off a knockdown of Peterson after Khan had knocked the challenger into referee Cooper and down to the canvas about midway through the opening round.

Khan would repeat the feat closing the round with a big right hand on the button dropping Peterson into the ropes then to the deck for what could have been a two point round.

Khan would hold the edge through round two fighting on the move while Peterson looked indecisive.

Round three would see Peterson change his game pressing the action more scoring better in the rounds numerous exchanges.

In rounds four and five Khan picking his spots and at times fighting out of a shell scored with some big counter shots continually motioning to Peterson he had no punch. Referee Cooper appeared to have Khans name stuck in his head as that's all you could here.

Round six saw Khan on retreat with Peterson winning the in fight banging the champion to the body as he laid on the ropes.

In round seven after a moment of confusion referee Cooper separated the fighters halted the action and deducted a point from Khan for pushing without a hard warning.

Peterson who grew up o the streets of Washington with his brother Anthony who won earlier returned to the body in the eighth.

In round nine just when Peterson appeared to be getting to the champion, Khan responded with a right wobbling Peterson.

Through the championship rounds the champion returned to moving and boxing scoring with clean counters and big uppercuts with the challenger in hot pursuit.

In round twelve Khan was throwing combinations with Peterson on the hunt when referee Joe Cooper would make his mark on what up to that point was a very exciting fight taking another point from Khan for pushing.

Referee Cooper's point deduction would have a tremendous impact on what was a very impressive fight by both fighters no matter which way you scored the bout.

The judges scores were announced first a 113-112 for Peterson then a 115-110 for Khan and the third shocking many a second 113-112 for Peterson as when you consider the two point deduction from Khan in effect giving the fight to Peterson.

“Every time I tried to keep him away from me he kept coming in low, I was the cleaner fighter. He was so wild in there. He was either going to head butt me or push me all night. The referee wasn’t giving me a chance.”

I scored the fight 114-11 for Khan but its not that alone that irks me its that even if you scored the fight for Peterson if you disregard the two point deduction its a title defense for Khan. Even take it one step further give Peterson the round seven and twelve and the point deductions just mar Peterson's accomplish.

The point Cooper took from Khan a minute into the final round kept Khan from winning the round on all three cards. Without the point deductions Khan would have kept his titles with a 115-111, 113-112, 113-112 unanimous decision.

Many saw the fight a draw even with the deductions only taking away from a great performance by both fighters as one could easily make the case for either fighter.

Shortly after the controversial decision was announced Peterson's stated he would be willing to fight Khan again even traveling to Khan's home in the UK. Khan replied to the news; “I’m ready for a rematch, he wants to do a fight I’m here.”

“It was like fighting two people in the ring, the referee and Lamont,” Khan said. “I can see why there hasn’t been a big fight in Washington in the last 20 years, because of decisions like this.”

Lemieux who split with long time trainer Russ Anber following being stopped by 31 year old Mexican veteran Marco Antonio Rubio in April appeared to shelve his attacking style boxing Alcine early taking the first three rounds until Alcine found a home for his right in round four.

In the following rounds Alcine matched Lemieux's work rate and appeared to be turning the tide in the sixth.

Lemieux would continue use his jab but Alcine clowning and taunting the young Lemieux appeared to befuddle the young fighter at times changing the tide of the fight with his aggression and activity.

The antics would fade as the elder statesmans work rate picked up allowing him to grab a tight 114-114, 116-112 times two split decision and the WBC International Middleweight Title.

In the co-feature Canada's super middleweight "Superman" Adonis Stevenson in a less than skill filled fight used his "super" powers to floor Aaron Pryor Jr. three times before enroute to a ninth round stoppage of the son of World Light Welterweight Champion and Boxing Hall of Famer Aaron Pryor.

Pryor would attempt to box but the pressing Stevenson would bull his way in flooring the 33 year old Pryor once in the first, twice in the third and again one in the ninth prompting Pryors corner to call the bout at 0:43 0f round nine. At the time of the stoppage Stevenson was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards 80-69, 79-69 and 78-71.

Retaining his NABA super middleweight belt and adding the NABO and IBF Intercontinental tiles "Superman" improving to 16-1, 13Ko's quickly called out Montreal's undefeated IBF champion Lucian Bute while Pryor losing three of his last four 16-5, 11Ko's.

By: David Colon

The see saw battle fought early in the center of the ring was dominated by Viloia's quicker hands leaving the power punching Segura marked up and Viloria cut over his left eye.

The fourth round would see Viloria score with a big right hand, left hook rocking the ballooned faced Mexican.

In round seven Viliora continually beating Segura to the punch landed a thudding left hook to the now bubbled Segura's right eye forcin referee Samuel Viruet to stop the onesided fight with 29 seconds into round eight.

In the semi main event a IBF Super Featherweight Eliminator bout Mexico's Martin " El Brochas" Honorio won a closly contested twelve round fight over Thailand's Fahsai "Mountain Man" Sakkreerin. Jones "Resurrection" a Unanimous Decision Over Alexander

By: Phil Kane
December 10th, Civic Center, Atlanta, Georgia: Former eight time, four division world champion 42 year old cruiserweight Roy Jones Jr. won a 10-round unanimous decision over Camden, New Jersey 's opponent Max Alexander to begin his self proclaimed "Resurrection" andreturn to the top.

Jones entering off three straight losses to Danny Green, Bernard Hopkins and Denis Lebedev out pointed the semi retired Alexander who not having fought since 2009 and winless in his last six going back to 2007 by the sores of 100-90, 99-91 and 100-90.

