Golden Boy Fight Night Club Star Ronny Rios
Back in Action February 4th in Arizona!

(January 22nd) Golden Boy Promotions hot prospect and Nokia Fight Night Club star super featherweight Ronny Rios will taking on Coon Rapids, Minnesota's Jeremy McLaurin, 9-2, 5Ko's in a scheduled eight rounder February 4th at The Phoenix Club in Anaheim, California.

At twenty two years old Rios, 16-0, 7Ko's from Santa Ana, California comes from a solid amateur background winning the National Golden Glove Championships at bantamweight 2007 and US Championships 2007-2008.

Joining Rios will be fellow Fight Night Club stars with Derrick Wilson, 9-2-2, 3Ko's facing Salinas, California's Alejandro Perez, 15-3, 10Ko's and light welterweight Luis Mora, 1-0-1 meeting Ricardo Malfavon, 2-7-1, 2Ko's. Also scheduled is super bantamweight Julian Ramirez in his pro debut vs Ludwin Mondragon, 0-5 and super featherweight Jose Manuel Sanchez, 6-2, 3Ko's against Manuel Sarabia, 16-34-10, 10Ko's. THe card will be broadcast live on Telefutura beginning at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

Prospects Not Frightened, Win Big at “Fright Night Club”

October 27th, Club Nokia, LA Live: In another night of hot prospect boxing promoted as “Fright Night” Club” by Golden Boy and AEG in another edition of its cutting edge presentation of professional boxing in a club atmosphere you couldn’t find a scared face anywhere.

In the main event former Venezuelan Olympian j. middleweight Alfonso Blanco now fighting out of Oxnard, California was the aggressor from the start dominating Hemet, California’s Leshon Sims cutting him over the right eye with a left hook in round one. Neither fighter was down or hurt but Blanco would continue his dominance as the valiant Sims would remain game only fall short on the scorecards which were read 60-54 times three all for Blanco. Blanco improved to 7-0, 2Ko’s as Sims falls to 5-10, 3Ko’s.

In the co-feature LA”s unbeaten jr. middleweight Ernesto Ocon used his superior skills to outclass Santa Ana’s Ricardo Malfavon over six. Ocon repeatedly used his superior quickness to land in combination mixing it up and down for a 60-54 times three unanimous decision. Ocon advances to 5-0, 2Ko’s while Malfavon drops to 1-6-1, 1Ko.

In a match of debuting super featherweights Montebello California’s Santiago Guevar would be treated to his first win over Garden Grove’s Naphi Mohammed. Guevar would trick the shorter Mohammed all night keeping him at the end of his punches earning a one sided 40-36 times three unanimous decision.

In another match-up of pro debuts East LA’s Xavier Montelongo put on a boxing show out working and out scoring Santa Ana’s Jose Garcia over four for a shutout 40-36 times three unanimous decision.

Maywood, California welterweight Luis Mora finished the night in true Halloween fashion scoring a KO in his first pro bout stopping Lindsay, California’s Stephen Rubalcava at 2:08 of round one dropping the 32 year old Rubalcava to 0-6 having been KO’ed four times.

Garcia Over Serrano at “Fight Night Cub” in LA!

In the main event of Golden Boy Promotion’s popular “Fight Night Club’s” August 25th edition at LA Live’s Club Nokia Phoenix, Arizona’s Juan Garcia and Huntington Park, California’s Hector “Teco” Serrano engaged in a hard fought early career defining gateway six rounder as both fighters were coming I off losing efforts.

After an even start Garcia rocked Serrano in round two but the game Serrano wouldn’t go easy opening a two handed body attack but Garcia sensing the urgency after three straight defeats finished hard rocking Serrano in the sixth claiming the final round and a 58-56 times two 57-57 majority decision to stay alive at 15-3, 5Ko’s leaving Serrano to regroup after dropping his third straight falling to 13-3, 5Ko’s.

In the co-feature East LA’s 21year old lightweight Ramon Valadez won a six round unanimous decision over Mexico’s rough and ready Noe Lopez Jr. Valadez unbeaten in his last eight floored Lopez with a snapping right in round one to grab an early lead but always game Lopez battled back in round two rocking Valadez with a heavy left. Valadez would go on to out work Lopez through the meat of the bout capturing a 59-54 times three unanimous decision. Valadez improved to 9-1, 5Ko’s while Lopez remains below .500 at 7-10, 4Ko’s.

