August 28th, Coliseo Mario 'Quijote' Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico: Puerto Rico’s WBO Jr. Flyweight Chanpion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon suffered his first defeat at the hands of Mexico’s WBA Jr. Flyweight World Champion Giovani “The Aztec Warrior” Segura.
In front of his hometown fans Calderon started well moving behind a good jab taking full advantage of the 24 x 24 ft ring. The slick boxer landed some clean shots while Segura kept the Puerto Rican star under constant pressure fighter taking full advantage of his seven year age.
“The Aztec Warrior” methodically pressed the elder statesman attacking his body attacking throwing a large volume of punches. Calderon controlled the action and the space until deciding to trade with Segura in round four.
Segura making his move in the fifth as the angles, space and ring got smaller as the bigger Segura began to close the distance landing heavy shots banging Calderon on the ropes with the skilled boxers legs beginning to show the first signs of wear when “Iron Boy” slipped to the canvas.
Calderon a southpaw showed his champions heart coming back in rounds six and seven scoring with crisp straight lefts and right hooks. Despite his success in rounds six and seven Calderon was no longer looking like the cool calm slick boxer as he was openly appearing to show the effects of Segura’s pressure. Pressure an over size ring couldn’t beat.
In the eighth round Segura turned it up another notch staying in the “Iron Boys” face backing a fading him to the corner cracking his amour and breaking him down with a volley of vicious punches top and bottom putting the undefeated champion on a knee where he remained for a full count from referee Jose Hiram Rivera at 1:34 of round eight.
Segura’s pressure attack and iron clad persistence earned “The Aztec Warrior” the WBO light flyweight and WBA Super World light flyweight titles along with “The RING Magazine” 108 pound title. Segura advances to 25-1-1, 21Ko’s while the thirty five year old Calderon his first loss dropping him to 34-1-1, 6Ko’s.