It was like Jones the analyst showed up for the fight looking slow and powerless an not even like a threat to the divisions to 50. Almost like watching himself in the mirror of his mind Jones attempted a quick impersonation of the former pound for pound champion to improve to 55-8, 40Ko's.

Maybe this is too tough but true Roy Jones fans need to do the former champion a big favor and refuse to buy tickets no matter where he appears on the card.

On the undercard: Saint Louis, Missouri southpaw light heavyweight Ryan " The Irish Outlaw" Coyne put out Cincinnati, Ohio's "Inferno" Dante Craig dropping him and pounding him in the second round convincing him to remain on his stool for round three. Coyne improves to 19-0, 8Ko's as Craig winless in his last four falls to 18-12-1, 13Ko's. The unbeaten Coyne has his eyes locked on WBA World Cruiserweight Champion Guillermo Jones.

Mansour and Mendoza thrilled the sellout crowd at Dover Downs with Mansour throwing some wicked shots to the head and body of Mendoza. Mendoza showed surprisingly good defense and decent counter punching ability. Tensions grew during the fight as both landed shots after the bell that nearly incited a brawl.

In the sixth, Mansour landed a huge flurry of punches that forced the corner of Mendoza to throw in the towel.

Mansour, ranked number seven by the WBO raised his mark to 16-0 with twelve knockouts and he indicated the he is ready to take on anybody in the top ten.
Mendoza fought well but he falls to 32-13-1.

In the co-feature, Light Heavyweight Anthony Caputo Smith, had a few tense moments but scored an incredible final round stoppage over Douglas Okola in a six round bout.

Smith was dropped and then cut badly over his right eye and it was looking like his perfect mark would be falling by the wayside. In the final round Okola walked into a huge left hook that put him down and out and in an instant Smith scored the knockout. Smith is now 12-0 with ten knockouts.

Veteran Dorin Spivey scored his 40th professional victory with a solid six round unanimous decision over rugged and tough as nails Angel Rios in a Lightweight bout.

Spivey boxed well by putting some solid combinations together. Rios never had any quit in him and kept coming forward and even buckled Spivey during the fight.

Cotto Boxes Margarito, Closes Eye and the Show After Nine, Rios Stops Murray in Eleven and Complete Card Results!

By: Coach "K"
December 3rd, Madison Square Garden: In the rematch of their July 2008 meeting hyped by the speculation of Antonio Margarito loaded hand wraps, WBA Super World Light Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto got his revenge with a brilliant boxing exhibition. Cotto driven by a large Puerto Rican following moved around the pressing Margarito sticking with his jab and firing sharp combinations targeting his challenger and arch enemy's surgically repaired right eye resulting in a one sided tenth round stoppage.

Cotto fighting before a sold out crowd of over 20,000 mostly roaring Cotto fans successfully defended his title for the second time while exacting a fair share of retribution on his arch rival when after nine rounds Margarito with his surgically repaired right eye closed the ringside doctor stopped the contest.

It was about this mark in the first meeting Margarito began to catch and punish Cotto but the proud Puerto Rican fighter would have none of it this time around slickly controlling the action keeping Margarito in chase rather than control.

Margarito, who was suspended six months after the first Cotto bout for attempting to use loaded hand wraps in his bout with Shane Mosley used his usual pressure attack and did have his moments on the inside but the quick footed Cotto continually turned his foe keeping him off balance and peppering him with quick shots claiming most of the rounds.

Cotto driven by the suspicion of the possible use of illegal wraps by Margarito in their first meeting began early sharp shooting the Mexican's right eye the same one busted up by Manny Pacquiao November 2010.

Margarito's right eye, the same one that nearly caused the bout to be cancelled was cut and closing at the end of the third round sparking the challengers best round in the fourth. Margarito would turn it up but pressure alone would not break the Puerto Rican champion on this night as he picked his spots battering his Mexican challenger over and over at times leaving him swinging wildly at thin air.

Margarito remained game coming forward smiling the whole bout despite being only able to see out of one eye but not even the begging from his corner could convince one of the games top referees Steve Smoger or the ringside doctor Anthony Curreri to allow even one more round.

Through nine Cotto was the better man sticking to a solid fight plan depriving the late charging Mexican challenger any chance of a repeat performance.

Margarito's eye was bad and it was the reason for the stoppage but for some strange reason I can't help but want to give Manny Pacquiao an assist with all the damage to Margarito's eye he is probably through.

The judges scorecards read 89-82 all across the board at the time of the stoppage leaving Margarito well behind.

As far as the hand wrap scandal, Margarito served his suspension and although there is reason for speculation of the same in the first fight with Cotto I don't lean on it that heavy as if their was even an ounce of evidence Margarito should have been banned for life. Cotto / Margarito I was no Billy Collins / Luis Resto affair as in that case there was no doubt. Here Cotto made the most of an opportunity and made his case but it is all still just speculation.

I believe Cotto was in better shape this time around and probably boxes on for three more rounds but Margarito didn't come in with a busted eye the first time around either, so call it however you may the important question is where does Cotto go from here.

Cotto improves to 37-2, 30Ko's as Margarito dropping three of his last four now with the surgically repaired eye falls to 38-8, 27Ko's and possible retirement as both fighters got paid well with Cotto collecting 5 mill and Margarito 2.5 and a smaller share than Cotto of the pay per view.

There are many big fights out there for Cotto with possible match-ups with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or Saul Alvarez and we will probably hear from Shane Mosley looking for a rematch but its probably the last we hear for the "Tijuana Tornado."