Santa Ana southpaw jr. lightweight Jose Sanchez bounced the pro debuting Ricardo Garcia off the deck twice in the second round ending the action with a solid two punch combo forcing referee Lou Moret to call it at 1:11 of round two. Sanchez advances to 5-2, 2ko’s while Garcia remains in search of his first pro win at 0-1.

Valadez and Kavanagh Win Leading GBP’s
Latest Edition of Fight Night Club

By: Edwin Gonzalez                                                                                         (June 23rd) Club Nokia, LA Live, Los Angeles, California: In the main event of Golden Boy Promotions latest edition of “Fight Night Club” East LA lightweight Ramon Valadez stopped Wilmington, California’s Ramon Flores in the third round.

The bout a two way slugfest started with Flores scoring the first big shot rocking Valadez in the second but the tough East LA fighter held on turning the tide in the third dropping Flores with a heavy looping right. Flores beat the count and went back to war but was floored again by another clean right forcing referee Jerry Cantu to call it at 2:59 of round three of the scheduled six rounder. Valadez improved to 9-1, 5Ko’s while Flores now winless in his last ten falls to to 3-13-2, 3Ko’s.

In the co-feature LA’s relocated “Irishman” lightweight Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh remained unbeaten stopping Georgia’s John Willoughby in the third round. Kavanagh proved to be more than a “Nuisance” for Willoughby taking it to the durable Georgian from the opening bell. Kavanagh scoring at will ended the action with a clean solid combination in round three convincing referee Jerry Cantu to call it at 2:21 of round three. Kavanagh advances to 7-0, 3Ko’s while Willoughby returns to the red column losing his five of his last six dropping to 3-8, 2Ko’s.

In jr. lightweight action Santa Ana, California’s Jose Sanchez would out last LA’s Luis Martinez over four to grab a 40-36, 39-37 times two unanimous decision. Sanchez improves to 4-2, 1Ko while Martinez drops to 2-5-1.

Montebello, California super bantamweight David Reyes won his pro debut out working and out scoring Bakersfield’s Cain Garcia over four winning a 40-36 times three unanimous decision leaving Garcia winless at 0-3.

Las Vegas middleweight Juan Pablo Montes De Oca recorded his first win in his last ten bouts stopping Anaheim’s Roderick “Nino” Grajeda with a driving right hand forcing referee Wayne Hedpepeth to halt the bout at 0:44 of round one of their scheduled four rounder. Montes De Oca gets his wins to double digits at 10-19-2, 7Ko’s while Grajeda evens out at 6-6-2, 3Ko’s.

Gomez Wins Big at “Fight Night Club”

(April 28th) In the main event of Golden Boy Promotions hot boxing club show at LA Live’s Club Nokia unbeaten jr. welterweight Frankie “The Pitbull” Gomez did get to showcase all his skills, just enough to blow out Vancouver, Washington’s Jason Davis with a heavy right earning Davis a full referee Raul Caiz, Sr. count at 0:25 of round one of the scheduled six rounder. Gomez remains umbeaten at 9-0, 7Ko’s while Davis winless in his last nine collapses to 11-9-1, 3Ko’s.

21 year old East LA lightweight Ramon Valadez set up Irvington, New Jersey’s Rafael Lora for clean counters 60-54, 60-54, 59-55 unanimous decision to advance to 8-1, 4 KO’s while Lora drops his fifth straight diving to 11-5, 5Ko’s.

Albuquerque, New Mexico’s 19 year old southpaw jr. welterweight Fidel Maldonado Jr. took just over a minute to drop and dispose off Puerto Rico’s Jorge Cordero with a heavy left hand convincing referee Raul Caiz, Sr. that the reluctant Cordero had seen enough at 1: 03 of round one of the scheduled six rounder. Maldonado improves to 10-0, 9Ko’s while Cordero suffering his seventh straight defeat falls to 4-0, 7, 4Ko’s.

