Straight Right
Perfecting the Straight Right
Again a solid stanceand proper hand positionare mandatory in the correct execution throwing the straight right hand.
Technique:
In a proper stance throwing the right hand begins at the right foot. You should always be on the ball of the foot of the hand you are punching with and your other foot becomes your foundation. The first thing that happens is you switch from the ball of your left foot to the ball of your right foot (micro second). Then you spin your right heel out driving your right knee forward and slightly down. This will bring your weight from the ground to and up through your knee to your hips.

Simultaneously you rotate your hips driving your rear hip forward now pushing your weight and power through your core to your shoulders. Micro seconds behind your hips you rotate your shoulders in the same fashion as your hips throwing the right hand from your chin extending the arm just in front of your shoulder one third the way out pronating it (turn thumb down your punch the same as the jab). Your chin should follow your feet and go to the shoulder of the hand you are punching with. Now at full extension if you threw a nice straight right hand if you drop it down it should hit your right knee. Keeping all your power in a nice thin straight power line A---B. When throwing the straight right think of it as a as shoulder punch transferring your weight from the right side over your left knee which should be bent slightly. The punch is not complete until your right hand is back at home where it started and you left shoulder is back in line with your left knee closing you defensively while putting you in the best position for you next punch usually the left hook or left uppercut.
The procedure is just the opposite side for a southpaw (straight left).
There is also the overhand (looping) right hand this punch is thrown with the same body motion the only adjustment is that the arm is thrown with the elbow bent as where the straight right the elbow is down.
Great right hands. Rocky Marciano, Alexis Arguello, Max Schmelling.