In the nights first co-feature Margarito stablemate Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios who lost his title to the scale and a battle with flu like symptoms had to rally back and stop UK's once beaten John Murray in the 11th round.

Rios took as good as he gave early on with the rugged Murray answering back sharply in the early rounds but the heavier handed Rios battered the game Britt through the middle rounds with crisp uppercuts bloodying Murray's nose, blackening both is eyes while pounding his body causing referee Earl Brown to step in and stop the beating at 2:06 of round eleven.

Now without a title Rios moves to 29-0-1, 21Ko's and probably to the 140lb division while Murray suffering his second straight defeat falls to 31-2, 18Ko's.

In an IBF Welterweight Title Eliminator Philadelphia’s unbeaten Mike Jones passed his toughest test to date dominating Argentina’s constant pressing Sebastian Lujan falling just short of stopping the tough Argentinean at the close of round eleven going onto win a one sided 118-110, 119-109 times two unanimous decision.

Jones remains unbeaten at 26-0, 19Ko's while Lujan a former Margarito opponent and sparring partner falls to 38-6-2, 24Ko's.

In the third co-feature a rematch of their July majority decision draw Danbury, Connecticut's jr. middleweight Delvin Rodriguez blew out Mount Arlington, New Jersey's "Raging Bull" Pawel Wolak, winning a 98-91, 98-92, 100-90 ten round unanimous decision.

Rodriguez looked to strong this time around measuring Wolak with sharp punches making the most of his big right hand ripping the tough Polish fighter over and under. Wolak was hit with over fifteen unanswered punches in the tenth round with many ringside calling for a stoppage.
Rodriguez advances to 26-5-3, 14Ko's as Wolak slips to 29-2-1, 19Ko's.

On the undercard: After a slow start Chicago light heavyweight Mike “The Pride of Notre Dame” Lee dropped and stopped Denver, Colorado’s Allen Medina with big right hands forcing referee Eddie Claudio to call it at 0:55of round four. Lee improves to8-0, 5Ko’s while the light handed Medina losing seven of his last ten falls to 9-20-1, 1Ko.

Passaic, New Jersey light middleweight Glen "Jersey Boy" Tapia blasted out Long Islands tough Mike Ruiz with a thundering right followed by a volley of shots ending with a bout closing left hook at 2:27 of round two leaving Ruiz on the canvas for several minutes. Tapia climbs to 12-0, 6Ko's as Ruiz drops to 15-7, 7Ko's.

Long Beach New York's favorite Irishman, cruiserweight Sean Monaghan dropped Adrian, Michigan's Santos Martinez twice before pulverizing him at 2:56 of round two with a huge right hand. Recording his fourth straight KO Monaghan improves to 11-0, 8Ko's while Martinez suffering his third straight loss, second by KO falls to 2-3, 2Ko's.

Puerto Rican welterweight Samuel Figueroa dropped Newark, New Jersey Latwon Halsey in round one to squeak out a 38-37, 37-38, 39-36 split decision. Figueroa moves to 2-0, 1Ko as Halsey remains winless at 0-1-1.

Mexican bantamweight Hanzel Martinez and San Antonio, Texas Felipe Castaneda banged it out toe to toe for four rounds with Martinez out working Castaneda for a 39-37, 39-37, 38-38 majority decision. Martinez remains unbeaten at 15-0, 12ko's while Castaneda falls to 6-4-1, 3Ko's.

The bout started slowly with what you might call an extended feeling out period until the 38 year old Green opened it up scoring some big shots in round five.

The 30 year old champion Wlodarczyk was up to task stepping it uo himself grabbing the edge in the seventh round rocking the hometown challenger.

John who has been called out by Australia’s IBF World Champion Billy Dib gave “The Kid” a close look at both sides of the 32 year old champion dropping Merdov in the second round only again to see the champion slow down in the second half making the fight a bit tighter.

John now 46-0-2, 22Ko’s unbeaten in forty eight pro bouts with the only two blemishes a draw to Jose Rojas in 2004 and Rocky Juarez 2009 appears to headed for a clash with the slick, speedy hard to hit Dib while Merdov’s winstreak ends at five dropping him to 32-8, 24Ko’s.

Alvarez, too patient, too quick and way too strong took his time building his shots until catching and dropping the former champion with a heavy right hand in the fourth round. Alvarez who was landing with some solid left hooks to Cintron's body took the best "Killer" had to offer again wobbling the challenger with heavy right hands forcing referee Hector Afu to call it at 2:53 of round five.

Following the impressive win, Alvarez ahead on all three judges cards 40-35 improves to 39-0-1, 29Ko's but surprisingly ended the night listening to the chants calling for Chavez. Gary Russell Jr. is Marvelous as Wilder Stays Perfect!

By: Joe Martin

The 22 year old Broner used his speed early to outclass the mismatched Rodriguez then slowing it down in round two Broner allowed the tough but slow Rodriguez to begin to bull his way foward only to open up and chop him down in round three firing quick shots off the ropes highlighted by a ripping uppercut followed by a speedy volley dumping the tough Argentine fighter under the ropes where he remained at 1:43 of round three.

Broner impressive in the win improves to 22-0 18Ko's while Rodriguez stopped for the first time in 38 pro bouts falls to 34-3-1, 18Ko's.

Broner has been impressive but I can't help but wonder why they had to go all the way to Argentina to find a challenger for the vacant title.

In the co-feature: Capitol Heights, Maryland's usually slick southpaw featherweight "Mr." Gary Russell Jr. looked 'marvelous" disposing of Sinaloa, Mexico's Heriberto "Cuate" Ruiz in the first round with a dripping right hook on the button ending it at 2:12 of the opening round.