Los Angeles southpaw welterweight Ernesto Ocon measured San Antonio, Texas Miguel Pizarro through two rounds before rocking Pizarro scoring with a clean left then adding a volley of unanswered shots dropping Pizarro for a full referee Jack Reiss count at 0:58 of round three. Ocon advances to 3-0, 2Ko’s while Pizarro falls to 1-2.

The show and atmosphere were again great but Gomez and Maldonado have to stiffen the competition.

  Vargas, Samir Debut! and Kavanagh All Victorious in 2011 “Fight Night Club”

(February 24th) Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: In another entertaining night combining boxing and the west coast’s lively social atmosphere unbeaten welterweight Jesse Vargas won a very tight closely contested eight round unanimous decision over last minute replacement Mexican tough guy Cristian “Filoso” Favela in the main event of “Fight Night Clubs” 2011 debut.

Vargas used his superior skills and speed to out boxed the well conditioned and aggressive Favela who pushed the action but was anything but “razor sharp.” After the judges scores were announced 79-73, 78-74, 77-75 for Vargas it was evident many of fans joined the underdogs camp but Vargas got what he came for, his 14th victory and some good experience. Vargas rolls on at 14-0, 7Ko’s while Favela’s workman like performance only drops him to 28-32-7, 18Ko’s.

Kenny Adams heavy handed unbeaten middleweight Bastie Samir remained perfect stopping Kent, Washington’s Eddie Hunter in the third round of their scheduled six rounder. Hunter made it competitive early but Samirs left hook was the difference hurting Hunter in the third frorcing referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the action at 0:51 of round three. Samir advances to 10-0, 10Ko’s while Hunter drops to 4-6-2, 2Ko’s.

Irish lightweight Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh kept his zero winning a six round unanimous decision over Mexico’s Ramon Flores. Flores had his chance in the opening round rocking Kavanagh with a wild looping right hand but it turned out to only be a “nuisance” as the skilled Irishman countered the wild swinging Mexican for the remainder of the bout scoring with heavy hooks and straight rights shutting Flores out 60-54 times three. Kavanagh improves to 5-0, 2Ko’s while Flores, winless in his last seven drops to 3-11-2, 3Ko’s.

Martin and Rios Win Fifth Bout in 2010

December 17th Four Points Sheraton in San Diego, California: San Diego-based jr featherweight Christopher “S.D. Kid” Martin remained unbeaten winning his fifth bout of 2010. The cool calm Martin was in control throughout the bout using a solid jab to set up clean combinations ripping off four punch volleys at times keeping Colombian hard-hitting Colombian Yogli Herrera in check.

Mixing in heavy rights and ripping double hooks Martin  scored a 78-74, 80-72 times two unanimous decision advancing the hometown fighter to 21-0, 6Ko’s. Herrera drops to 22-14, 15Ko’s not having won a bout since April 2008, eleven straight losses.

               

Santa Anna California’s 20 year old super featherweight Ronny Rios remained unbeaten winning his fifth bout in 2010 an eight-round decision win over Mexico City ‘s tough veteran 31 year old Adolfo "El Terror" Landeros.

In the eight round action packed bout Rios put in a full nights work battling the tough Landeros. Rios quicker hands allowed him to mix it up body Landeros having his moments but Rios tucked in behind a tight defense answered most of “El Terrors” attacks with clean hard counter shots.

          

The rounds were full and the crowd certainly got their share of action throughout the ten rounds with the two trading shots as the final bell sound. Rios scored well with a clean jab and straight rights mixing in a concentrated body attack including landed jabs, rights and left hooks with the occasional uppercut being Langeros best shot.

Rios overall work earned him a 80-72 times three unanimous decision advancing The Fight Night Club “ star to 13-0, 6Ko’s with Landeros suffering his seventh straight loss dropping to 20-17-1, 9Ko’s.

  “Fight Night Club” Sees Molina and Redkach Remain Unbeaten

November 19th, Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: In the final edition of Golden Boy Promotions 2010 enormously popular “Fight Night Club” Rosemead, California’s unbeaten lightweight Carlos Molina scoring his fourteenth straight victory over David Rodela replacement Salinas, Puerto Rico’s John Figueroa in the evenings main event.

