Hard New Evidence to Re-open
Billy Collins Jr. vs Luis Resto Fight Scandal!

   April 4th, Jack Dempsey’s restaurant: Former welterweight Luis Resto who earlier admitted to using doctored gloves where two inches of horse hair was removed in his beating of up and coming welterweight Billy Collins Jr. on the undercard of Roberto Duran \ Davey Moore fight in New York’s Madison Square Garden on June 16, 1983.

Collins suffered blurred vision and depression dying in a car accident nine months after his the scandalous Resto fight. Resto added some new terrifying and damning evidence acknowledging that the tape used to wrap his hands for that fight and three others had been soaked in plaster of paris, literally giving him hands of stone.

Resto’s gloves were confiscated by NYPD but his wraps were never taken in to evidence. Resto acknowledged a family member may still have the wraps with his memorabilia. Resto’s gloves were found to tampered with when Billy Collins Sr. shook Resto’s hand after the fight.

Resto’s revelation during his affiliation with Eric Drath producing the documentary “Cornered” built around the facts of the fight has began a legal motion to re-open the civil suit against the State of New York over its failure to protect Billy Collins Jr. and prevent the beating. "Cornered," is a documentary by Eric Drath about the fight and its cataclysmic consequences. The story deals with the drama of boxing, the deviant actions taken by a fighter and a trainer resulting in the ultimate demise of a human being. Drath a former boxing manager and producer for CNN and Fox News met Resto while working out at a boxing gym and bought the rights to Resto’s story. Resto also said that plaster of paris was used in three other fights all which he was trained by Panama Lewis. Luis Resto was present at the press conference and stated he couldn’t live with the facts and coming clean has lifted him.

Andrea Collins-Niles, Billy Collin’s Jr’s. widow was asked by open telephone if she had anything to say to Resto. She replied "ultimately I'm not Resto's judge." Resto and his trainer, Panama Lewis, were found guilty of assault and conspiracy and served time in jail for their tampering with the gloves. Both were banned from boxing.

   After being released from jail resto was denied his license several times by New York State boxing Commissioner Randy Gordon not in office at the time of the incident. There is another pending lawsuit against New york State boxing regarding the Arturo Gatti \ Joey Gamache fight in 2000 which Gatti stopped Gamache allegedly sustained permanent brain damage in the loss. Gamache, and filed lawsuits against both Gatti and the New York State Athletic Commission claiming that Gatti weighed significantly more than the contracted weight at the time of the fight. The movie Cornered is scheduled to appear in the HBO Latino Film Festival this summer.

Talking to Luis he seemed sincerely haunted. He stated he presently helps out at a boxing gym in the Bronx and visits young men looking for guidance through boxing.