Maccarinelli who lost his EBU (European) cruiserweight title by way of a seventh round KO September 2010 to Alexander Frenkel returned to action with his previous fire back under the tutelage of trainer Enzo Calzaghe.

The 31 year oldWelshman absent from the ring for fourteen months demonstrated the power that brought him his twenty five previous Ko's shocking Marosi with a sharp left then buckled him to the ropes with a drilling right only to be denied the slaughter when referee Jeff Hinds stepped in and stopped at 1:31 of round one.

Maccarinelli who's all five losses come by KO may have taken his first step back but the 34 year old Marosi never tested the will and chin which was exposed by David Haye, when Ola Afolabi and Dennis Lebedev.

Pacquiao / Marquez Deja Vu All Over Again!!

By: Bill Ethan
November 12th, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada: In another closely contested battle Philippine WBO Welterweight Champion Manny "PACMAN" Pacquiao retained his title with what else, another controversial majority decision over Mexico's "Dinamita" Juan Manuel Marquez.

Watching a fight I'm sure I saw somewhere before Manny Pacquiao may have escaped his arch rival again but many at ringside saw "Dinamita" as the winner and made their displeasure known filling the air with boos, whistles and flying debris.

The patient counter punching Marquez coming in as high as a 13-1 underdog allowed Pacquiao to be the aggressor then drawing the southpaw Filipino star who appeared to be off a beat into his range scoring with counter and lead right hands backed by a solid body attack.

Many of the rounds were tight with Pacquiao the busier fighter and Marquez
answering with sharp counter volleys making the champion pay for all he earned.

Averaging almost four years between the bouts and fighting at almost twenty pounds heavier than their two prior meetings the 38 year old Marquez looked as sharp as he did May 2004 and March 2008.

As close as it was and neither fighter down the champion got the edge but Marquez after making Manny look like anything but Manny may have just let it slip away.

Fighting with the precision, determination and patience of a champion, Marquez believing he was ahead on the cards may have played it too cautious in the championship rounds allowing Pacquiao to pull the fight out in the final round as the scorecards were announced judge Robert Hoyle scoring it even at 114-114 and judges Glenn Trowbridge and Dave Moretti scoring 116-112, 115-113 respectfully for the 32 year old Pacquiao. With Hoyle and Morretti giving the twelfth round to Pacquiao a Marquez twelfth round gets him a the decision.

After the scores were announced a less than jubilant Pacquiao jumped up onto the turnbuckle in search of accolades only to be greeted with boos and whistles. Pacquiao would go on to say he would fight Marquez again anytime and possible Mayweather on May 5th.

Marquez openly upset with the decision left the ring and had to be interviewed in the lockeroom where covered by only a sombrero stated "this was the second robbery and this one was the worst, we won with clearer punches, it's hard when you're fighting your rival and the three judges, too." The dejected Marquez added he was unsure of his future and possible retirement

Pacquiao guaranteed 20 million improves to 54-3-2, 38Ko's while Marquez at 5 million feeling robbed in more ways than one slips to 53-6-1, 39Ko's.

Trout left "no doubt" in what could easily be classified as a mismatch considering the ass kicking LoPorto received. LoPorto was game early coming forward even after getting battered, rocked and dropped.

Tolliver punched himself out early and his best shot became headbutts. Oliveira with cut over his left eye and a swollen nose both from the numerous headbutts picked Tolliver apart sharp combinations.

Tolliver was deducted a point in the fifth for head butting and with Oliveira in control referee Robert Chapa called the bout at 1:31 of the 8th round disqualifying Tolliver who was posing for "Rocky's" cannon fodder hit the talented Brazilian with an illegal punch on the beak.

Kirkland Stops Angulo in Six After Opening Round of the Year!

By: Ian Webb
November 5th, Centro de Cancun, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico: Living up to the hype in a what was promoted as who lands first James "The Mandingo Warrior" Kirkland was forced to pick himself up off the canvas before stopping Mexico's Alfredo "Perro" Angulo in round six.

Angulo entering the WBC Light Middleweight Semi-Final Eliminator had won his last five by Ko and appeared on he way to making it six when he floored Kirkland early but for some strange reason turned southpaw matching his opponent only to punch himself out and get dropped himself by a big "Mandigo" left ending round one.

Kirkland re-united with his long time trainer Anne Wolfe was the better conditioned banger not only surviving his round one knockdown but turning the tables flooring Angulo ending round one in what is a clear contender for round of the year.

Angulo dropped Kirkland with a heavy right hand about thirty seconds into the round. "Perro" switching between orthodox and southpaw then threw over one hundred punches but the well conditioned Kirkland held on to land a thudding left rocking Angulo with about fifteen seconds to go in the round.

The possible round of the year was followed by a change of fortune with Kirkland remaining patient stalking the hurt Angulo going on the break down the rugged Mexican down over the next five rounds finally taking all the fight out of the dog backing "Perro" to the ropes in round six for a two handed battering forcing referee Johnny Callas to step in and stop it at 2:01 of round six.

Claiming the WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight Title Kirkland, now 30-1, 27Ko's is a true banger, he is no sharp shooter and has many defensive flaws but reconciliation with Anne Wolfe should have "The Mandingo Warrior" testing the rest of the top of the division while Angulo, 20-2, 17Ko's regroups and restarts his climb back to the top.

Should WBC Light Middleweight Champion Saul Alvarez the get past Kermit Cintron who beat Angulo May 2009 the 26th of this month a Kirkland / alvarez fight would be very attractive.

