Will Rosinsky Shuns Pro Opportunity!

BY BILL FARRELL DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Wednesday, December 26th 2007, 4:00 AM Having already won a national title and three Daily News Golden Gloves championships, Will Rosinsky had more than a few promoters eager to help him move up to the pros. But Rosinsky turned his back on prizefighting to pursue a career as a physical education teacher. "I love the sport, I want to stay in the sport. But I really love the idea of teaching. I have a passion for it," said Rosinsky, who has one semester left at Queens College as he becomes a student-teacher. "It's what I want to do." Rosinsky, who will turn 23 on Friday, burst onto the amateur boxing scene in 2003, when he reached the Golden Gloves semifinals as a 165-pound novice. "I had worked at karate when I was younger and a friend suggested I try boxing," he said. "What I liked about boxing is it is such an individual sport. Everything you do is on you." It wasn't long before Rosinsky moved his training from a small gym in Ozone Park to Jimmy O'Pharrow's Starrett City gym just few miles west of the Belt Parkway. "I really got into it once I got to Starrett," Rosinsky said. "I was round-robin sparring with guys like (Golden Gloves champions) Jaidon (Codrington), Curtis (Stevens), Joe Greene Jr. and Danny (Jacobs). You never got a break. It was get better or get out." Rosinsky got better. Within two years, he was the Daily News Golden Gloves and U.S. National 178-pound champion. He also represented the U.S. at the World Cup in Russia and the World Championships in China. "When you start you think, 'Man, it's a dream just to fight here in the Golden Gloves,' but then to be given the opportunity to represent the U.S., man, that's living way beyond the dream," Rosinsky said. Now his dream is to teach. "A lot of people ask me if I'm sure I'm making the right decision by not turning pro," he said. "They say things like, 'If I were you I'd at least give it a try.'" Even his mom wanted to see him take a shot. "Even more so than my dad," said Rosinsky. "I don't think she understands the full impact of what it means to fight professionally, getting hit in the head with those smaller gloves. I just don't want that. "I think about it sometimes, but I've made my decision and I'm going to stick to it. Boxing is a young man's sport, so it's not like I change my mind down the road. I can't say how I'm going to feel about it 15 years from now. "I'm going be a teacher and I'm sure I'm going to be successful. I just hope I can look back and say, 'Yeah, it would have been cool,' but it's not going to be a what-if thing." Just because Rosinsky is not turning pro doesn't mean he's turning his back on boxing. And that's good news for followers of the Daily News Golden Gloves. Rosinsky will be coming back to defend the 178-pound open championship in attempting to join the elite group of four-time Golden Gloves champions.