                              

The battle of counter punchers started with both fighters waiting for the other to lead. Molina adjusted first rocking the chiseled chinned Figueroa several times winning a 78-74, 79-73, 79-72 eight round unanimous decision. Molina advances to 14-0, 7Ko’s while Figueroa dipped below the .500 mark to 7-8-3, 3Ko’s.

In the semi main event 24 year old Ukrainian junior welterweight Ivan Redkach survived an heavy right from San Fernando, California’s Carlos Hernandez in round one then was deducted a point for a low blow in round two but went on to land some clean uppercuts as Hernandez repeatedly punched on the breaks forcing referee Jose Cobian call a DQ at 1:28 of round three of their scheduled six rounder. Redkach moves to 5-0, 4Ko’s while the light punching Hernandez falls to 3-4-2.

Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Jr welterweight Fidel Maldonado Jr. was forced to put in a full nights work after trading first round knockdowns with Fairfield, California’s Luis Sanchez. Sanchez used his longer reach not allowing Maldonado to shorten his shots but it was Maldonado’s superior speed that grabbed him the 39-36, 39-37 times two unanimous decision and climb to 6-0, 5Ko’s leaving Sanchez at 1-4.

East LA light welterweight Ramon Valadez won a 40-36 times three shutout unanimous decision over Wilmington’s Ramon Flores to move to 3-1, 1Ko while Flores dropping his fifth straight dives to 3-9-1, 3Ko’s.

Santa Ana welterweight Sal Rios battled East LA’s Gerardo Melendrez over four earning a closely contested 38-37, 38-37 Rios 38-37 Melendrez split decision. Rios moves to 2-1, 1Ko as Melendrez still works for his first win falling to 0-2-1.

Fairfield’s Manuel Avila was sharper and stronger in beating gritty Alexis Hernandez of Las Vegas by unanimous decision. Both fighters made their pro debut. Avila got the decision 40-36 on all three cards.

In amateur action Montebello’s flyweight Seniesa Estrada out pointed Fresno’s Shanne Ruelas, Duarte’s lightweight Luis Seldano out scored Maywood’s Luis Bello and Santa Ana’s lightweight Robert Galvan decisioned Long Beach’s Julian Cruz.

Not Scared Russell Dominates at Halloween Fright Night Club!

October 28th Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: There was no scare in the air during the Halloween edition of Golden Boy Promotions “Fright Night Club” at LA’s hottest live club for 22 year old Capitol Heights, Maryland 's Gary Russell Jr. Russell completely dominated Mission, Texas featherweight Guadalupe DeLeon over six rounds. Russell a former Olympian used his solid amateur platform to mix in some quick movement hand and foot continually beating DeLeon to the punch. Russell’s southpaw stance appeared to have the game DeLeon of balance never being able to get his inside attack on track.

By the third round it was evident it would be all Russell the only question being would DeLeon hear the final bell. Russell was beginning to land heavier shots closing the third round with a ripping right hook rocking DeLeon who held on to finish the round.

Russell continued to control the action as DeLeon would finish trying to avoid Russell’s heavy shots. Russell’s six round 60-54 times three shutout advanced him to 13-0, 9Ko’s while DeLeon now 8-12, 4Ko’s who has served as a trial horse for other Golden Boy prospects Ronnie Rios and Charles Huerta dropped his third straight since upsetting prospect Derrick Wilson December 2009.

In other bouts Yakubu “Black Mamba” Aminu returned to action after a two year layoff following a seventh round TKO loss to UK’s Ricky Burns November 2008. The LA Jr. lightweight won his return bout with a six round decision over Mexico’s malleable Noe “El Chamaco” Lopez. Aminu showing some ring rust controlled the action for most of the bout with Lopez southpaw stance allowing Lopez to fight in spurts and avoid “Black Mamba’s” heavier shots. The judges scores were announced 60-54, 60-54, and 59-55 all for Aminu. “Black Mamba” moves to 17-2-1, 16Ko’s his only other defeat a majority decision loss to Ali Funeka in 2007. Lopez drops his third of his last four evening out at 6-6, 4Ko’s.

Maldanado Jr. opened and closed fast firing with both hands blitzing Willoughby with a volley of punches forcing referee Raul Caiz to call it a night at 2:35of round one. Maldanado Jr. moves to 5-0, 5Ko’s while Willoughby drops his third in a row sliding to 2-6,1ko.

