The “Atomic Bull” Implodes, Son Falls as Fill In!

As reported by the Miami Herald, former heavyweight champion Oliver McCall who owns one of only two loses suffered by Lennox Lewis seems to have returned to the old ways. The same old ways and bad habits that kept him from making a real mark in the heavyweight division.

McCall known as the “The Atomic Bull” seems to have self destructed like the atomic bomb right to the chin he landed on Lennox Lewis flooring the champion in the 2nd round back in 94 like he in the 1997 rematch with Lewis that saw the then champion brake down crying refusing to fight back. The former champion had put together three straight wins in 2009 earning a fight with Zuri Lawrence Tuesday night at the Hard Rock Live Arena a fight that the former WBC Heavyweight Champion could not appear for.

Reports are that the bout was cancelled as McCall was arrested for possession of cocaine.

McCall has had ongoing problems with drugs during his career was also also charged with a violation of probation. This arrest, regardless of conviction time wise will prove to be the final curtain for the “The Atomic Bull.” McCall who holds wins over Tony Tucker, Oleg Maskaev, Henry Akinwande, Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis who carries a respectable record of 59-7, 37 Ko’s seeming to always take a step back when stepping up.

McCall’s son Elijah, now 4-1-1, 4Ko's replaced his 44 year old father as the main event only to fall to the hands of Haitian heavyweight Dieuly Aristilde, 7-1,1Ko in the fourth round after flooring Aristilde twice in the opening round of their scheduled six rounder.

Since then the Polish heavyweight has won nine straight six inside the distance with the last two coming as a heavyweight winning the IBF vacant Heavyweight Title stopping Andrew Golota in five. for a Possible Fight at Yankee Stadium!

(February 17th) Rumors out of WBA light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman’s camp is that he will be trained by legendary trainer and HBO commentator Emanuel Steward who has worked the corner for such greats as Tommy “Hit Man” Hearns, Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez, “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, Prince Naseem Hamed, heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko.

Also in the wind is word of Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing Cotto’s promoter looking to move the fight to Yankee Stadfium. If the stadium deal could be worked out along with a bar mitzvah scheduling problem with Foreman studying to become a rabbi the fight would be moved to June 5th at the stadium.

Jason Cintron Aims to Make a Statement on 2/27

(Kermit and Jason Cintron, photo by Jeff Julian)

Reading, PA - Jason Cintron may have a familiar last name but boxing fans are still getting to know the Reading, PA junior welterweight. The 28-year-old Cintron aims to take another step towards asserting himself as a world class prospect when he faces Maurice Chalmer on February 27 at the Rodeway Inn & Conference Center in Allentown, PA.

The eight-round bout will be the co-featured attraction of a ten-fight professional/amateur boxing event promoted by King's Promotions. Travis Kauffman of Reading, PA will face Bernard Brown in the main event.

Most fans know Cintron's older brother, former welterweight champion and current junior middleweight contender Kermit Cintron. While boxing runs in his blood, it wasn't Jason's first love.

Cintron picked up the sweet science to stay in shape while playing football at Thadeus Stevens College of Technology in 2000. After graduating with a degree in masonry, Cintron continued to hone his craft as an amateur. He turned pro after 24 bouts and won his first ten fights before losing to unbeaten Hank Lundy of Philadelphia. He says he learned more in his sole defeat than in all of his previous combined wins.

"I learned from my mistakes," Cintron, 11-1 (3 knockouts), says. "I was overconfident and made unnecessary mistakes. It was a good experience and now I'm back."

Cintron rebounded with a dominant points win over durable veteran Martinus Clay this past December and will face another experienced veteran in Chalmers. The 33-year-old Chalmers has faced mostly unbeaten opposition in his 17-fight career, including world champion Andre Berto and contenders James Kirkland and Miguel Espino. Cintron will try to measure himself up against that level of competition with an impressive win.

"I just love competition. I want to compete against the best fighters in the world because I feel I have that capability."

Far from being overshadowed by his more famous older brother, Jason feels inspired by his brother's success and hopes to one day reach that same plateau.

"I look up to my brother. I always see how he got up there and I know I can get up there with him. Hopefully someday we can both call ourselves world champions."

Bragging rights will be at stake in the amateur portion of the night when fighters from the Allentown Boxing Club challenge their counterparts from Reading’s King’s Gym.