In notable bouts on the undercard Peter Quillin stopped Craig McEwan in six and 2008 Olympian heavyweight Deontay Wilder finished Daniel Cota in three.

Bute a southpaw had little difficulty outclassing the usually super aggressive Johnson controlling the space and keeping Johnson on the end of his punches. more surprising than that was "Le Tombeur" won the in fighting.

Both fighters started slow with Bute staying safe behind his jab and Johnson never opening up, almost hiding behind his hands high defense. Bute began to land cleaner punches as the fight wore on and "The Road Warrior" appeared content staying in a almost all defensive mode until the final round which clearly needing a KO the 42 year old fell way short.

The scores were announced 119-109 and 120-108 times two for Bute and with Johnson somehow showing disbelief feeling he won the fight. Whether Johnson was mislead by his corner or temporarily left reality it was Johnson's most disappointing fight in some time.

The 30 year old Mora needing a win to reboot his career started slowly with the rugged 39 year old Flores taking the role of aggressor. Flores a southpaw had Mora fighting mostly in reverse for the first three rounds stalking the former TV star catching him with solid lefts with “The Snake” slipping through the ropes in round one.

Mora slowed his retreat in the fourth beginning a solid body attack mixing in quick crisp combinations. He would continue the flow countering the advancing Flores the next few rounds until sitting down on his punches scoring with clean right hands to the head and body.

Now fighting behind his jab Mora was gradually breaking and slowing Flores down in the sixth eventually stopping “Shibata” in the seventh backing him to the ropes where he sat defenseless for a barrage of punches convincing referee Lou Moret to call it over at 3:00 of round seven.

McGuinness Captures NABA Title Ontario Crushes Quebec

(October 26th) – Hometown hero Logan Cotton McGuinness knocked out former world title challenger Benoit Gaudet in the 11th round last Saturday night in the main event on a provincial rivalry card, pitting Ontario and Quebec fighters against each other in a statement showdown, to capture the vacant North American Boxing Association (“NABA”) super featherweight title at The Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

McGuinness (16-0-1, 7 KOs), presently rated No. 10 by the World Boxing Association (“WBA”) in the lightweight division, relinquished his NABA lightweight crown to fight Gaudet for the lower weight belt.

“This was the biggest fight of my career,” McGuinness said. “He had nearly 200 amateur fights and fought in the Olympics, so he had an experience advantage over me as a professional and amateur. Right from the get-go, I pressured him, cut off the ring, and broke him down. The last three rounds he felt my power, even my jab. I hit him with a good jab and the ropes held him up. He isn’t known as a puncher and I walked through his punches.”

McGuinness, captain of Team Ontario, was the aggressor from the opening bell, forcing the pace against counter-punching Gaudet (24-3, 10 KOs). An accidental head butt in the second round opened a deep cut over McGuinness’ left eye. Logan cut Gaudet over his left eye in the sixth round. In the 11th round, McGuinness’ pressure paid off in dramatic fashion when the Irish-Canadian fighter unloaded a powerful right-left combination that dropped Gaudet, who reached his feet but was unable to continue as the referee halted the match.

“I like fighting as a super featherweight,” Logan added. “I had no trouble making weight and felt stronger. I weighed in at 128, two pounds under. I’m not sure what’s next but I’m ready for anything my promoter, manager and trainer agree to.”

“What a show,” exclaimed promoter Adam Harris (Hennessy Sports). “We hope to get Logan back in the ring in a few months. This impressive performance puts him in the mix for a title shot next year. He wants to continue fighting as a super featherweight. We’ve also been contacted by people who want to showcase him on U.S. television. The sky’s the limit for Logan Cotton McGuinness. Ontario also showed boxing people that Quebec isn’t the only hotbed for talent in Canada. Ontario won all three rivalry fights.”

To watch McGuinness’ knockout victory: (click here)

The co-feature turned out to be a war, as predicted, between unbeaten Columbian welterweight Samuel Vargas (8-0-1, 2 KOs) and outspoken Ahmad Cheikho (6-4-2, 5 KOs), who were representing, respectively, Toronto/Ontario and Montreal/Quebec.

In a toe-to-toe, old-fashioned brawl, Vargas and Cheikho went at it from the start. A well placed shot to the liver by Vargas dropped Cheikho in the first round, but Ahmad caught Vargas in the second round, knocking him to the mat face first for the first time in his career. A bloodied Vargas survived the round and a little later, momentum shifted to his favor. In the fourth, Vargas pinned Cheikho on the ropes, blasting away with left hooks to the body, and Ahmad hit the deck once again. Vargas’ all-out assault continued in the fifth round, in which Cheikho was knocked down during the final seconds. He managed to beat the count but failed to answer the bell for the sixth.

“The card as a whole was one of the most exciting I've been involved with in a long time,” commented International Boxing Hall of Fame nominee Al Bernstein, who called the action live from ringside. “The main event and co-main event were outstanding. The Sam Vargas-Ahmad Cheikho match is a fight of the year candidate. It was a total slugfest and Vargas came back from the brink of disaster to win. Speaking of coming back...Logan McGuinness was being out-boxed by Benoit Gaudet, but he came back to stop Gaudet in the 11th when he needed a KO to win the match. McGuinness won his first big fight at super featherweight and probably found his best weight class."

In the other Ontario-Quebec rivalry bout, Natasha “The Nightmare” Spence       (3-0-1, 2 KOs) made it a clean sweep for Ontario as she won a four round decision (40-36, 40-36, 39-37) versus Lucia Larcinese, of Montreal..