In a pairing of debuting light heavyweights Glendale, Arizona’s Trevor McCumby finished Phoenix, Arizona’s Sharieff Hayes bid for his first win with a series of big right hands forcing referee David Mendoza to stop the bout at 1:20 of the third round of their scheduled four rounder.

Flint, Michigan super middleweight Dion Savage remained unbeaten dropping and stopped Kent, Washington’s Eddie Hunter with a heavy left hook at 1:05 of the third round of thier scheduled six rounder to advance to 10-0, 6Ko’s leaving Hunter, 3-5-2, 1Ko.

East LA welterweight Ramon Valadez outworked and outscored Knoxville, Tennessee opponent Aaron Anderson 40-35 times three for his third win in four bouts giving Anderson his ninth loss in ten bouts.

In an amateur bout Pomona, California’s Shane Mosley Jr. the son of five time world champion “Sugar” Shane was outpointed by Carson, California’s Ivan Lazaro in his Club Nokia debut. Throwing mostly single shots Mosley Jr. was beaten to the punch on most occasions and simply outworked with Lazaro playing the role of the aggressor.

It’s a Quick Night’s Work at “Fight Club for Vargas, Martinez and Valdez, Kavanagh Looks Sharp Over Four!

Thursday, September 30th, Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: In the main event of Golden Boy Promotions hottest new fight promotion “Fight Night Club” 21 year old Las Vegas welterweight Jessie Vargas took about a half a round to take out 39 year old Pablo “El Hueso” Sarmiento rocking him with a stiff jab the scoring with a heavy volley of power shots forcing referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop it at 1:31 0f the opening round. Vargas advances to 12-0, 7Ko’s while Sarmiento falls to 34-14-2, 16Ko’s.

Freddie Roach trained “Irishman” Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh remained unbeaten winning a one sided shutout unanimous decision over Santa Ana, California’s winless Ricardo Malfavon. Kavanagh fighting behind a tight defense mixed it up well scoring to the body and head with his best shots being classified as a little more than a “Nuisance” to the tough Malfavon. Kavanagh working without Roach who is in the Phillipines with Manny Pacquiao earned a 40-36 times three unanimous decision moving to 3-0, 1Ko while Malfavon who was stopped by Frankie Gomez his last time out remains winless at 0-3.

Unbeaten Las Vegas welterweight Anthony Martinez crumpled Saint Paul, Minnesota’s Ronnie Peterson with a ripping left hook to the body at 0:52 of round one forcing Peterson to take a knee where he was counted out by referee Wayne Hedgpeth advancing Martinez to 6-0, 5Ko’s leaving Peterson who either wins or loses by KO 3-4, 3Ko’s.

Lancaster, California southpaw welterweight Marcus Robinson punched and grabbed winning his pro debut over Santa Ana, California’s Salvador Rios the older brother of GBP prospect Ronny Rios in a closely contested 39-37, 39-37, 37-39 split decision. Rios evens out at 1-1, 1Ko.

East LA’s light welterweight Ramon Valadez got back on the winning track dropping San Fernando, California’s Carlos Hernandez twice prompting referee Wayne Hedgpeth to stop the action at 2:51 of round one advancing Valdez to 2-1, 1Ko while Hernandez evens out at 3-3-2.

Ronnie Rios and “Fight Night Club” Do It Again!!!

August 26th, Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: In the main event of another successful edition of the popular Golden Boy “Fight Night Club” series Santa Ana, California’s and Golden Boy hot prospect featherweight Ronny Rios remained unbeaten stopping southpaw Miami, Florida’s Leivi Brea. Rios and Brea battled over the first two rounds with Rios being deducted a point for a low blow. Brea used the point deduction as motivation and appeared to take control in the third while Rios appeared content to go to Brea’s body.

In the fourth Rios dropped Brea with a driving right hand to the body putting Brea on a knee for an eight. When the action resumed Rios hit replay and another right hand to the body put Brea on a knee again where he remained for the count complaining of a low blow forcing referee Jose Cobian to call it at 2:59 of round four. Rios advances to 12-0, 6Ko’s while Brea drops to 18-9-3, 10Ko’s.