Tickets are priced at $25.00, 50.00 and 65.00 and are now available at the Rodeway Inn (610-395-3731), www.Kingsboxing.com and the Allentown Boxing Club (Luis Melendez: 484-860-5162). A special student discount of $5.00 off any ticket price will be available at the door only along with student ID. A portion of ticket sales will be donated by King's Promotions to the Allentown Boxing Club. Doors open at 6:00 pm; first bout starts at 6:30.

Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero Seek’s Prayers
from the Boxing Community!

3-time world champion and current IBF Jr. Lightweight titlist, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (25-1-1, 17 KO's) is seeking prayer from the boxing community for his wife Casey, who is battling Leukemia. A bone marrow transplant procedure was required to keep her chances of living ongoing and every day is a battle for her life.

"Right now I'm going through a difficult time dealing with my wife Casey's illness with Leukemia." stated Guerrero, "Fortunately we found a bone marrow match, but there are some complications that are making things difficult. I'm asking everyone in the boxing community along with family, friends and the general public to keep Casey in their prayers. I will continue to keep my faith in Jesus Christ and pray for understanding."

"The Ghost" was looking forward to a potential fight with Michael Katsidis on March 27th, but due to his wife's condition, he will remain by her side. Guerrero went on to say, "I want to thank my promoter Golden Boy Promotions for their understanding in this situation. I was ready to do battle with Katsidis but mentally my mind wouldn't be at 100%, and to fight a warrior like him you have to be at your best psychologically."

                  Guerrero's Wife Battling Leukemia
By Dan Rafael ESPN.com
Junior lightweight titleholder Robert Guerrero, scheduled to face interim lightweight titlist Michael Katsidis on March 27, withdrew from the fight on Monday because his wife is seriously ill.

"It's a very tough situation," co-manager Shelly Finkel told ESPN.com. "He can't fight like that. That's what we all told him and he finally agreed. It's too much."

Guerrero's wife, Casey, was diagnosed with leukemia two weeks before then-featherweight titleholder Guerrero was scheduled to defend his belt against Martin Honorio in November 2007.

Guerrero left his wife's bedside just a couple of days before the fight, knocked Honorio out in the first round, and returned to his wife and their two children.

Casey Guerrero's leukemia eventually went into remission but is back. She underwent a bone marrow transplant recently and has been at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., for about 10 days, Guerrero's co-manager Bob Santos said.

"They won't really know if the bone marrow is going to take, so we're hoping that it does," Santos said. "Robert wanted to fight. He thought he could spend half the day with her and train the other half the day, but she started to take a turn for the worse. I told him point blank there is no way I would allow him to fight. Me and Shelly had to talk him out of it. This is a tough sport and if he's going to fight somebody like Katsidis you have to be 100 percent focused. With this situation, how could he be?"

Santos said this was different than when Guerrero fought Honorio just after Casey's diagnosis.

"She had just been diagnosed and there was a lot of hope and optimism," he said. "The doctors were like, 'We can try this and we can do that.' In this case, it's hit or miss. We just don't know if the [bone marrow transplant] is going to work. If this doesn't work there is nothing they can do for you. She's at a point where if this doesn't work, unless there is divine intervention, she's in big trouble."

Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Guerrero, agreed with the decision to call off the fight.

"I got the call and they said it's very serious," Schaefer said. "All of our prayers are with Robert and his wife and we hope that she can pull through. I feel so bad. They have two young kids. I hope that she will be able to make it. His wife is fighting for her life. That is way more important than any fight in a ring."

Guerrero (25-1-1, 17 KOs), 26, vacated his featherweight belt in 2008 and moved up to junior lightweight last year. He easily outpointed South Africa's Malcolm Klassen in August to claim a world title.

Golden Boy hoped to put Katsidis-Guerrero on in the San Jose, Calif., area because Guerrero, who is from nearby Gilroy, Calif., is a popular draw.

Schaefer said a new opponent is being sought to face Katsidis (26-2, 21 KOs), although the card will be moved out of Northern California. Schaefer said the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit has shown interest in hosting the event.

The undercard bout pitting interim junior welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana  (27-1, 26 KOs) of Argentina against Victor Cayo (24-0, 16 KOs) of the Dominican Republic remains intact.