It Takes Two to Tango, Donaire Wanted to Apologize to the Fans!
Garcia Stops Martinez in Four, Monaghan in Five and Full Results!

By: Joe Martin
October 22nd, Madison Square Garden: Looking to expand his fan base to the east coast WBO/WBC Bantamweight Champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire took on former WBO Super Flyweight Champion Argentine Omar Narvaez.

Donaire who catapulted into the spotlight July 2007 with a brutal KO of IBF Flyweight Champion Vic Darchinyan continued his trek to the top ten pound for pound list winning his next eight seven by KO. The eight wins were convincing stopping Luis Maldonado, Moruti Mthalane, Raul Martinez, Manuel Vargas, Hernan Marquez, Volodymyr Sydorenko and Fernando Montiel to win the WBC / WBO Bantamweight title with the only fight going the distance a DeLuca 117-111, 115-113, 116-112 twelve round unanimous decision over Panama’s tough Rafael Concepcion. The build up was in and most boxing notables saw the fight a one sided Ko win by Donaire.

An 8-1 underdog, Narvaez a two time champion with 16 title defenses without a loss in eleven years. The bout on paper appeared to be a competitive despite the 8-1 odds but as we all know to get a fight “it takes two to tango.” Narvaez who hadn’t scored a KO in five bouts usually a pressure fighter lacking a true power punch usually wins with his high volume active attack.

We would see none of that tonight as Donaire was the aggressor attempting to open up his challenger with an assortment of punches to the body and head even resorting to dropping his hands and sticking out his chin could not get Narvaez to open up.

Donaire got to Narvaez briefly in the fourth round with a good right in the fourth only prompting the Argentine former champion to tighten the shell. With Narvaez going into survival mode and Donaire seeming to lose interest Narvaez got his wish hearing the bell sound ending the bout to continuing boos from the disatisfied crowd.

Adding insult to injury when the bout ended Narvaez corner lifted the challenger as if he had just stolen the title. The judges scores were announced 120-108 reflecting Narvaez inactivity but will not show Donaire’s inability to impose his will like Madison Square Garden fans have seen champions do in the past.

After the bout Narvaez stated "He never hurt me, I didn't feel any of the punches. I didn't think he was such a big deal."

Appearing frustrated Donaire declared "I didn't even want to look at him, I was so frustrated, I wanted to apologize to the fans, because the fans didn't deserve this. This was my first time on the East Coast and in Madison Square Garden, and I wanted to give them a better fight."

With the win Donaire improves to 27-1, 18Ko’s as he eyes a match with WBO Jr. Featherweight Champion Jorge Arce, 58-6-1, 44Ko’s. Another potential match-up is WBC Super Bantamweight titlist Toshiaki Nishioka, 39-4-3, 24Ko’s. Suffering his first loss Narvaez slips to 35-1-2, 19Ko’s.

In the co-feature: 23 year old unbeaten featherweight Miguel Angel Garcia kept his zero and extended his KO streak to five stopping Mexico’s Juan Carlos Martinez in four.

Garcia started slow with Martinez landing left cleanly but Garcia who appeared to be sizing up his opponent appears was scoring the heavier shots.

In round two Garcia with swelling beginning over his left eye would continue to eat Martinez jab but was again landing with the heavier punches.

Finding his range in the third Garcia dumps Martinez with a solid hook but remains patient stalking the stunned Mexican.

In round four Garcia beats a Martinez right with a thumping left flooring Martinez again. Martinez making it upright beats the count allowing Garcia to go on the attack scoring with his left at will mixing in heavy rights returning Martinez to the canvas. Martinez would again get vertical only to become the recipient of a volley of Garcia power shots finally convincing the referee to halt the bout at 2:40 of round four.

Retaining his NABF title with the win Garcia advances to 27-0, 23Ko’s while Martinez fals to 19-13, 7Ko’s.

On the undercard: Golden Boy Promotions Canadian jr middleweight prospect Mikael Zewski continued his unbeaten streak scoring his second KO in as many fights blitzing Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Keuntray Henson dropping him once before finishing the bout with a crisp left hook convincing referee Gary Rosato to call it at 1:27 of round one. Zewski improves to 11-0, 7Ko’s as Henson falls to 4-4, 1Ko.

Long Beach, Long Island undefeated light heavyweight Seanie Monaghan scored his third straight KO win over Youngstown, Ohio’s Anthony Pietantonio. The fan favorite Monaghan appearing patient took his time to find his openings banging Pietantonio with heavy hooks and thumping right hands. As the fight progressed Monaghan landing the cleaner harder shots broke Pietantonio down backing him to the ropes in round five opening up with both hands forcing referee Eddie Claudio to stop the beating at 2:51 of round five. Monaghan improves to 10-0, 7Ko’s returning Pietantonio to Ohio at 7-8, 5Ko’s.

Puerto Rican unbeaten super flyweight Jonathan “La Bomba” Gonzalez moved and boxed himself to a 59-54, 60-53 times two unanimous decision over New Rochelle, New York’s pressing Jose “Chili” Rivera.

In a six round advanced sparring session Plainview, New York’s Tommy “The Razor” Rainone won a 60-54, 59-55, 58-56 one sided sleeper over Denver, Colorado’s Brad Jackson. Rainone wins his third straight improving to 16-4, 4Ko’s as Jackson falls to13-7-1, 7Ko’s.