In the semi main attraction San Diego welterweight Antonio “Simple Man" Orozco kept it simple combining speed and some lateral movement to out work and out point Dallas, Texas Humberto Tapia. The judges scores were read 60-54 times three keeping Orozco unbeaten at 8-0, 5Ko’s while Tapia evens out at 15-15-1, 8Ko’s.

In a pier one style brawl LA jr welterweight Jonathan “Johnny” Bobadilla remained composed countering the wild swinging Mexican Juan Alfonso Figueroa. The fight, like most brawls involved some holding, low blows, an accidental clash of heads leaving Figueroa cut over his right eye. “Johnny” landed the more telling shots and to add to the rugged Mexican’s pain the judges scores were announced 39-36, 39-36, 38-37 Bobadilla. The light punching Bobadilla moves to 5-3, 0Ko’s while Figueroa slides to 6-8-1, 3Ko’s.

Ghana middleweight Bastie Samir remained perfect trading with Hesperia, California’s Jacob Alvarez for about two minutes until Samir landed two clean rights dumping Alvarez for the required eight count but referee Raul Caiz, Sr. had seen enough calling it at 2:37 of round one. Samir climbs to 4-0, 4ko’s while Alvarez remains winless at 0-2.

Ronnie Rios older brother welterweight Salvador Rios won his pro debut clubbbing Lindsay, California’s Stephen Rubalcava with both hands for most of two rounds punctuating the fight knocking Rubalcava silly and his mouthpiece flying prompting referee Jose Cobian to halt the bout at 1:35 of round two.

East LA’s welterweight Armando Dorantes took 66 seconds to dispose of Escondido, California’s Sergio De Le Torre dropping him twice both times with left hooks. The first doing the job landing high on the head the second landing on the button forcing referee Raul Caiz, Sr. to stop the damage at 1:06 of round one. Dorantes moves to 8-2, 2Ko’s while De La Torre falls 11-15-3, 1Ko.

Golden Boy Promotions “Fight Night Club” does it again providing solid boxing action in an entertaining club atmosphere displaying some of boxing’s hottest prospects together with some of the areas top local talent.

Gary Russell Jr. Explodes on Pastrada
and Full Results Fight Night Club!

Live’s Club Nokia, Los Angeles, CA: In another edition of Golden Boy Promotions “Fight Night Club” unbeaten Capitol Heights, Maryland southpaw super featherweight Gary Russell Jr. began sizing up his opponent Mauricio “Indio Boy” Pastrana from the opening bell and didn’t take much time for the 2008 Olympian to find his spot landing a thumping right hook sending the former IBF Light Flyweight Champion into the ropes where he was blitzed with a dozen of blazing unanswered punches to the head and body dropping Pastrana to a knee where referee Lou Moret decided “Indio Boy” had had enough.

Pastrana now 35-15-2, 23Ko’s lost by DQ in his last outing June 26th while being outclassed by Mike Machine Gun” Oliver has now suffered eight losses in his last nine bouts, four inside the distance. Russell now having boxed twenty five rounds in eleven bouts climbing to 11-0, 8Ko’s needs a major step up next time out.

Montebello, California bantamweight Nestor Rocha stopped San Diego’s Benji Garcia with a double left hook to the head then body dropping and stopping the journeyman for a referee Jack Reiss ten count. Rocha rebounds from a devastating first round TKO loss to WBC Champion Hozumi Hasegawa, 28-3, 12Ko’s in Japan last July.

Rocha moves to 22-2, 8Ko’s while the light handed Garcia adds another one in the loss column at 14-16-3, 1Ko. Rocha up off the win looking for another title shot stated “I want to fight Jose Navarro next, then Abner Mares.

In a battle for Los Angeles bragging rights southpaw Jr. welterweight Oscar Andrade battled Ramon Valadez over four with with both fighters landing some clean shots. Valadez had his best moment in the third rocking Andrade with a hard right but couldn’t close as Andrade battled back. Andrade went back to his dominating left hand scoring at will in the final round grabbing a 39-37 times three unanimous decision to climb to 2-0, 1Ko while Valez drops his first one evening out at 1-1.

In lightweight action Long Beach California’s David Morales decked Georgia’s John Willoughby in the opening stanza with a big left hook setting the tone his 40-35 shutout unanimous decision and his first pro victory moving to 1-1 while Willoughby falls to 2-4, 1Ko.

