Not Exactly “Redemption” as Salita Decisions Gonzalez in Eight, Ruiz Takes the Steam Out of Beeman!

September 1st Oceana Hall, Brooklyn, New York: In the main event of O'Shea Brothers Boxing fight card promoted as “Redemption” Brooklyn welterweight Dmitriy “Star of David” Salita returned to the ring after suffering the only loss of his thirty two fight pro career.

Salita, 30-1-1, 16Ko’s suffered a first round TKO loss to Amir Khan last December and would be searching for “Redemption” taking on the Dominican Republic’s southpaw Franklin Gonzalez. Picking Gonzalez, 13-5, 9Ko’s would prove to be a strange choice for a comeback bout. Salita looking for a big win and “Redemption” after his loss to Khan got all he could handle with the rough and ready southpaw looking for an upset.

Gonzalez awkwardness and southpaw stance proved the veteran to be a worthy opponent. Gonzalez played the part of aggressor as the two traded rights for lefts for most of the scheduled eight rounder. Salita would out work Gonzalez whose aggression most times fell ineffective mixing it up opening up and scoring well to Gonzalez body.

Despite the loud support from a packed partisan crowd Salita usually a masterful tactician appeared at times to be playing it too safe. Several times the usually slick Salita opened up ripping shots to Gonzalez body with both hands then uncharacteristically would step straight back instead of stepping around or turning Gonzalez to continuing the attack or safely move out of range allowed the aggressive southpaw to start a collection of lefts below the Brooklynites left eye.

After being a little too selective with his shots whether prompted by the cheering audience or Salita feeling the bout was close “The Star of David” finally attempted to open it up offensively in the final round but Gonzalez would grab on never allowing Salita to put his combinations together.

Gonzalez aggression and occasional lefts would not be enough for the upset with Salita landing the cleaner shots at a higher volume earning a 78-74 times three unanimous decision as Gonzalez dips to 13-6, 9Ko’s.

It was announced to a loud approving crowd after the bout with Brooklyn’s Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi in the ring that Salita now 31-1-1, 16Ko’s and “The Magic Man” may get together early next year. Both fighters have a loss to Amir Khan.

In the co-feature Merrick, Long Island jr middleweight Mike “Changri” Ruiz fighting for the second time in three weeks looked as sharp as ever taking on Providence Rhode Island’s Josh “Steamin Beeman.

In round one Ruiz took advantage of the slow starting Beeman working behind a stiff jab. Ruiz took the “steam” out of Beeman in round two dropping him with a heavy hook downstairs.

Beeman would have his moments but never could gain momentum as Ruiz used a mixture of movement and a solid body attack through the middle rounds closing out rounds five and six with speed and solid combination punching to grab a 58-55, 59-56 times two unanimous decision. Ruiz climbs to 10-4, 5Ko’s as Beeman droped his fifth straight sliding to 4-7-3, 2Ko’s.

Queens, New York junior lightweight Rafael Vasquez was to thick and too strong for Allentown, Pennsylvania’s Benjamin Morales. Vasquez imposed his will, size and power early dropping Morales in the opening round and never looking back. Morales demonstrated some good skills and excellent speed but Vasquez would score with the cleaner heavier shots winning a 39-37 times three unanimous decision.

Queens jr. welterweight Johnathan “Lil Big Man” Cuba was a “lil too big, a lil too strong and a lilt to fast” for Patterson, New Jersey’s game but light punching Hector Rivera. Cuba moved in and out scoring power shots from all angles shutting out Rivera 40-36 times three in their scheduled four rounder. Cuba advances to 3-2, 2Ko’s while Rivera falls to 2-6, 1Ko.

In jr. middleweight action Brooklyn’s Frank Galarza exploded onto the pro scene stopping Riedsville, North Carolina’s Nick Morris in his tracks with a crushing overhand right just twenty seconds into round one. Morris is still looking for his first win at 0-2, having been Ko’ed twice.

In a battle of light punching welterweights Atlantic City, New Jersey’s DeCarlo Perez demonstrated excellent skills but no punch battling the equally light handed Mexican Fileberto Nieto. Perez and Nieto traded pats until 57 seconds into round four when Perez began to pile up shots somehow opening up a cut over Nieto’s left eye causing referee Sparkle Lee to stop the bout on the advice of the ringside physician. Perez gets his first win at 1-0-1 while Nieto loses his fifth straight at 1-7, 1Ko.

Newark, New Jersey middleweight Thomas Baldwin traded lead rights for left hooks with Bronx, New York’s Felix Rangel battling to a 39-37 (Baldwin), 38-38 times two majority draw leaving Baldwin unbeaten at 1-0-1, while Rangel still searching for his first pro victory drops to 0-4-2.

In the nights opener the action started fast with Connecticut’s welterweight Rajiv Bhattacharya blasting out Baltimore, Maryland’s Tyrone Gamble in the opening seconds of round one before most fans had found their seats. Bhattacharya remains perfect at 3-0, 3Ko’s while Gamble now 0-2 should consider another career having been stopped in the first round of both losses.

The card was fast paced andactioned packed. The crowd was alive and there were many fan favorites in attendance with Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi, light heavyweight star Will Rosinsky, NYS Heavyweight Champion Darrel Madison, Harold Lederman and Philly’s hot welterweight prospect Angel Ocasio to name a few.