Freeport, Long Island lightweight Mike “Lefty” Brooks won his sixth straight against no losses with his patented body attack shutting out Laredo, Texas Eddie Ramirez. The aggressive brooks ripped to Ramirez body from the opening bell never allowing the visiting Texan to match his work rate or power earning a 40-36 times three unanimous decision. Brook’s climbs to 6-0, 1Ko while Ramirez falls to 6-10-1, 3Ko’s.

Dix Hill, Long Island’s, heavy handed Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin bounced Miami, Florida’s Jose Segura Torres off the canvas once in round one and twice in round two forcing referee Eddie Claudio to stop the beat down at 2:52 of round two. Seldin recording his second KO moves to 4-0, 2Ko’s as Torres drops to 1-3-1, 1Ko.

In a bout that kept referee Paul Thomas busy with Rossi a southpaw being deducted a point in round three and Huck losing two points in round four for dropping Rossi with a late punch after the bell.

Despite the point deductions Huck would legally drop Rossi in round three and twice in round five the latter with a drilling body shot as the round closed.

Round six would see Huck showing Rossi who the “Käpt'n” was dropping him for good with a devastating right hand prompting Rossi being carried from the ring on a stretcher.

Huck retains his title moving to 34-1, 25Ko’s. Rossi unbeaten in his last seventeen drops to 17-3-1,11Ko’s. (click here for more fight reports)

McGuinness Stops Gaudet with Come from Behind KO!

By: Rich Neary
October 22nd, Hershey Centre, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada: In the main event of a Hennessy Sports Canada, Interbox Promotion “The Battle for Ontario” 24 year old Logan McGuinness claimed the vacant NABA Super Featherweight Title with an eleventh round TKO of fellow Canadian Benoit Gaudet.

McGuinness starting slow was unable to close the distance early finding himself chasing the sticking and moving Gaudet. The 31 year old Gaudet would dominate the first five rounds until conditioning appeared to become a factor.

Whether it was desperation being well behind on the scorecards McGuinness fighting his first bout under new trainer Dwight Fraser picked it up in the eighth round going onto end it with a big right left combination at 1:56 of round eleven.

McGuinness claiming the vacant NABA Super Featherweight Title the Orangsville fighter keeps his zero moving to 16-0-1, 8Ko’s while Gaudet lets one slip dropping to 24-3, 10Ko’s.

“Believe It or Not” Hopkins / Dawson an Official Mess! Antonio DeMarco with a Bloody Win Over Linares, Danny Garcia and Paulie Malignaggi Impress, Freddie Hernandez Upsets Collazzo, Dewy Bozella Retires Unbeaten and Full Card Results!

By: Phil Kane
October 15th, Staples Center, Los Angeles, California: After a pretty exciting undercard the Golden Boy Gary Shaw Promotion “Believe It or Not” Hopkins / Dawson boxing did it again pulling down it’s trunks and showing its ass. Just weeks after the Ortiz / Mayweather fiasco and many fans voicing their disappointment with officiating and scoring boxing not only did it again but made it a Pay Per View.

With the scent of stink still in the aur of the Abner Mares / Joseph Agbeko and the Ortiz / Mayweather officiating debacles boxing would see it all over again.

In the first defense of his WBC Light Heavyweight Title 46 year old Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins finally found himself facing 29 year old “Bad” Chad Dawson only to “fall” victim to a sample of his own tactics. After winning the first round in his usual slow paced manner Hopkins leaning over Dawson’s back following a long right hand Dawson clearly lifted the”Executioner” off his feet shouldering him to the canvas in a style Eagles coach Andy Reid would be proud of. Hopkins would hit the canvas on his left side elbow first appearing to drive it into his shoulder.

Hopkins would lay there appearing in pain complaining of a separated shoulder while referee Pat Russell made the call the action was not a foul and that Hopkins could not continue therefore awarding Dawson a 2nd round TKO. If I didn’t see myself I wouldn’t believe it but it is boxing and after all a Hopkins bout.

To his own dismay Hopkins may have fell foul to his own tricks having laid low for a rest in the 1999 Antwon Echols bout when he was hit on a break and in 1999against Joe Calzaghe “B-Hop” laid down for a two minute rest following a Calzaghe low blow.

There is no way to know if Hopkins was truly hurt shoulders are fragile and it’s almost irrelevant because it wasn’t a boxing action that caused the stoppage Dawson picked Hopkins up then shouldered him to the canvas. If Hopkins couldn’t continue it should by all reason be a no contest.

After the confusion Hopkins, 52-6-2, 32Ko’s stated: "They want me out of boxing, and this is one way to do it," Hopkins said. "Chad Dawson came in the ring tonight, and he just wanted to rough me up with dirty tactics. He wanted to get me out of there, and that was the only way he could."

Dawson, 31-1, 18Ko’s taking the WBC Light Heavyweight Title with the toss stated: "I knew he didn't want the fight," Dawson said. "He jumped on me and was pulling me down, so I pushed him off with the shoulder," Dawson said. "B-Hop disappointed a lot of fans. I was looking forward to a good fight. I trained eight weeks for this. ... Yes, he was faking. This is a fight I wanted for three years, and Bernard obviously didn't want the fight."

Dawson said there would be no rematch and he looks to a rematch with Jean Pascal to who he lost an eleven round technical decision August 2010.

Many question the validity of the Hopkins / Dawson card being a legitimate PPV card and with the economy being the way it is I can’t help but feel for those who question Hopkins ability to continue or the fact that many of boxing’s biggest bouts are ending in WWF fashion, ala Paul Williams / Kerit Cintron, Ortiz / Mayweather and now Hopkins / Dawson.

With less than two rounds in the books Dawson appeared well prepared mentally and physically by John Scully who now are the only ones able to beat “The Executioner” by KO.

