Sardelis Golden in Gloves

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Jason Sardelis' furious pace fed off the roars of the crowd at the Van Dyke Community Center in Brooklyn during last night's Golden Gloves action. Representing the Vets Memorial BC, the 125-pound novice showed equal parts boxer and brawler against Starrett City's Daniel Dong. "I try to adjust my style to take the other guy out of his rhythm," said Sardelis after earning his victory. The Long Island teen's swift left hooks and jarring uppercuts also earned him P.C. Richard & Son Boxer of the Night honors. Angel Garcia sidestepped the best efforts of Vidal Hernandez to land his new-found uppercut. "I didn't have that punch last year in the Golden Gloves, and it's probably my biggest advantage now," said the Ardon Sweet Science fighter after his win. Garcia's power led to an early end to the 125-pound novice fight, at 1:52 of the third round. Joseph Valentin, of the Webster PAL, said he felt focused in his 125-pound novice bout and executed a calm strategy to combat the hurried attacks of Alonzo Haigood of Mendez Boxing. Rene Alarcon and Raul Calderon fought a back-and-forth battle in their 141-pound novice bout. But Alarcon piled on the pressure in the final stanza to walk away with the decision. "I was more nervous waiting for the decision than for the start of the fight," said the 25-year-old construction worker. Neuky Santelises' eyes were wide open as he cocked back the winning right hand that stopped Romero Williams of the Suffolk PAL at 1:56 of the second round in their 132-pound novice bout. But the Hostos College student was at a loss for words after his victory. "I don't remember the punch," said Santelises, who trains out of Gleason's Gym. Jacques Dartiguenave earned a victory after Terrence Simms was disqualified in the third round of their 141-pound novice class bout for holding. Dominique James outpointed Andres Cerpa for the win in their 125-pound novice bout. The Golden Gloves continues tomorrow at St. Raymond's High School in the Bronx. First bout 8 p.m.