San Diego light welterweight Angel Estrada outboxed Mission, Texas Raul Tovar for the first three but appeared to tire allowing Tovar to close the distance scoring some clean right hands but as they say too little too late with Estrad taking a 39-37 times three unanimous decision to advance to 5-0-1, 2Ko’s while Tovar slips to 7-4-1, 3Ko’s.

The card was filled out with two entertaining amateur bouts with East LA lightweight Xavier Montelongo out boxing and out pointing Stockton, California’s Jose Iguinega while in a battle of Jr. lightweights East LA’s Rogelio traded with Pasadena’s Gerardo Hernandez with Ramirez earning the nod.

Former super flyweight contender and 2000 Olympian Jose Navarro was supposed to headline but Golden Boy was unable to lock in an opponent.

Another Bang Up Fight Club

June 24th, Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California:  In another on Golden Boy Promotions action packed shows featuring up and coming local talent Las Vegas light welterweight Jessie Vargas kept his zero with a solid methodical dissection of Burbank, California southpaw Ernesto Zavala. Vargas decked Zavala in the opening round with a heavy two punch combination and then went on to finish the job finally breaking the rugged Zavala with a clean volley of unanswered shots convincing referee Jack Reiss to stop the bout at 0:33 of the sixth and final round. Vargas advances to 11-0, 6Ko’s while Zaval slides to 21-5, 9Ko’s

Former amateur standout,  2008 U.S. Olympianand now undefeated pro, Capitol Heights, Maryland’s southpaw featherweight Gary Russell Jr. displayed some of his finely tuned craft jumping Las Vegas, Nevada’s Rodrigo Aranda immediately on the opening bell establishing his jab setting up heavy straight lefts flooring Aranda in the opening frame. Russell then set his attention on Aranda’s body buckling him with two drilling body shots prompting referee Pat Russell to stop the bout at 0:34 of round two. Russell moves to 10-0, 7Ko’s while Aranda drops to 8-13-2, 2Ko’s.

East LA’s unbeaten light welterweight prospect Frankie Gomez took less than one round to catch up with Lakeside, California’s slippery Jaime Orrantia. Orrantia would make Gomez miss but his lack of offense allowed Gomez to finally zero in landing a solid right uppercut dropping Orrantia into the ropes causing referee Pat Russell to step in and call the action to the dismay of many at ringside. Gomez remains perfect at 4-0, 4Ko’s while Orrantia slips to 13-28-5, 4Ko’s.

LA’s light welterweight Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh coming by way of Dublin, Ireland denied Fairfield, California’s Luis Sanchez his first win with a convincing 40-36, 40-36, 39-37 unanimous decision. Kavanagh now 2-0, 1Ko keeps Sanchez winless at 0-2.

Junior middleweight Roberto Reyes remained perfect scoring his second straight first round stoppage when his bout with San Jose, California’s Clint Coronel was stopped due to cuts following round one. Reyes climbs to 2-0, 2Ko’s while Coronel dips to 3-1-1, 1Ko.

“Fight Night” Keeps it Coming

May 27th, Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: In another successful action filled night of fights at “Fight Club” Oxnard, California lightweight and Club Nokia regular David Rodela won a closely contested 77-75, 77-75, 78-74 split decision over Puerto Rico’s Eric Cruz. Rodela improved to 15-3-3, 6Ko’s with Cruz falling to 7-3-3, 7Ko’s.

Unbeaten East LA welterweight, Frankie Gomez remained perfect overwhelming Akeem Akinbode forcing referee Jerry Cantu to stop the one sided beating at 0:46 of the opening round. Gomez still perfect at 3-0, 3Ko’s left Akinbode on the other end of the spectrum at 0-3 Ko’ed three times. Gomez looked good but needs to step up in competition .

LA southpaw lightweight Jesus Rodriguez spoiled Pomona’s Jesus “El Negro” Juarez pro debut winning a 39-37, 40-36times two unanimous decision raising Rodriguez record to 2-0 and disappointing Juarez sending him home 0-1.