I do expect Golden Boy to exert their full influence to get the call changed as they have the video and the rule book on their side.

In the first co-feature Mexico’s 25 year old southpaw Antonio DeMarco recorded his third straight victory since being stopped by the late Edwin Valero February 2010 with a bloody come from behind eleventh round stoppage of Freddie Roach trained Venezuelan Jorge Linares.

Linares would control the first four rounds with his superior hands and foot speed but the rugged DeMarco would begin to turn it around with big left hands and right hooks in round four.

Linares cut on the bridge of his nose in round six DeMarco was finding his range landing the cleaner heavier punches.

In round eight Linares was moving his hands well but suffered a cut over his right eye. DeMarco who appeared fresh began to sit on his punches. Despite being out worked DeMarco pressed on banging away catching Linares clean in round eleven and with the blood making it look worse than it may have been referee Raul Caiz Sr. looking to protect the fighter stepped in and stopped it at 2:32 of round eleven.
Claiming the vacant WBC Lightweight Title with the stoppage DeMarco improves to 26-2-1, 19Ko’s. Linares who claimed to have had his nose broke with a head butt falls to 31-2, 20Ko’s.

In the second co-feature Philly light welterweight Danny “Swift” Garcia remained unbeaten in his biggest step up fight scoring a controversial split decision over former WBO Champion Kendall “Rated R” Holt. The fight only controversial in the sense that two judges saw it 117-111 for Garcia like most ringside and the third somehow scored it 115-113 Holt.

Garcia a long time golden Boy prospect started slowly respecting the heavy handed Holt but began to turn the tide in the third with his patented body attack.

Holt would pick up the pressure in round five but the patient Garcia stuck to his fight plan outworking Holt to close round six and get back in his flow. Garcia would resume his body attack and scoring with his looping right then showed a veteran edge in round eight after an accidental clash of heads Garcia responded to Holts offer of a touch of gloves with a quick combination.

Holt was looking for the big shot while the young prospect remained poised outworking the veteran to win a convincing decision despite judge Wayne Hedgepeth score’s 115-113 for Holt.

Claiming the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Light Welterweight Title and #2 WBC and IBF Light Welterweight Eliminator spot Garcia advances to 22-0, 14Ko’s while Holt drops to 27-5, 15Ko’s.

In other action: Former Light Welterweight Champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi won his third straight bout moving up to welterweight after dropping a twelve round decision to Amir Khan May 2010 with an impressive boxing exhibition over Mexico’s tough Orlando Lora.

Lora would win the opening round then the light but quick handed “Magic Man” had too much speed hand and foot consistently beating Lora to the punch with a piston jab averaging fifty a round. Despite being well ahead on the score cards Malignaggi would add his right hand and stand and trade to close the later rounds leaving no doubt in his jab filled 99-91, 100-90, 98-92 ten round victory. The “Magic Man” improved to 30-4, 6Ko’s while Lora slips to 28-2-1, 19Ko’s.

Mexican heavy handed welterweight Freddy “The Rail” Hernandez rebounded from his first round KO loss to Andre Berto dropping slick southpaw former WBA Champion Luis Collazzo with a body shot in round eight on the way to a 96-93 times three unanimous decision.

Hernandez back on the winning track improved to 30-2, 20Ko’s while Collazzo entering off back to back KO wins falls to 31-5, 16Ko’s.

Niagara Falls, New York welterweight Nick “Hands of Gold” Casal won his fourth straight, third by Ko stopping Newark, New Jersey’s previously unbeaten “Slick” Michael Anderson in round three.

Casal landing the sharper punches throughout dropped Anderson in the third with an uplifting right then repeated the act with a volley of shots then moving firing with both hands referee Rosales had seen enough calling it at 2:51 of round three. Casal’s moves to 22-4-1, 16Ko’s while Anderson suffering his first defeat drops to 11-1-1, 9Ko’s.

In a dramatic four rounder Dewey “Radar” Bozella fulfilled a life time dream of competing as a professional fighter after spending 26 years in New York State Prison Sing Sing for a crime he did not commit.

The 52 year old Bozella wrongfully convicted of murdering 92 year old Emma Crapser in 1983, Bozella declined freedom after ten years refusing to sign an admission of guilt. Bozella remained incarcerated another sixteen years earning a bachelors degree and doing some boxing until ultimately having his conviction overturned 2009.

Bozella would face 30 year old heavyweight Larry Hopkins no relation to Benard surviving a big shot in round one to out last, out bang and out enjoy himself winning a 39-36, 38-37 and 38-36. Bozella would force Hopkins to spit out his mouthpiece several times then finished the night with a big shot at the bell bringing the crowd to their feet.

Bozella retiring undefeated immediately after the bout stated "I'm going to concentrate on the Dewey Bozella Foundation, which really means opening a gym in my town." Bozella looks to open a gym in Newburgh New York.

In a battle of unbeaten middleweights Palmdale, California‘s DonYil Livingston remained kept his zero with a 59-55, 58-56 times two unanimous decision over Austin Texas perfect Kurtiss Colvin. Livingston improved to 6-0-1, 3Ko’s while Colvin previously unbeaten winning all six by KO dips to 6-1, 5Ko’s.

In jr. featherweight action Fairfield, California’s Manuel Avila used his speed to outscore and floor Mexico’s Davis Reyes in round three on the way to a 38-37, 39-35, 39-36 unanimous decision. Avila keeps his zero at 6-0, 2Ko’s while Reyes falls to 3-5, 1Ko’s.