LA bantamweight and USA 2000 Olympian Jose Navarro returned to his winning ways shutting out San Diego’s light handed Benji Garcia 60-54 times three moving to 27-5-0, 12Ko’s while Garcia dips below .500 at 14-15-3, 1Ko.

LA light welterweight Ramon Valdez won his pro debut decisively beating Miami, Florida’s Javier Romero 40-36 times three leaving Romero winless at 0-3-1 while Valdez gets off to a good start at 1-0.

The five pro bouts were supported by three entertaining amateur bouts.

Bantamweight Abner Mares Flattens Almanza at Club Nokia
on Way to Perez IBF Title!

March 25th, Club Nokia, Los Angeles, California: Mexican bantamweight Abner Mares, 20-0, 13Ko’s stopped Felipe Almanza, 17-16-4, 8Ko’s with a crushing uppercut at 2:33 of the fifth round of their scheduled ten rounder keeping alive Mares shot at the IBF title held by Colombian Yonnhy Perez, 20-0, 14Ko’s on May 22.

In other action, unbeaten Golden Boy lightweight prospect Ronny Rios, 10-0, 5Ko’s mirrored the main event stopping Andres Ledesma, 15-17-1, 10Ko’s also in the fifth.

On the undercard: Ukraine light heavyweight Anatoliy Dudchenko made quick work of Menominee, Wisconsin’s Harley Kilfian disposing of him in the opening round of their scheduled six rounder.

In a meeting of first time pros welterweight David Aleman wasted no time stopping Atlanta’Georgia’s Gerald Fisher at 0:54 of round one. In a surprise Fort Myers, Florida’s super bantamweight Derrick Wilson battled to a 39-37, 38-38, 38-38 draw with Amarillo, Texas Adam Ochoa over four.

Ortiz in Ten at Club Nokia’s Fight Night!

In the main event Golden Boy welterweight “Viscious” Victor Ortiz, 26-2-1, 21Ko’s won his second straight since his disappointing loss to Marcos Rene Maidana last June stopping “The Mongoose” Hector Alatorre in the final round of their scheduled ten rounder.

Ortiz showed a new patience taking his time working and finding his spots then stepping up the pace in the second half of the bout culminating in a defining final round. In round ten Ortiz opened up like a King Cobra preying on a mongoose scoring cleanly with a solid left hand setting up two ripping uppercuts flooring Alatorre who motioned to referee David Mendoza he had enough ending it at 0:51of round ten.

Ortiz who is looking forward to a possible match against former world lightweight champion Nate Campbell claimed to have injured his right hand in the third round.

Paramount, California featherweight Charles Huerta out lasted Mission, Texas Guadalupe “Lupillo” De Leon inside attack finishing strong to win a 57-57 59-55 58-56 majority decision advancing to 13-1, 6Ko’s dropping De Leon to 8-10, 4Ko’s.
In a battle of southpaws Golden Boy hot prospect lightweight Luis Ramos used an educated jab to remain undefeated at 14-0, 7Ko’s shutting out Columbian Walter Estrada 40-36 times three dropping him to 35-12, 24Ko’s.

Philadelphia lightweight Karl Dargan kept his zero brutalizing Mexican Jose Alfredo Lugo, 10-13-1, 6Ko’s forcing referee David Mendoza to stop the action after four on advice from the ringside physician.

Oxnard, California super bantamweight Ricky Lopez battled with Palm Springs, California’s tough Hugo Ramos. Ramos had his moments inside but the sharper more technically sound Lopez landed the cleaner sharper shots winning a 39-37 times three unanimous decision advancing him to 7-0, 2Ko’s while dropping Ramos to 2-5-2, 1Ko.

Las Vegas, Nevada welterweight Jessie Vargas floored previously unbeaten Robert “The Nighthawk” Luna Jr. three times in the opening round of their scheduled six rounder twice with solid hooks and the third time with a heavy right prompting referee James Jen-Kin to call the bout at 1:56 of round one. Vargas remains undefeated at 9-0, 4Ko’s while dropping Luna to 5-1, 3Ko’s.

Rosemead, California lightweight Carlos Molina remained unbeaten climbing to 11-0, 6Ko’s winning a 40-35 times three unanimous decision battering Hensley “The Bruiser” Strachan over four dropping Strachan to 5-6-1, 1Ko.
